TSS EXCELLENCE OF SYECP OF FIGS
is due not only to the originality and
simplicity of the combination, but also
to the care and skill with which it is
aaamufactured by scientific processes
known to the California Fig Svrup
Co. only, and we wish to impress upon
mil the importance of purchasing the
true and original . remedy. As the
genuine Syrup of Figs is manufactured
fcy the California Fio Syrup Co.
only, a knowledge of that fact will
assist one in avoiding- thej worthless
. imitations manufactured by other pa
ties. The high standing of the Cali
tobkia Fjo Ssitup Co. .with the medi
cal, profession, and the satisfaction
vhieh the genuine Syrup of Figs has
given to millions of families, makes
the name of the Company a guaranty
of the excellence of its remedy. It is
far in advance of all other laxatives,
as it acts on the kidneys, liver and'
towels without irritating or weaken
ing them, and it does not gripe nor
nauseate. In order to get its beneficial

Down tne Hudson.
In a letter written from New York to
tike Methodist Sunday tchool here, their
superintendent, Mrs. S. French, says,
regarding a trip down the Hudson :
"Now we start down the Hudson,
whose famed scenery is known even in
our little town, The Dalles. Winter's
now has hidden very largely its beauty,
tor I am sure its reputation consists not
in the rugged baldness of its cliffs and
high banks, but in its green grasses and
trees. Our road is along its eastern
bank, and that is very much like the
southern bank of the Columbia at The
Dalles; while the western bank is high,
and near the city, rocky. Am sure you
ikve seen views of the palisades of the
Unison; these may seem high, abrupt,
and grand to Eastern eyes, but to one
- whose ideals have found realization in
the grand mountain cliffs of our noble
Columbia, tbey are lnsignificent affairs.
True, there are wooded hills on both
tides of the river in places, and one spot
in particular reminds me of our Western
vivws of the mountains where they meet
below Xbe Dalles, only the hills had lost
considerable in height. These have
many evergreen trees on them, but the
trees are dwarfs besides the firs of Ore
gon. All the way along on the high-
lands we saw many magnificent homes,
and many towns of considerable size,
with smoking chimneys that marked the
busy factory ; in fancy we hear the whirr
ol many wheels and watched the
Jhvungs of -operators -supported by these
industries.
"The Hudson was frozen over, and
any hundred men and horses were
gathering the glittering ice - into the
large ice houses that almost continuous'
ly line the river sides.
"We alto saw great numbers of ice
boats, those affairs that the magazines
fcaveso cleverly and truthfully pictured
eoarces of easy and very enjoyable
jv'asre to their owners. We were un
iotanate in hot seeing any in use, but
tie ire was covered ; by Enow, sup
- 8tJ that was -why they nearly all
were standing with sails furled and
tightly lashed to their maste.
shone brightly, and as we neared the
great city the snow was fast disappear
ing, and our last look - at the Hudson
showed a broad stream free of ice and
full of boats and shipping."
How to Prevent Pneumonia.
You are perhaps aware that pneu
monia always results from a cold or from
an attack of La Grippe. During the
epidemic of La Grippe a few years ago
when so many caees restrlted in pneu
monia, it was observed that the attack
was never followed by that disease when
Chamberlain's Cough Remedy was used.
It counteracts any tendency of a cold or
La Grippe to result in that dangerous
disease.' It is the best remedy in the
world for bad colds and La Grippe.

THE MTJRISTAN.
A Historical Site In Jerusalem Grant
ed to OerniRny for Its i
Jfevr Church.
The Murirtan, the - site of the new
Serman church at Jerusalem, was
granted to Germany-by the sultan is
13G9. It is in the middle ot tne oity,
near the Church of the Sepulchre, and
no spot was richer in remains of the
J.atin domination to- say nothing of
the Saracenic ruins. In the -reports, of
the Palestine Survey there is a photo
graph of a fine Gothic, window by Lieut.
Kitchener E. E. to-day the sirdar.
That window, together with portions
of cloisters, a belfry and a rich double
doorway, belonged 'to the Church of
Srf Mary, built in 1130, a little earlier
than the beautiful church outside the
walls known as the Tomb of the Virgin,
the gift of Melisinda, -wife of King
Fulk. The bazars east of the Muris
tan, notably the meat market, are
medieval, and west of it lie buried be
neath the soil the buildings of the great
licspice.of the Knights of St. John.
The Iraiser will find at least one an
cient trace of German crusaders at
Jerusalem. The Birke.t-es-SuItan was
nv.idc by the Germans to water their
horses, and was. known in' Latin times
as the German Pool. Theodoricus men
tions it first. The greatest German
work in. the past was, of eourse, the rebuilding-
of the walls of the city by
Frederick II., in 1229. But the em
peror's" work lasted only ten years.

A KING'S EXECUTION GARMENT
Sale of the niood-Stained Vest "Worn
by Charles I. When He Was
. Beheaded.
The sum of 200 guineas bid recently
for the "sky-colored vest" worn by
King Charles I. on. the scaffold is not an
exorbiiant price for a- relic at once au
thentic and ghastly. Nothing is lack
ing that might make a good Jacobite's
flesh creep. The stains of blood have
been religiously preserved by a succes
sion of royalist owners, and it has be-en
pointed out that of the 13 buttonholes
only 12 had been fastened. The top
button had been removed, co that the
illusvr-ious victim might more easily
bare his neck to the executioner. "He
nothing common did or mean, upon
that memorable scene, . but with his
keener eye, the ax's edge did try."
Such was the testimony of a republican
poet, and there is no doubt that the sad
dignity with which "Charles Stuart"
comported himself in his last days
roused qualms of remorse among some
ct those contemporaries who had been
harshest in their judgment of his pub
lic policy. Admiration of the man went
far to redeem the faults of the king
and with posterity he became at once
the most sympathetic figure in the his
tory of England not even second to
Mary Queen of Scots. And of her no
body will ever believe, let the Dryas
dusts bring forward what documentary
evidence they please, that, she painted
her face and wore false hair.
It is pretty certain, if the purchaser
of King Charles' silken raiment ever
thinks-of ailmving that precioui posses
sion to pass out of his famity, that it
would fetch far more than he has given
for it. Placed in any museum it would
always be' thronged with sightseers;
the combination of royal associations
with grewsome memories would be
quite . irresistible. The most' superior.
person is attracted, though he may
oeny it, by such horrors as a book bound
in human skin, or by instruments; like
the Maiden of Nuremberg, which he
knows .to have been used for torturing
real men, and women to their death.
..Tins relish of bloodshed as distin
guished, from mere love of adventur
ous ieeds- has given vogue to whole
schools of romancers; it helped to ac
count for the sudden popularity of Mr.
Rider Haggard's tales, as it made the
fame of Maurts Jokai. The taste is. nc
doubt, morfnd, and ought not to be en
couratrvd. But it is natural, and has to
be taken into account. And the psycho
logical interest of it .is to show that we
are not, in' our feelh,'g-s, so far removed
from our barbaric ancestors as we like
to think. London Standard.
RICHES OF THE SOUDAN.
The
Question in England la
Soon the Country Can Be
Made to Pay.
Hon
How soon can the Soudan be made to
meet its own share of expense and re
lieve the Egyptian exchequer? It must
prove, at first, a costly acquisi
tion. A numerous local- force , must
be maintained, " and although the
Kgyptian army estimates may be
relieved by a certain reduction of
the native troops, the . military
establishment in the Soudan will still
constitute severe tax, to which the
province can contribute little. Even
in more flourishing days, before it was
wasted . and depopulated by the piti
less dervish . rule, the Soudan was not
particularly, productive; its export
trade did not exceed 1,000,000, and its
chief product was gum arabic. There
is some accumulation of this, it is said,
awaiting more peaceful times to "come
down country, and the industry will
no doubt revive ana develop. Agri
cultural enterprise will probably ex
tend,, especially in the lands longest
recovered; the fertile province of Don
gola, for .example, which, according to
all accounts, has made rapid progress
under the active steps taken to recol
onize. Nine-tenths of the old popula
tion has returned, many from the lower
province, nd grants of land have been
freely given to all. . The same good re
sults may be seen higher up the river,
at Abu Hamed and Berber, and fall
trade will be stimulated by. the facilities
offei-ed by several routes tic new
railway bafck to Wady Haifa, and the
now reopened desert read to Suakin.
As for the heart of the. Soudan, Khar
toum, and beyond, it is not yet m the
Egyptian possession, and it is still an
known quantity, its resources hardly
explored. Many think that it is rich
in mineral wealth, and. the existence
of a great gold-bearing field in this
southeastern extremity has long been
known, the country of the Bend Shengol,
on the confines of Abyssinia, and be
lieved to lie really the site of the Bib
lical King Solomon's mines. The sad
fact is also known that this auriferous
territory has already passed into other
hands. The man in possession is Meue-
lik, king of Abyssinia. Fortnightly
