The Dalles, January io, 1899. WAYSIDE GLEANINGS. "East Lynife Tonight at the Vogt. Smith Bros, call attention to their toiree tomorrow night at the Baldwin. The "wearing of the green" was very prominent in our city today. Thia was the only manner in which the 17th of Ireland was observed here. It ia gratifying to Bgain eee James Blakeney on onr Btreeta after his lone eiege at the hospital in Portland. He is, however, still walking with crutches and will be compelled to spend abont a month more in Portland before lie will be from under the doctor's care. He will return Monday. G. Li. Hutchin, formerly a resident of Bloomington, 111., but now of Portland, is in The Dalles today. It ia Mr. Hutchin'a intention to, in the near future, start a daily paper in Portland, having Democratic proclivities. Should the project be carried into effect, we wish for it a much longer life than ita predeceBaora. There should be ample room in Portland for two large dailies. The most enjoyable dance ever given by the Rath bone Sisters was that which took place at the K. of P. hall last night. About fifty couples were on the floor, and to make dancing comfortable the email hall had to be opened, anl the Waists Heart Leap for Joy. & MAYS, in Plain Figures. piano moved to a position b etween the folding doors. Birgfeld'a music was so inspiring that none could keep from making the moat of it and joining in the good time. Ed Smith, holding the lucky number which drew the prize at the theater last night, took up bis bed-room set and walked. It was a fine one, too. To morrow night a parlor set will be given away, and the numbers which have been given each night will be good for the drawing on that occasion. The Smith boys are particularly lucky of late, James having won the mandolin raffled Monday night by J. Rees. Tomorrow afternoon Noble'eiDramatic Company will give a matinee, begin ning at 2 o'clock, when-5 "Kathleen Mavourneen" will be given. Thia is a very pleasing play, n4 it , will, be a splendid .opportunity ibr the ladies and children to hear tire -Noble company. This company baa' greatly pleased our citizens by theirladylike and gentle manly conduct daring their stay in our city, proving themselves refined both in their demeanor on and off the stage. - Although the audience which at tended, the Vogt last night to hear Noble's company in "Train Wreckers" was not large, it was a veJy appreciative one, and the play was well given. They have been requested to appear in "East Lynne" tonignt, and, aa the play bas for years been a popular one, no doubt they will have the best houee of the week's engagement. The Baker City Republican speaks very highly of their production of this famous play, -giving each actor a share of unstinted praise. Now ia the time to induce your friends to come West and view a country worth living in. The Union Pacific has fallen in line with other routee and baa cut ratea to California points, and local officiate expect to receive notification every day that reduced ratea will be made to apply to Portland. The Southern Pacific will be forced to fall in line next or else lose considerable busi ness. The Northern Pacific haa gone the other roada one better and made cheap ratea apply ' to all intermediate points in ita territory. In fact, the fight is warming up, and some more lashing of east-bound rates ia expected. Keeping the sidewalks and streets of acityin repair is one of those endless taaka which keeps multiplying aa the work advances. A small stretch of walk to which our attention has been called aa being one which demands im mediate attention, ia that on Eighth street, between Court and Union. The course of true love would certainly never run smooth if that walk bad to be passed over between the courting and the union. It has been sadly in need of repairs for eoui time, and the .need should at once be met. Another instance of the petty little robberies being carried on by tramps in our city at preeent wae shown early this morning when a man, who was arrested for drunkenness and vagrancy, was found to be in possession of a pair of Indian clubs, which he bad been trying to dispose of. These email thefta are only forerunners of more serious rob beries which will be committed in the city unless these fellows are compelled to leave. They should not be encouraged by having their requests lor hand-outs granted by our citizens. A few of the gentlemen friends of the Ladies' Aid Society will make their debut in the entertainment line next Wedneeday evening at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Wilson, when the ladies will take a back seat, where they will be enabled to take a few pointers in the art of entertaining. The drawing card of the evening will be the selections by the new male quartet club, just organized. W. H. Wilson made a trip to Portland yesterday to procure the latest quartet music, both in classic rnueic and the most catchy coon songs. A two-story brick addition ,120x97 feet in dimension; will not only be a won derful improvement to the Umatilla House, but aad much to the appearance of a block which every visitor to or trav eler through the city ia bound to see. Having bought the property adjoining the hotel, Sinnot & Fish now have work men tearing down the old shacks which have etood there for years, and will in the near future, if not at once, build such an addition to their hotel, the lower floor to be used aa a dining room and the upper partitioned into . rooms. -We are much pleased to bear of thia project, and hope nothing will prevent its con summation. Many will remember well one of Mc Ewen'a leading hypnotic subjects named DuBois, who visited the city with the great hypnotist on his first visit; a very effeminate looking fellow, who started out independently from this place aa a full-fledged hypnotist, and who when last beard from was humbugging audiences in every part of the country. It appeara that he haa about reached the end of iiis string from the following notice regarding him: "A hypnotist named DuBois, and hia company ar rived at Cle Elum the other night from Roslyn, closely followed by a wagon load of indignant young boya who claimed that they bad been engaged by the hypnotist to go into trances and do what ever he aeked oa the etage at Roslyn, and that be had not paid them as he agreed. After a stormy scene in the office of the Reed house, a compromise was effected, and the boya departed for home. They say that he has no hypnotic power whatever." The Consequence of a Comna. The importance of so small a matter as a comma becomes evident by the perusal of the following: In his court King Charles was standing on his head, a golden crown; And hia royal brow was wrinkled In a most por- Fifty courtiers entered walking on their hands, "tic unKUt, Set in rings of gold and silver: what a rare and splendid sight. Who He Was. and What Bis Mission A Paper oy Mrs. L,. Brooks. The following paper ivas composed by Mre. Brooke and red at the St. Pat rick'a party given ay the Ladies' Aid Society , at the res'tence of Mrs. J. C. Hostetler, last Wednesday afternoon : The 17th of March has by common consent been consecrated to the memory of him who is ealjed the Apostle of Ireland. History is very indefinite as to its account of him, France, Scotland and Wales being given as the place of hia birth. In his confession he himself says he waa born at Bonavem, Tabernia. The . last name, meaning camps, was given by the Romans to the district south of the Clyde, and also to one near the river Usk in Wales. Either of the two :s better authenticated than that of Boulogne, France. In some of the incursions of the Picts or Scots, common at the time, aa the Roman power waa declining to hold these people in abeyance, when about sixteen years of age he was taken captive and sold to a petty chief of Ireland, where he remained for about six years, then making his eecape back to his home in Britain. During his stay in the island he seems to have "become interested in its people so aa to 'decide to devote hia life to their service, though aa he save himself, it waa In opposition to the wishes of bis lriends; but be claimed to have heard their call, "Come over and help us." Hia Hume ia eaid to have been Sociat, Patrick being from the Roman indicat ing patrician. Hia father's name was Cal purniusr and evidently a Roman officer of some authority, also a convert to the Christian iaith as he is called a deacon. While history, when separated from the mythical and supernatural, gives ns so little of detail, the fact that hia name baa come down through the ages from about the fifth century, kept evergreen in the memory of the warm-hearted people whom he went to serve, proves him to have been a man of more than ordinary ability. Dealing cautiouely and gently with old pagan superstitions, even preserving some of the Druidical altars and transforming many of their ritea. and customs to the Christian faith he waa endeavoring to inculcate. Hie "Confession" reveals him a devout, simple-minded, unlettered man, and a discreet, energetic missionary. Such men belong to no especial age, race, or clime, but are the heritage of the world, and we, on the shores of the Pacific, can unite with the people of the Emerald Isle, washed by the Atlantic's surges, in commemorating the memory of St. Patrick, whether the 17th of Marcn be the day of hia birth or bia death. The life spent in service is what we would honor. i "Wondrous and awfal are thy silent halls Oh kingdom of the past! . Whatever there was ol true life In thee, Leaps in our aires veins.
