These be . the mornings when ' the "little fishes in the brook" must be wary if they evade the various 4ait which is dropped for them, and wary they certainly are if the experience of a number of nimrods this morning is any criterion to judge by. Five o'clock saw about a dozen fishermen lined up along the banks of Mill creek this morn ing, armed with rod and line, angling for a trout for breakfast. Seven o'clock beheld just as many nimrods retracing tbeir footsteps loaded down with two small fishes about five inches long. The leader was bumming a baas solo, some The Wardner News says: ''The Nobles Dramatic company opened v in Pythian hall last Monday -night with The Strategists" and will close tonight with "Lucky - Ranch." " No company ever visited' Wardner with more satisfac tory ..results to its patrons than; the Nobles.'" They have a ljtrge repertoire of comedies and drama such- as suit the popnlar taste and upon every presenta tion they produce specialties between acts which .never fail . to please. The Nobles kave a fine solo band which is a drawing card in itself.""- The company has made an excellent impression in Wardner, where they have had-a good house every night and the News takes pleasure in recommending them to the public wherever they may gd" Some weeks ago Mrs. Ed Waud, whose home.' was directly across Mill cieek bridge, died, leaving to the mercies of a husband scarcely worthy of the name, a young babe and four children besides. Greasympatfay was felt by neighbors for the little ones, and since the mother was taken away efforts have been '"made to in someway provide homes for them. Finally the case was submitted to the county judge with a request that three of them Grace, aged 6; Katie, aged 3, and Emma, 4 weeks old, be sent to the Boys and Girls Aid Society of Portland, the complaint alleging that the father was unkind to them and took no care of them whatever. ' Monday,, the 13th, is the day appointed for the hearing of the case and the decision as to whether they will be sent to the society. It is to be hoped that something will be done for the children. Occasionally Dalles people haveadittle variation in the regular program, and awaken some morning to find that a stpre, shop, or some place of business has been opened And a few hundred dollars ' taken, perhaps less. Such oc currences occasion' a slight excitement for a time and the . matter is forgotten. This should not be the case,, but every possible means should be b Bed to bring the culprit to justice, and, as in Tacoma, some special efforts be made. This morning when Mr. GunniDg came down to hia blacksmith ehop he found that he was worth $40 less than when he left it last night, some individual having un locked ibe large door on the east side and walked away with eleven Green river screw plates, taps, dies and stock, and a bolt clipper, which were worth all of $40. The case containing the screw plates was left, and many tools which were valuable. No possible clue as to the robber can be found; but every effort is being made to apprehend .him. Mr. Gunning eaye,he cannot replace the screw plates here and perhaps not in Portland. ' . "Whatsoever thy hand findefh to do, do it with all thy might" has. been the motto of Mr. S. B. Adams, whose third term - of office as school director ends with the election Monday. Mr. Adams, we understand, has fully decided not to again accept the office, and certainly Dalles people could not expect more of him than has already been given. Dur ing the nine years in which he has served the district as director, his whole purpoee and aim seemed to be the good of the school and everything ia connec tion', therewith, devoting most of bis time to his duties in that line. Had he been erecting a residence of his own he could not have been more enthusiastic over every detail.than, was he regarding the erection- of the new High school buildiDg, and his only regret now is that, bis term is up before he has seen the work of beautifying the grounds fully completed, and still expresses himself as determined to- take as much interest as though be were a director. District No, 12 should feel very grateful to Mr, Adams for his efforts in its behalf, and trust that in its new director .will be found one who has its good so much at heart. . GleTK and One Director Are to'le Chosen. . V Next Monday afternoon there is to be an election in The Dalles for the pur pose of electing a school clerk and one director for district No. 12. . This should be a matter of great import to every cit izen and all interested in the welfare of the , city, whose bcHooIs area verv im portant factor in its progrees. On those who have in v charge the direct manage tnent of the affairs of the school district much 'depends, and much is expected Therefore none should overlook the fact that the best men possible should be placed in each positions ; not those who will take -no special nor personal in terest in the matter. Monday ia the day to give -the sub ject your attention, not a week tr month after the election,- when you realize that -the wrong -man has been pat in a most important place, and begin' to find fault with every move made by the board. The district at this time needs the best business men to be found ; ..men who plan for its- financial interests in as con scientiouB a manner as they wonld for their own. So many questions are being asked re garding the qualification of voters as de cided by our late legislature, that we again publish the law governing Hi Read it carefully and further questions will be unnecessary :. "In the Ecbool districts in ' this state now created or that shall hereafter be created, any citizen of this state, male or female, married or unmarried, shall' be entitled to vote at any school election or school meeting, who ib twenty-one years of age, and has resided in the district thirty days immediately preceding the meeting or, election, and who has prop erty in the district of the value of at least $100, as shown by the last preced, ing county assessment, upon which he or she is required to pay a tax ; provided, that in districts of less than one thousand inhabitants women who are widows and male citizens over twenty-one years of age who have children in the district of school age, and who shall have resided in the district thirty -days.j as' aforesaid, shall he entitled to vote at anv school meeting for the election of ecbool di rector or school clerk." A Meat and Attractive Office. If there is one place above another which should be clean and inviting it is a physician's and a dentist office.
