Enemy Sustained Fifty Casualties to
Every One Suffered by the Amer
icans Gen. Otis Sends "in a List
of Yesterday's Casualties.
Manila, Feb. 12. Yesterday after
noon a reconnoitering party of the
Fourteenth infantry come upon a large
body of the enemy in the jangle near
camp Dewey. The rebels were attacked
and fell back upon the main line of the
insurgents.
The Fourteenth infantry, the North
Dakota volunteers and the Fourth cav
alry then engaged the enemy and drove
them with a fusillade from automatic
Colt guns. The enemies loss is severe,
and they are scattered along the beach
seeking cover from the fire of the Amer
icans. Privates Ranson, Hensen and Saun
ders, of company F, Fourteenth infant
ry, and two troopers of the Fourth cav
alry were wounded. '
The bodies of two members of the Cal
ifornia regiment . were subsequently
found in the bushes to the right of the'
line. . They had been shot to pieces by
the rebels. One of theee men have been
identified as Private Abneppam, but the
other has not yet been identified.
The heat today, knocked out many
more of our men than the bullets of the
Filipinos, especially in the territory
north of Malabon, where the Kansas
regiment was stationed. Fully a score
were taken to th hospitals. The rail
road is now open to Calocan, and sup
plies are being forwarded by rail.
The Battle of Calocan.
Manila, Feb. 11. 2:15 p. m. The
following additional particulars regard
ing the capture of Calocan have been
obtained: The insurgents had been
concentrating for days at Calocan, and
' Otis, the ' American commander, . de
termiped to attack them. , He instruct-
' ed his commanders accordingly, and re
quested the assistance ef the naval forces
under the command of Dewey. Major
General MacArtbur reported that all
was ready, and at 3 o'clock he received
the following message :
"Commanding general orders you to
go ahead with programme. Barry."
The attack began immediately.' The
monitor Monadnock and the cruiser
Charleston shelled Calocan and the
country north of it for half an hour.
MacArthur's artillery also did effective
work from a hill in the rear. Brigadier
General Harrison G. Otis, with his
brigade, consisting of the Kansas regi
ment, the Montana regiment, and Third
artillery (regulars), acting a.a. infantry,
advanced handsomely, pushing forward
in the face of Filipino bullets as cheerful
as if tbey had been enowballs. The
enemy was utterly routed and fled to
the mountains.
At 6 o'clock "cease firing" and "re
call" were sounded. The troupe were
then Well through Calocan and to the
north of it. MacArtbur established his
lett at Calocan and strengthened his
lines for the night.
By the capture of Calocan control of
much of the rolling stock of the Manila-
Dagnpan railroad was . obtained. The
city is now quieter and business is better
than at any time since the . outbreak of
hostilities,. - ., . , v

CATARRH OF
THE STOMACH
A Pleasant, Simple: but Safe and Ef
. fecual Cure for It.
Catarrh of the stomach has long been
considered the next thing to incurable.
The usual symptoms are a full or bloat
ing sensation after eating, accompanied
sometimes with sour and watery risings,
a formation of gases, causing pressure
on the heart and lungs and difficult
breathing; beadacbes, fickle appetite,
nervousness and a general played out
languid feeling.
There is often a foul taste in the mouth
coated tongue and if the interior of the
stomach could be seen it would show a
slimy, inflamed condition.
The cure of this common and obsti
nate trouble is found, in a treatment
which causes the food to be readily .thor
oughly digested before it can to ferment
and irritate the delicate mucus surfaces
of the stomach: To secure a prompt and
healthy digestion is the one necessary
thing to do, and when normal digestion
is secured the catarrhal condition . will
have disappeared. .
According to Dr. Harlanson the safest
and best treatment is to use after each
meal a tablet, composed of Diatase, Asep
tic Pepsin, a little Nux, Golden Seal
and iruit acids. These tablets can now
be found at all drugstores under the
name of Stuart's Dyspepsia Tablets, and
not being a patent medicine can be used
with perfect safety and assurance that
healthy appetite and thorough digestion
will certainly follow their regular use af
ter meals.
Mr. N. J. Boober, of 2710 Dearborn
street, Chicago, 111., writes:. "Catarrh
is a local condition resulting from a
neglected cold in the head, whereby the
lining membranes of the nose become
inflamed and the poisonous discbarge
therefrom passing backward into the
throat reaches the stomach, thus pro
ducing catarrh of the stomach. Medical
authorities prescribed for me for , three
years for catarrh of the stomach without
cure, but today I am the happiest of
men after using only one box of Stuart's
Dyspepsia Tablets. I cannot find ap
propriate words to express my good feel
ing. I have found flesh, appetite and
sound rest from their nse." .
. Stuart's Dyspepsia Tablets is the safest
preparation as well as the simplest and
most convenient remedy for any form of
indigestion, catarrh of the stomach,
billionsness, sour stomach, heartburn
and bloating after meals.

days against ten days for the former at

would have been equally as bad as the

NOW THE TURKEY FOOT.
New Charm That Is Worn by
the Superstitious.
The Rabbit's Foot, So Lone Popular,
B Been Displaced by the New
Mascot An Old Nearro's
Tallt.
The rabbit's foot is not in the race
any longer as a charm. What ha
caused the downfall of buimie's hind
foot as a protection against- aU - e,vil
and an assurance of perpetual good
luck for its happy possessor is rather a
puzzling1 question and on-i which the
fair sex and the advocates of the new
fad would .find it hard to explain. Per
haps the late presidential campaign.
may have had something' to do with it..
Every ' one knew that the silver candi
date was presented with a rabbit's foot
immediately upon receivings his nom
ination, and that the mascot complied
with all the requirements of the case,
for it was - the left hind foot of a molly
cottontail, that had been killed in the
full of the moon, at 12 o'clock at night
in a graveyard, by a red-Headed nigger."
Well, the rabbit having enjoyed so
great and so long a run of popularity,
in the natural course of events, the
time has come for him to step down
and out. , He has done so, and his place
has been taken by one of the kings of
the" farmyard the lordly turkey.
Fashion decrees that in order to be
lucky one must wear in some manner
or possess in some shape or other a
turkey's claw. , '
This fad is so new that it has hardly
reached the counters yet, except in one
or two shops which pride themselves
upon bringing out all the most ex
clusive novelties. Of. course, it will
eventually become as common as the
craze for rabbits' feet, but to-day it is
a very difficult thing to find a turkey's
claw prepared in the proper style for a
charm against bad luck.
The most popular style at present is
the natural claw, properly treated by a
taxidermist, its shank covered by a sil
ver or goldcap set with an amethyst,
turquoise or the new green stone,
which resembles an emerald. The tip
of the liail is covered with a gold or
silver cap, with a fine chain to match
the cap from the shank to what one
might call the .wrist of the claw, and a
pretty scarlet ribbon bow with long
ends tied just below the shank.
These new mascots are 30 arranged
that they can be hung up as ornaments,
or used as paper weights or table orna
ments. In one case I saw one profusely
bejeweled, which was intended for a
cabinet. As dress ornaments they are.
so far, but little used, though I was told
they were being fashioned into clasps
for fastening golfcapes at the neck.
T 1 . . . .1 1 .1 1 .1 Jt T 1.-7
ever heard of the turkey's claw as be
ing an unlucky or lucky charm.
Why, yes, he replied. "Down south,
where I come from, it is better and
luckier to steal your Thanksgivin or
Christmas turkey. I don't hold with
the fashion of stealing anything, but if
you can only steal your turkey for the
holiday dinner you will have good luck
all the rest of the year. In the old days
the 'massa' would put away a lot of tur
keys, and the darkies would go in the
night, just at 12 o'clock, and steal the
birds." . -
"But what about the claw? What
good luck does that bring?"
"Why, bless your heart, don't you
know that the turkey's foot is an aw
ful lucky thing? You must take the
claw after you have cleaned your tur
key a stolen one, mind you dip it in
salt, bury it, you better say, in a dish
of salt for a whole' week, and let it lie
there, bo that all the bits of flesh which
stick to it are cleaned away, and your
foot is just as sweet as a nut. Then
you take it out and scrape it and clean
it and polish it, until it just shines like
a piece of stone. Then you put it up
over your door, and no bad luck, sick
ness or anything can come in during
the year." .
"Will it keep out death?"
"No, ma'am, it will not. Don't you
konw sometimes death is the biggest
piece of good luck that can happen to
you?"
"But do you know why turkey's foot
is lucky?" -.
"I never heard but one reason, and
that was that after the devil had
tempted Eve and was crawling away
after getting her to eat the apple he
came across the turkey's path and the
turkey lifted up his right foot and
struck-at his head. The blow was so
hard that the devil was stunned for a
moment. And that is the reason of the
turkey's right foot being lucky against
bad fortune." N. Y. Herald. .
