In discussing the development of the imperialistic sentiment in the United States, the - London Times says that it has grown more, rapidly In the Western ' states -"the quarter to which the world must look for the center of American power in the near future." This is not an isolated opinion, but, as the cable dispatches relate, is common to Briiish students of American affairs, who recognize the power and the expansive spirit of the West without being able to explain why people so far removed from the seaboard should be so anx ious to acquire naval dominion. There -is no mystery, however, about the ambition or about the strength that is back of it. The West is now the governing factor in the nation's politics by force of numbers, and its influence is increasing every year, because it is still the growing part of the country. Therefore, what it wants in Washington it is likely to get, and it wants naval dominion, for the very simple reason that naval dominion will facilitate trade. Though the West is Inland, it is constaBtly looking outward, because it is a tremendous producer of . ex ports. And as its vast resources are further developed the diversity in its exports which has begun already will increase and compel a recourse to . still wider and wider markets. . It is natural, therefore, that the West should I00K torwara eagerly to a time when American commercial su premacy shall be fortified by mari time supremacy and when the Amer ican flag will always be supported by adequate force wherever it may wave. Chicago Times Herald. The United States has nearly twice as many postoffices as any country, the total being 71,468, and the larg est number of employes, 198,605. . Germany is second, with 39,389 of fices and 183,212 employes, and Great Britain is third, with 20,705 offices and 144,700 employes. In the length of mail routes we are away aheaJ, because of our enorm ous territory. We send our mails over 172,696 miles ot railway and 286,451 miles of what we call star routes, embracing steamship linea, stages and other methods of carrying mail. Germany comes next, with 28,634 railway miles and 67,066 miles of other service. Our postal cars last year ran 264,654,908 miles, those of Germany 124,550,625 miles, and those of France 75,212,765. We spent on postal service in 1898, $90, 626,269. Germany was second with $74,337,430, and Great Britain third, with $40,139,835. Oregonian. Announcement.
