is due not only to the originality and
simplicity of the combination, but also
to the care and skill with which it is
manufactured by scientific processes
known to the California Fig Sveup

all the importance of purchasing the
true and original remedy. As the
genuine Syrup of Figs is manufactured

Bow to Prevent Pneumonia.
You are perhaps aware that pneu
monia always results from a cold or from
an attack of La Grippe. Daring tbe
epidemic of La Grippe a few years ago
wben so many cases resulted in pneu

was never followed by that disease wben
Chamberlain's Cough Remedy was used.
It counteracts any tendency of a cold or 1
La Grippe to result in that dangerous
disease. It is the best remedy in the

5 ca'n vouch for the truth of the fol
lowing interesting case of clairvoy
ance, says a London Mail writer: On
August 12 a young man named l.:vii.
Cibrario. belonging to one of tbe mot-t
ancient families of Turin, while at
tempting to climb the peak of Itoc
ciamelone. iu the Maritime Alps, let!
his way. and on the following mornicj;
a search party found his body, terribly
crushed and bruised, at the bottom ol
a deep crevasse. .
Count Cibrario, the - unfortunate
young man's father, who was at Turin
and knew nothing of his son's expedi
tion to the Rocciamelone. on the nihl
of the accident aroused the rest of the
family, announcing, with tears thai
Livio was dead. He had seen him dis
tinctly, he said, blood flowing from hit
battered head, and had heard these
words spoken in a voice of terrible
anguish:
"Father, I slipped down a precipice
and broke my head, and I am dead,
quite dead."
The other members of the family
tried in vain to persuade the poor count
that the ghastly vision was nothing but
a nightmare, and the bereaved father
continued in a state of anxiety border
ing upon distraction till the morning,
when the official confirmation of the
terrible accident reached him.
This case of telegraphy, or whatever
name may be given to similar phenom
ena, is considered all the more remarka
able, as Count Cibrario is a very quiet,
matter-of-fact person, and has never
suffered from disorders of the nervous
system or dabbled in spiritualism.
ODDITIES OF DIET.
Different Article of Food Consid
ered Edible by tbe People
of Various Nations.
Among-the various nations there have
been great differences as to articles con
sidered edible, and, of course, among
such an could be procured. The. Tar
tars. Marco Polo says, ate horses, cam
els, dogs and drank mares milk. The
Scythjans also, according to Herodotus,
drank mares' milk. In China birds'
nests, rats and snails are eaten.' The
edible birds nests are found in the Nico
bars, a cluster of islands in the Bay of
Bengal. These nests, built by the Nic
obar swallows, form one of the princir
j si exports of the islands. The Greer.
landers depend largely on seals.. The
ancient Germans, according to Tacitus,
ate wild apples,- flesh and cheese. In
Abyssinia the natives cut steak from
tLe live cow; accord in ft to Bruce, ar.d
ate the meat warm with . the natural
heat, says Lippincott's.
Among the Egyptians near Elephan
tine the crocodile was an article of food.
Ihe Egyptians thought wheat and bar
lf y poor food ; they ate principally spelt
and zea. Tme priestsate beef, geese,
and took wine, but not fish. The Egyp
tians did not eat beans or raise them.
They did not eat the head of any crea
ture. They ate honey and raisins.
Among them no cattle were killed ex
cept for sacrifice. They ate sheep and
goats, and. swine's flesh only when of
fered to Bucchus and Luna. They had
no vines, but made a liquor from bar
ley. They ate fish fresh and salted, or
dried in tie sun; also quail and ducks.
EXPENSIVE POPULARITY.
Indiana. Singer Who Resides
Chicago Has a. Costly Prom
ise to Fulfill.
la
One of the best known singers of Chi
cago came from a city of 25,000 popula
tion in Indiana, says the Chicago Jour
nal. -
He had lived in the Hoosier town un
til after he was of age, and was a great
social as well as church favorite. Uis
ienor voice was soft and tender, and no
funeral of any prominent citizen was
held without his presence. Often, when
he made calls, the older women of the
city would make him promise that he
would sing at their funerals. He al
ways promised.
The tenor came to Chicago five years
ago, and by hard study made his way to
front
But now his promises are beginning
to count.
About once every two months he gets
a telegram announcing .the death of
some old friend in the Indiana city-
one at whose funeral he promised to
sing.
So the tenor packs his valise and goes
So far he has always paid his own ex
penses, but he hopes some day that
some wealthy resident of the Hoosier
place will remember him in a last will
and testament.
. Sailors' I.ove of Animals.
An incident illustrating the sailors'
attachment for nnimats recently was
reported in the London Times, Tbe
item was as follows: "As Commander
Lewis Blackburn, ot the cruiser Ulen
heim, was leaving. the hulk Itoyal Ade
Jaiae, in Chatham dock yards, on tbe
night of November 24, a ga'zeHe which
he had recentlynroughtfrom abroad ran
to meet him. and while fondly rub
bing against him fell overheard. Com
mander Blackburn, who was in full uni
form, promptly plunged into the basin
although the risk was great, the night
being intensely dark and there being
chains between the Adelaide and other
ships. Shouting for lights to be
brought, he kept himself and the ga
zelle afloat until both were rescued."
