permanently beneficial effects and were
satisfied with the transient action ; but
now that it is generally known that
Syrup of Figs will permanently over
come habitual constipation, well in
formed people will not buy other laxa

One Minute Cough Cure, cures.
THat Is what It wu made for.
FOUND WANTING.
Composed Principally of Kicking on the
Stage and in the Andience.
There were many features beside that
of the boy "Wanted" in the play Satur
day night. As is the case with the ma
jority ot plays put upon the etage (and
we are sorry to say, demanded), in this
enliichtened(?) age, there was wanting
an air of refinement which was conspic
uous for its absence in the "Boy Want
ed," and in fact most of the actorB of the
play. While one can scarcely say of
these prodnctions that they are inde
cent, ye they border so closely on the
forbidden that a . refined audience be
comes really nauseated before the cur
tain falls. In the first act the leading
soubrette (who by the way was not pres
ent on this occasion) kicks. In the
second act the second lady ( 7) kicks a
little higher. In the third act the en
tire company of beautiful, well-formed,
rare old hand-painted relics of former
greatness, touch the ceiling, and the au
dience is delighted, while some mother
who has mie-judged the play and takeu
her sweet little daughter, is beard to
remark : "Now, dearie, there's nothing
modest in that at all. I wieh we had
remained at home."
The absence of plot in these produc
tions is sadly missed. However, this
could be overlooked, if as in tbe"Dazzler"
there is some merit good singing, good
dancing, or even a pretty girl or two.
Instead there is nothing but a conglom
erated mass of nothing but child's play.
By way of a slight variation the "boy
wanted" made his appearance between
acts and made a sign-board of himself,
much to the disgust of the audience.
However, we have been speaking in
general terms, lo say that there was
not a redeeming-feature in the play
would be an injustice. The fault is most
ly in the play. The lack of an opportu
nity to dieplav the talent which may be
possessed by the actors. The musical
selections by the old German were like
an oasis in a desert, and well executed.
The tumbling of the two young girls was
good ; but the etar of the evening was
the tragedian, who did some good acting
and his comedy piano BDecialties were
well received.
The difficulty encountered in deter
mining the merit of a play before its
production seems uneurmocntable. It
is misrepresented to the manager, who
I so becomes discouraged in bringing
to the city actors of inerrit like Ward,
Effie Ellsler. Milton Nobles, and others,
who are almost sure to be given an icy
reception, while playa. of the Saturday
night caliber draw crowded houses.- t
The newspapers advertise such shows
from copy- furnished by the advance
agents, placing stars as a credit, and the
nly authority we have for other men
tion are the papers of other cities, and
we are about coming to the conclusion
that the Valley papers are bribed, as
the Oregonian, Statesman and many
others so often speak well of meritlees
productions.
