THE EXCELLENCE OF SYlfcUP OF FIGS
Js due not only to the originality and
simplicity of the combination, but also
to the care and skill with which it is
manufactured by scientific processes
known to the California Fig SrBUP
Co. only, and we wish to impress upon
All the importance of purchasing the
true and original remedy. As the
genuine Syrup of Figs is manufactured
by the California Fiq Syrup Co.
only, a knowledge of that fact will
Assist one in avoiding the worthless
imitations manufactured by other pa
ties. The high standing of the Caxi
FOKNIA Fia Syrup Co. with the medi-'
cal profession, and the satisfaction
which the genuine Syrup of Figs has
given to millions of families, makes
the name of the Company a guaranty
of the excellence of its remedy. It is
iar in advance of all other laxatives,
as it acts on the kidneys, liver and
"bowels without irritating or weaken
ing them, and it does not gripe nor
nauseate. In order to get its beneficial

"Talk a"bout Kansas as we may, she's
' up-to-date, and so are her girls, who
are determined to show the eastern girls
that Hobson isn't "in it" when it comes
' to the western states, where the graES-
hoppers sit on the sweet potato vineand
&eep guard while the young ranchman
collects 1000 kisses, which have been
won in a fair and square, bet. In that
state the teacherB not only teach the
young idea how to shoot, but the young
men how to kiss. If to secure a teacher's
certificate these young ladies have to
pass an examination in this art, there
must be a large number of candidates for
echool superintendent, and no doubt
those from other states will be needing a
change of climate. -
It ail came about this way : Miss Lucy
Withers, a . school teacher of Golden,
Kan., who for some reason is an admirer
of Jerry Simpson, bet 1000 kisses against
41000 worth of steers on the sockless
- statesman's success in' the recent . elec
tion. She lost, and is now paying the
bet on the installment plan, the fortu
tiate young ranchman who won coming
around each week and collecting twenty
kisses.
If microbes are as thick as grasshop
pers, what a "gathering there will be'
in the course of a year. In the mean
time it becomes the duty of some green
eyed monster to introduce the prohibi
tion law, which, if we are not mistaken,
would be welcomed by both parties. A
legitimate debt is the hardest kind to
-collect. '

There was quite a deputation of Gilliam
councy citizens in Portland recently
on their way to Salem, armed witb a re
monstrance against the cutting off of 15
townships from the southern end of
their countv. S. E. Barker, county
treasurer of Gilliam, H. N. Frazier,
' -county clerk ;F. M. Pliter, county com'
xnissioner, and W. L. Wilcox, a pro mi
nent citizen of Condon, had charge of a
long remonstrance, signed, they said, by
700 residents of Gilliam county, many
signers living in the locality proposed to
foe cot off to help form the county of
Wheeler.
.The remonstrators fear that the loss
1 f 1 t
of the rich section around Fossil ' wil
leave Gilliam county in . euch a ' plight
that it cannot support a county govern
ment. 'The north end of Gilliam, along
the south bank of the 'Columbia, they
say, is an unproductive waste, and the
proposed change would; leave Gilliam
the smallest county in .Eastern Oregon.
All .their -timber and eumnrer range,
and even the . bulk of their running
streams woulcTbe snatched from them
at pne'feltBwoop...The law makers at
Salem are very likely to hear from the
remonstrators of Gilliam-county before
they decide to form the hew county of

You are perhaps aware that pneu

an attack of La Grippe. Daring the
epidemic of La Grippe a few years ago
when so many cases resulted in pneu

was never followed b j that disease when
Chamberlain's Cough Remedy was used.
It counteracts any tendency of a cold or
