TEE EXCELENCE OF SYEUP OF FIGS
Is due not only to the originality and
uinsplicity of the combination, but also
to the care and skill with which it is
manufactured by scientific processes
known to the California Fig Sybup
Co. only, and we wish to impress upon
fell the importance of purchasing the
true and original remedy. As the
genuine Syrup of Figs is manufactured
by the Califokjua Fig- Syrup Co.
only, a knowledge of that fact will
assist one in avoiding: the worthless
imitations manufactured by other pa
ties. The high standing of the Cali
fornia Fra Sykup Co. with the medi
cal profession, and the satisfaction
which the genuine Syrup of Figs has
given to millions of families, makes
the name of the Company a guaranty
of the excellence of its remedy. It is
far in advance of all other laxatives,
S3 it acts on the kidneys, liver and
towels without irritating or weaken
ing them, and it does not gripe nor
nauseate. In order to get its beneficial
effects, please remember the name of
the Company

was thought that the late freeze might

In regard to fruit trees, it will be well
for orchardiata to heed the advice of Mr.
A. H. Buckcnan, given in a local col
umn of the Oregonian, and withhold the
ax from the fruit trees until the spring
ia well advanced. There is no question
that fruit trees generally received se
vere handling from the freeze of the firtt
week of February, and thai m some lo
calities manv have been killed. But it
will be wise to gve all a chance to rally.
Otherwise iael mav be inadvertently
made of very valuable ' timber and a
large part of the fruit crop for the next
five years needlessly sacrificed.

Didn't Say Good-By.
Walla Walla., Wash., Feb. 23.
John Wallace, a clerk in a dry goods
atore, left the city suddenly a few days
ago without bidding his wite and his
friends farewell. Wallace was married
last October to Mies Bessie Sampson,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Samp
son, well-known residents of this city.
Their married life had not been pleasant.
The last seen of Wallace was Tuesday
afternoon, when on his way to the depot
to take the train for the Sound, be
stopped to bid a friend farewell, eaying:
"I am not bidding everyone good-by."
He left his wife in straitened circumstances.
Deputv Sheriff Sexton made a short
business trip to Dufur yesterday.
Mrs. Ella Sherrar and family came up
on the Regulator last night from White
6 ilmon.
Miss II. Johanneson returned on the
boat last night from a few days' visit in
Portland.

DAMAGE NOT SO GREAT.
Wheat and Fruit liare Not Fared
JBsdly as la Keported.
So
It is human nature to look on the
dark side of the cloud, and' even the
most sanguine sometimes fail to see the
silver lining. How often do we hear the
remark, "these hard times," when the
times are at their beat. Not that we
are ail pessimists; but the habit of
complaining has so grown on ua that we
unconsciously cro9s the bridge before
ve reach it, when if we had remembered
that sufficient unto the day is the evil
thereof we might have been spared all
the unnecessary anxiety.
This seems to be the case concerning
the damage to wheat and fruit. While
it is no doubt true that a certain amount
of damage has been done by the severity
of the winter, it is already evident that
these reports have been exaggerated.
The weather bureau, as is its custom,
faaa sent out for special reports, and a
good many have been received from the
intelligent farmers in various parts of
the state. Some of these reports indi
cate that the crop has suffered; while
others show that the damage has been
slight.
Mr. Pague says that the entire crop of
Washington, Idaho and Oregon, accord
' ing to reports received at this office, was
not damaged more than two per cent.
and that re-seeding can be done without
trouble, as the ground in most sections
ia in good condition.
The fruit crop has, perhape, fared
little worse, but not as badly as many
think.
"It is my- observation," eaid Mr,
irague, "that people thing tney are
worse hurt by a freeze than they really
are. Now, I have some reports from
Wasco county, for instance, that eay
fruit is badly damaged, though th
writer oi one of these reports says his
fruit ia not killed, but that many of hi
neighbors have suffered. Other reports
from the same country, but from a dif
ferent section, say the crop, neither
fruit nor wheat.ut badly injured."

weather is fine for growing wheat. It

How to Prevent Pneumonia.
You are perhaps aware that pneU'

an attack of La Grippe. Daring the
epidemic of La Grippe a few years ago
when so many cases resulted in pneU'
monia, it was observed that the attack
was never followed by that disease when
Chamberlain's Cough Remedy was used,
It counteracts any tendency of a cold or
