LA GRIPPE.
"Dr. J. A. Hofhelmer Gives Some Hint as
to Its Treatment.
' As la grippe is so prevalent in every
part of the country, it is thought advis
able to publish the following article by
Dr. Hofheiiner, late attending surgeon
of Harlem Hospital Dispensary, New
York: ,
Bearing in mind the leading symptoms
mod tendency of tbia disease, it is wise to
aivoid any drug which will weaken' the
beart's action or depress the patient's
vitality in any way. Moat drags given
to relieve pain are depressing in .their
after effects. Moat drugs aaed to reduce
fevers are weakening to the heart's act
ion; Many people take npon themselves
the risk of doaing with phenacetine, anti
pyrin, anti fibrin, etc. These - drugs
should only be used under competent
medical advice, for cases of dangerous
syncope have followed upon the careless
partaking of these remedies.
Among the druga practically harmless
and at the same time efficacious can be
mentioned quinine. This drag in small
doses strengthens the heart's action and
reduces the fever, besides acting as an
internal antiseptic. ' As quinine in small
doses alone, will not relieve the pains or
deadache, nor entirely reduce the fever I
bavebeen in the habit of combining with
it Phenalgin as follows: -
Quinine three (3) grains in capsules
Phenalgin five or ten (5 or 10) grains in
powders at one dose, to be taken: every
threa hours. This formula has proven
-very successful ia aborting, what might
bave been a severe attack . of la grippe,
. sand rapidly curing milder cases.' .
- In common with many of the profes
sion, it had been my habit prior to my
acquaintance with the stimulant non
cJepressent character of Phenalgin to
prescribe alcholic stimulants when giv-
ing the other coal tar products, to over
come their depressing effect. Bot the
free use of alcohol is always followed by
great depteseion and reaction. The con
trary is true of the coal tar product
Phenalgin. The action of ' this drug is
soothing and its anodyne effect is usual
ly followed by refreshing sleep. - '
Convalescence from "la grippe' ia
hasUned by careful attention to nutri
ment and aided by judicious tonica of
the chalybeate variety.
An effipacious method of local treat
ment for "la grippe" and at the same
time often a most valuable preventative,
is to spray the nose and throat eeveial
times daily with one of the many anti
septic solutions in the- market, of which
the principal ingredients are boric acta,
eucalyptol.and other essential eila.
It should be remembered that this
disease attacks with greatest 'severity
those whoee vital forces are made weaker
by indiscretions and excessive ' nerve
strain. Therefore the rales of health
should be carefully observed, especially
those referable to sleep and proper diet.
In giving these hinta for treatment, it
is not desired to assume "lagripps" is a
diseaee easily- overcome ' without close
personal attention by the physician, but
there are very many cases which other
wise would become severe and serioue,
that could be checked by promptly fol
lowing the course herein outlined.
CATARRH OF
THE STOMACH
A Pleasant, Simple: but Safe and Ef
fecual Core for It.
Catarrh of the stomach has long been
considered the next thing to incurable.
The usual symptoms are a full or bloat
ing sensation after eating, accompanied
sometimes with sour and watery risings,
a formation of gases, causing pressure
on the heart and lunga and difficult
breathing; headaches, fickle appetite,
nervousness and a general played but
languid feeling. '
There is often a foul taste in the mouth
coated tongue and if the interior of the
stomach could be seen it would show a
slimy, inflamed condition.
The cure of thia common and obsti
nate trouble is - found in a treatment
which cansea the food to be readily , thor
oughly digested before it can to ferment
and irritate the delicate mucus surfaces
of the stomach. To secure a prompt and
healthy digestion is the one necessary
thing to do, and when normal digestion
is secured the catarrhal condition will
have disappeared.
According to Dr. Uarlanson the safest
and best treatment is to use after each
meal a tablet, composed of Diatase,Asep
tio Pepsin, a little Nux, Goldef Seal.
and Iruit acida. These tablets can now
be found at all drugstores ' under, the
name of Stuart's Dyspepsia Tablets, and
not being a patent medicine can be used
with perfect safety and assurance that
healthy appetite and thorough digestion
will certainly follow their regular use af
ter meals.
Mr. N. J. Booher, of 2710 Dearborn
street, Chicago, 111., writes: ''Catarrh
is a local . condition resulting from a
neglected cold in the head, .whereby the
lining membranes of the" nose become
inflamed and - the,, poisonous discbarge
therefrom passing backward into the
throat reaches the stomach, thus pro
ducing catarrh of the stomach. Medical
authorities prescribed for. me for three
years for catarrh of the stomach without
cure, but today I am the happiest of
men after using only one box of Stuart's
Dyspepsia Tablets. I cannot find ap
propriate words to express my good feel
ing. I have found flesh, appetite and.
sound rest from their use."
Stuart's Dyspepsia Tablets ia the safest
preparation as well as the simplest and
most convenient remedy for any form of
indigestion, catarrh .of the stomach,
billiousness, sour stomach, . heartburn
and bloating after meals.
Send for little book mailed free, on
stomach troubles, by addressing Stuart

judge should see and ; admire her
beautiful baby., .
"Isn't he a darling?" - she asked,
holding him forward for her fathw'a

Absolute silence. .
"Now, dear Judge Sheldon, do just

The judge never lifted his head.
"I think the precious looks just, like

This appeal moved him. He lifted his

Thli Tear'i Crop the Larareat in Many
Year Sow They Are Handled T,
. the Mexicans Who Prepare
Them for Market. .
Not much, is heard about the pecan
nut, not even here in southwest Texas,
where it grows wild and, in favorable
seasons, is harvested in great abun
dance. The pecan- nut has always had
a good market value, butt it is only with
in the past few years that shipments
have been made from here to eastern
and northern markets. These ship
ments were at first small, but the deal
ers have found the profits so satisfac
tory that their scale of buying is in
creasing each year, and carload ship
ments have now become common. "It
requires considerable capital to handle
pecans in carload lets, and for this rea
son the small dealer is ait a disadvantage
compared with the more wealthy cot
ton broker who makes pecan buying
a side issue to his regular business.
.The profits are certain and the pecan
nuts are obtained with' no difficulty.
The nuts are "brought into the city
from all parts of the surrounding
country by small farmers, small Voys
and professional Mexican pecan pick
ers. They are sold to the local dealers
at low prices, the pickers being satis
fied with very reasonable wages. Lo
cal pecan dealers not only receive the
nuts from the above-named sources,
but also ibuy large quantities from the
small merchants of the little towns of
the. surrounding country.
This year's crop of pecans in soilth
west Texas is :the largest in many
years, and several million pounds of tfhe
nuts will be exported and- shipped to
the markets of this country before the
season- closes. Before shipment is
made from, here the nuts are run
through -an, assorting- sieve and. then
classified according to size and thick
ness of shell. The soft-shell pecan-commands1
a- much higher price thatn the
!hard she'll. The latter comes from a
long-lived' tree, which also produces in
more abundance than the soft-shell
tree.
All the streams1 around San Antonio
are lined with pecan groves, and for
several weeks to come they' will be
visited by parties of nut hunters. There
are few households in' San Anttonio in
which a bountiful store of the nuts for
the coming' winter will not be laid up.
Many poor Mexican families here make
the pecan kernels their primary article
of food during tlhe fall and winter
months.
.The Mexican housewife is an adept
at preparing the kernels ss delicious
table dKshes. A kind of flour is made
from the -dried kernels.. This flour
makes a wholesome, ' finely-flavored
bread. The nuts are also made into de
licious puddings and. cakes. The Mex
ican pecan candyman is an oldi institu
tion of San Antonio and is well remem
bered by tourists who visit San Antonio.
This is his busy season. He is now lay
ing ini his stock of pecans and letting
them dry sotbat the work of shelling
them can begin before-the winter tour
ist travel starts this way. When the
nuts are thoroughly dried the kernels
are removed in halves. They are then
made to form the principal part of a
most tempting and) really delicious
candy. These Mexican candymen sell
their stock on the streets exclusively,
the tourists and healthseekers being
their best patrons. This sale of pecan
candy on the streets is a custom peculiar
to San Antonio. It is not to be seen
in any city of Mexico.
The Mexicans are experts in remov
ing the kernels from the shell and quite
an industry is being built up here in
that work. . It was. started in a some
what interesting manner. A local con
fectioner sent to a friend in New York,
who was also in the confectionery busi
ness, a few pounds of the pecan kernels
as a present. The New York confection
er then sent an order to his friend in
San Antonio for 200 pounds of the ker
nels., The recipient of the order secured-
the services of a number of Mex
icans, and the desired1 quantity of pure
meat kernels was quickly turned out
and. shipped. This shipment led: to
others, and the demand continues to
increase. -.- Large shipments of kernels
are now made from San Antonio every
rail and. winter to New York, Chicago,
St. Louis and other eastern and north
ern cities. Fancy prices are obtained
for the kernels from the" large confec
tionery houses, and the profits are
large. The labor employed there is inexpensive.-
An attempt was made recently-
to remove the kernels by means
of a machine, but it was quickly found
that the Mexicans performed! the work
more satisfactorily and cheaply than
the machine. , . ; .
The polishing, of the pecan nut is also
a growing industry here. The nuts
command a trifle better price when the
remnants of bark are removed and their
surface polished. The polishing . is
done by placing the nuts in a large
cylinder, which is revolved rapidly. '
.Tlfe pecan tree flourishes in every part
of southwesi.T-exas, wherever its roots
can reach- water or moisture. The
profits in raising the nuts are so large
that all the grove's now in existence are
'being protected! and .many orchards of
the trees have been planted by farmers
in the past few years. There is one or
chard of pecan trees of several hundred
acres near Brownwoody Tex. ' The or
chard has been grown from the direct
planting of the nuts. It is now several
years old and will soon begin to bear.
