DEWEY.
Admiral Dewey has emphatically
declined to beome a candidate for
the presidency, and the sincerity of
bis refusal will not be questioned.
It is worth remembering, though,
thai other Americans who had dis
tinguished themselves at arms made
as pointed refusals to enter the field
of politics, and just the same after
ward became president of the United
States, says the Spokesman-Review.
For example, Washington. In his
address to congress, taking leave of
his military command, he said :
"Having now finished the great work
assigned me, 1 retire from the theater
of action, and bidding an affectionate
farewell to this august body, under
whose orders I have long acted, I
here offer my commission and take
my leave of all the employments of
public life." Later, in a .letter to
John Jay, "Washington emphasized
his desire to avoid the cares of
public life. "Having happily as
sisted in bringing the ship into port,"
wrote he, "and haviDg been fairly
discharged, it is not my business to
embark again on the sea of troubles."
Yet Washington lived to round out
two terms in the White House.
Jackson was more vehement in his
Tefusal to become a candidate for
president. His secretary quotes him
as saying: "Do they suppose that
I am such a d d fool as to think
myself fit for president of the United
States? No, sir. I know what I am
fit for. I ean command a body of
men in a rough way, but I am not
fit to be president." Jsckson, too,
rounded out two terms as president.
Thna it. ia soon thot nr- -f
greatest presidents were unconscious
of the true measure of their great
ness. Dewey has the Washingtonian
and Jacksonian attiibute of modest
worth, and it may be that history
will repeat itself in his case. In his
quick rise to world-wide fame, a fine
lesson may be traced for the guidance
of American citizenship. ;JIe bad
the capacity to perform well his life
duty in a patient, plodding manner.
He had all but approached the age
of enforced retirement before fortune
threw him the laurel wreath, and
then his honors came in a fortuitous
way. .: First came the .great chance
of war, and by good fortune Dewey
was on the Asiatic station. Here
was the supreme contact' of the op
portunity and the man.
It is glorious that the navy has its
Dewey of tried worth and greatness,
but 'tis a greater glory that action
bas shown the presence of a host of
men endowed with the qualities
which Dewey has disclosed. Dewey
is a fair type of the American naval
officer faithful, industrious, patient,
modest and brave; Willing to wait
and work a lifetime for one hour of
opportunity.

A startling incident, of which Mr.
John Oliver of Philadelphia, was the
subject, is narrated by him as follows :
"I was in a mott dreadful condition. My
ekin was almost yellow, eyes sunken,
tongue coated, pain continually in back
mod sides, no appetite-gradually grow
ing weaker day by. day. Three physi
cians had Riven me up. Fortunately, a
Iriend advised. 'Electric Bitters' ; and- to
my great joy and surprise, the first
bottle made a decided improvement. -I
continued iheir use for three weeks,, and
am now a well man. I know they eaved
my life, -and robbed the grave of another
Victim." No one should fail to try them.:
