THE DALLES, OREGON. TUESDAY, MARCH 7, 1899
NO 284
STOCKMEN SAID:
TO LOSE HEAVILY
Oyer 150,000 Cattle PeM on tie
Oiien Eanse.
AVERAGE LOSS,
FOUR PER CENT
Heavy Losses' to Sheep Reported From
Utah. Wyoming and Parts of Ore
gon The Latter Shows Lightest
Loss.
Denver, March 6. From reports
which have been coming to the head
quarters of the National Live Stock As
eociation for the past month the officers
of the association estimate the losses
from the recent storms to cattlemen who
have herds on the open ranges at six per
cent of tbe entire amount. This, in
round numbers, would amount to over
750,000 bead. The reports have been
received from leading stockmen and are
considered accurate as far as they go.
Oregon, Washington and Arizona suf
fered very little and trill haye only nom
inal losses. California is still suffering
from drouth, and, the outlook is bad.
The losses in Wyoming, Colorado and
tbe Dakotas as yet have not averaged 4
per cent.
In Northern and Western Texas and
Northeastern New Mexico and through
Southern Oklahoma and Indian terri
tory the heaviest losses have been with
so-called "through cattle," , that is,
cattle being moved north from the Sonth
reaching in some sections as high as 20
per cent. Taking the range section as
a whole, for the present time tbe losses
will average 4 per cent.
With the most favorable conditions
that can be expected, additional losses
may be looked for before spring, and
should the weather continue bad
through March, a heavy loss will certain
ly result.
In Utah, Wyoming and some parts of
Oregon heavy sheep losses are reported.
It is feared that there will also be heavy
eheep losses in Montana. Wyoming re
ports some instances of losses reaching
as high as 30 per cent, and some claim
that if March furnishes much bad
weather the sheep loss in that state may
reach 25 per cent. In Western Utah
the conditions appear to be almost as
bad. In several instances the reports
give tbe average for this section as being
20 per cent. These two states are the
greatest sufferers of any reported.
In New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas
and Nebraska the reports are not so dis
couraging. -
Heavy Losses of Sheep.
Lubk, Wyo., March 6. Heavy losses
are reported in bands.of sheep ranging
in the vicinity of. Lusk. , 'The various
sheep camps are snowed in at low points
where the sheep were gathered and held
for protection. The herders are short of
rations and in many cases have been
obliged to abandon tb.e herds to reach
the settlements. The sheep are rapidly
dying off. Losses are estimated at from
50 to 60 per cent. The loss of cattle is
n,ot so large. "

bicycle path two miles from tbe city to
night and captured and robbed seven
men between 8 and 11 o'clock, securing
several watches, but less than $10 in
cash. They laid a log across tbe path
and stopped the travelers as they came
to it. The first man was a candy maker
who had a bundle of aprons, which they
used to bind their prisoners as they
came, one by one. After robbing them,
they tied their hands and feet and laid
them in a row in the brush.
At 11 o'clock tbe footpads went away,
leaving the victims bound. One man
aged to roll over where another could
untie him with bis teeth, and they gave
tbe alarm, but tbe robbers had fled.
About 9 o'clock, two men, presumably
tbe same, held up T. O. Abbott, a prom
inent attorney, a few blocks from - the
same place, but he broke away and
escaped. ,
VON DIEDEPICHS
SUPERSEDED
Prince Henry Placed in Command of
Germany's Asiatic Fleet, to Show
Friendship for America.
Berlin, March 6. A high official of
tbe German navy department has in
formed the Associated Press that the.
appointment of Prince Henry of Prussia,
brother of Emperor William, to tbe
command of the East Asiatic squadron,
had been considered for months past,
and was finally decided upon as being
the most expedient, the emperor desir
ing to- show the American people that
be is thoroughly friendly to them, know
ing Henry is popular in the United
States.
When the official referred to was asked
whether the appointment was equivalent
to the disgrace of Admiral von Diedericbe
be said:
"Not exactly. If ' Diedericbe had
shown more tact last summer before
Manila, it wonld undeniably haye been
productive of good results all around.
Our government, unfortunately, was ad
vised too late of a number of occurrences
before Manila, none of which were really
important, but which showed grave want
of tact upon Diederichee part.
The above is important, as being the
first German official admission that there
haB been trouble between the Germans
and Americans in Manila bay .
I.a Orlppe Buccessf ally Treated.
"I have just recovered from the sec
ond attack of La Grippe this year," says
Mr. a Jas. A. Jones, publisher of the
Leader, Mezia, Texas. - "In ' the latter
ca6e I used Chamberlain's Cough Rem
edy, and I think with considerable suc
cess, only being in bed a little over two
days against ten days for tbe former at
tack. The second attack I am satisfied
would have been equally as bad as the
first but for the usa of this emedy as 1
had to go to bed in about six hours after
being 'struck' with it, while in tbe first
case I was able to attend to business
about two days before getting 'down.' "

Two Feet in Seven Hours. .
Cincinnati, O., March 6. The Ohio
river at 8 a. m. had reached 50,3 feet, a
rise of two feet in the preceding seven
hours. The Licking river is pouring in
its floods which has increased the riee of
the river here. The colder weather of
last night has done much to decrease the
danger of a disastrous flood. . '

Otis Has Completed Plans.
Washington, March 6. There is a
reason to expect important news from
Manila within the next fortnight. It
has developed that General Otis baa
practically completed his plans for a
grand onslaught on tbe insurgents,
which is expected to deprive them of
offensive power at least.
It is probable that be will forma large
part of bis force into columns as soon as
his reinforcements arrive, and Will push
these in parallel lines straight through
the jungles, clearing out the insurgents
in every direction as the troops move
forward.
The American troops are becoming
restless and nervous under the petty but
.annoying eharpshooting of the Filipinos,
and are so anxious to put a stop to this
that General Otis has yielded to their
desire.

Bow to Prevent Pneumonia.
You are perhaps aware that ' pneu
monia always results from a cold or from
an attack of - La Grippe. During the
epidemic of La Grippe a few years ago
when so many cases resulted in pneu
monia, it was observed that tbe attack
was never followed by that disease when
Chamberlain's Cough Remedy was used.
It counteracts any tendency of a cold or
La Grippe to result in that dangerous
disease. It is the best remedy in tbe
world for bad colds and La Grippe.
Every bottle warranted. For sale by
Blakeley fe Houghton, druggists.
