THE EXCELENCE OF SYEUP OF FIGS
is due not only to. the originality and
simplicity of the combination, but also
to the care and skill with which it is
manufactured by scientific processes
known to the California Fig Syrup
Co. only, and we wish to impress upon
all the importance of purchasing' the
true and original remedy. As the
genuine Syrup of Figs is manufactured
by the California Fig Syrup Co.
only, a knowledge of that fact will
assist one in avoiding the worthless
imitations manufactured by other pafc
ties. The high standing of the Cali
fornia Fi3 Syrup Co. with the medi
cal profession, and the satisfaction
which the genuine Syrup of Figs has'
given to millions of families, makes
the name of the Company a guaranty
of the excellence of its remedy. It is
far in advance of all other laxatives,
as it acts on the kidneys, liver and
bowels without irritating or weaken
ing them, and it does not gripe nor
nauseate.- In order to get its beneficial
effects, please remember the name of
the Company

ACItjBoid Which la Hadly In Meed of
Improvement.
As often as some newspaper remarks
that "Spring has come, gentle Annie"
just so often does it become necessary to
remind the people that "the roads are in
-a bad condition," and to endeavor to in
dace them to expend some time and
money in improving them.
While there is room for criticizing all
roads leading to the city, our attention
has been directed to one in particula
which is used perhaps as much as any.
and certainly ia as much in need of ira
provement as any could possibly be,
We refer to what ia termed the lower
Dee Chutes road.leading to Seufert'e, the
Floyd place and others. Thia highway
(or low way). has long been an eye-sore
to the many who are compelled to travel
thereon. Of late the residents of that
road district have put in a great deal of
time improving that part beyond the
limits of the city, building sluice Doxea
and otherwise preventing the road being
washed out, until it is in a fairly good
condition.
It now becomes the duty of the city
to do its part. The worst part of the
thoroughfare is between the Wasco ware
house and the city limits.. As teams
- start out of town they encounter a piece
of road the rockiness of whicff leads
them to think they are on the road to
Dublin; but more annoying still is the
deep rata made by the various springs
on the hillside in the vicinity of .the oil
house.
Besides being a great annoyance to
those who are compelled to travel on it,
many find it a source of annoyance when
taking visitors to our city in that direc
tion for the purpose of showing them
the fisheries, falls,' fruit farina, etc. .along
the route.
A little expenditure by tty city on the
part of this road under their jurisdiction
would make a wondertet improvement
and be a great accommodation to" all.
What will be done in this regard before
the spring opens?
Lost.
While moving household goods recent-
y, a pair of navy blue trousers was lost,
somewhere between Filth and Court
streets and the bluff. Finder please

reach the diseased portion of the ear
There is only one way to cure deafnesn
and that is bv constitutional remedies
Deafness ia caused by an . inflamed con
dition of the mucous lining of the Eus

flamed you have a rumbling sound or
imperfect hearing, and when it is en
tirely closed, Deafnesa is the result, and
unless the inflammation can be taken
out and thiatube restored to its normal
condition, hearing will be destroyed for
ever; nine cases out of ten are caused
by catarrh, which is nothing but an in

Anxiety About Grain.
Independence, Or., Feb. 18 The
acreage 01 fall-grown gram in this
vicinity ia probably the largest for many
years, and there has been a great deal'of
anxiety aa to the effect of the cold snap
on the growing grain. It now seems
that on the south eide of the hills and in
the valleys, where the grain was covered
by the heavy snow, it ia now in fine
shape, but the same conditions do not
prevail on the north sides of these bills.
There the snow was blown off and the
grain was left without any covering to
protect it from the hard freeze, and Was
in some cases badly damaged, borne
fields will probably have to be entirely
re-sown.

How to Prevent Pneumonia.
. Ton are perhaps aware that - pneu
monia always results from a cold or from
an attack of La Grippe. During the
epidemic of La Grippe a few years ago
when so many caaea .resulted in pneu
monia. it waa observed that the attack
was never followed by that disease when
Chamberlain's Cough Remedy was used.
It counteracts any tendency of a cold or
La Grippa to result in that dangerous
disease. It ia the best remedy in the
world for bad cold 9 and La Grippe.
