Manila., Feb. 19. 3 p. m. The Cali
fornia volunteers abandoned the Gua
daloupe church at 5 o'clock this morn
ing, which has since been Bet on fire,
and retired to San Pedro Macati. The
' rebels still hold tbe country in the vicin
ity, of Guadalsupe, Paeig and Patero,
despite the efforts of the gunboats to
dislodge them from the jungles on both
sides of the river.
The heat is intense, and is increasing
perceptibly daily. Under present con
ditions, it is impossible to provide shade
for the troops in different parts of the
line, particularly Mc Arthur's division.
King's brigade is also exposed from San
Pedro Macati to Culiculi, where it joins
Ovenshine'e brigade.
Mr. Higgins, the manager of tbe Ma-nila-Dagupan
railroad, is believed to be
safe at Bayambang, although no com
munication has been received from him
since Friday. He was boused at Mr.
Clark's place with his wife and family,
and about six other Englishmen, some
of whom are accompanied by their wives
While it is unlikely that the natives of
the locality will harm them, it is feared
that others from distant provinces
might wreck vengeanceat their expense.
In view of the fact that, the enemy
were concentrating on the American
right, preparations were made last night
to give them a warm reception in the
event of attack.
General Ovenabine's line, consisting
originally of tbe North Dakota volun
teers, the Fourteenth infantry, and two
troops ot the Fourth cavalry,
Btretching from the beach at Camp Dew
ey to Geu. King's ri&ht, was reinforced
by two battalions of Oregon volunteers
and three troops of the Fourth cavalry
as infantry.
The Buffalo's searchlight discovering
the rebels unusually active about 10
o'clock in the evening, signaled the flag
ship for permission to fire upon them,
and, this being granted, bombarded tbe
enemy's trenches for 20 minutes. The
only effect of the fire was apparently to
drive the rebels further inland.
Beyond a few ineffectual volleys from
the trenches, which were returned with
interest, the enemy made no demonstra
tions, and all is quiet along the rest of
the line.
The Bignal corps is arranging signals
with the navy for future operations on
the left. ' r
With the exception of the port of Uo
ilo, trade with Philippine ports is still
blockaded. '
Guerrilla Tactics. "
Manila, Feb. 20, 10:10 a. m. The
enemy have apparently realized the
hopelesBnes of attacking the American
position, and are occupied chiefly "by
occasional aharp-ehooting from tbe
. jungle, whenever feasible. Fortunately,
their ignorance of the use of sights min
imizes the effect of their guerrilla tactics.

gon are near tbe old camping ground to
the eoutheast of Manila that was occu
pied by our troops before tbe capture of
the city. They are, however, facing the

oat in the country than our soldiers
were at any time last eummer. The
ground occupied by General Ovensbine'-a
brigade is low, and, during the rainy
season, marshy. The part that is not
poddy fields is covered with thick
jangles. As this is the dry season, cam
pagning out there should not be so rough
an experience as was work in the field
last July and August. The two brigades
constitute that part of the circle around
Manila between the Paeig river to the
eastward and tbe beach to the south.

THE VICTIM
OF AN ASSAULT
Charles M. Hawley Found Unconscious
and Badly Wounded on a San
Francisco Street.
San Fbancisco, Feb. 20. A man be
lieved to be Charles M. Hawley .formerly
of Salt Lake, and recently a sergeant in
the Utah battery, was found in an un
conscious condition at Grant avenue and
Geary street last night.
At the receiving hospital, where he
was taken t it is feared that his skull
must have been fractured or his neck
broken. Papers found on the person of
the injured man, among which is a mar
riage contract, satisfy the police as to
his identity. He waa evidently the vic
tim of an assault, though the motive is
unknown.
It is said that Hawley came from Den
ver three years ago. He bad not regained
consciousness early tLii morning.
The other partv to tbe marriage con
tract found in hid pocket was Alma E.
Burton, a religions worker connected
with the Peniel mission.

Mrs. B. F. Giltner Dead.
Salem. Or., Feb. 18. Mrs. B. F. Gilt
ner, wife of B. F. Giltner, wbo has been
for over 12 years recording clerk in tbe
secretary of state's office, and sister of
Senator George W. McBride and Circuit
Judge T. A. McBride, of this state, died
at the family home in Salem at 1 :15
o'clock this afternoon. She had been an
invalid for about 15 years, mainly the
result of a severe fall. Her last illness
was of eight weeks' duration.
Mre. Giltner was about 49 yeais old.
She was born in Yamhill county, and
was the daughter of James H. McBride,
being one of 14 children, of whom all but
four are alive. She has resided in Salem
about 12 years. She was married in St.
Helens. Two children survive Mrs,
Giltner-Edmond C. Giltner, private sec
retary to Senator McBride. and Miss
George Giltner. ...
Mrs. Giltner's remains will be taken to
St, Helens tomorrow morning. Tbe fu
neral will Jake place there at noon.

erally throughout Grant county are con
gratulating themselves on their escape
