A few days ago the London
Chronicle said it would be fortunate
for the United States ii the Filipinos
should offer some resistance to Amer
ican occupation of the islands. Re
sistance, i - intimated, would be so
d so thoroughly crushed
.A nerer be attempted
e Americans would have
to establish an orderly
cent government in the is
land. This if sound sense, of course.
If Aguinaldo should be tempted to
fight at Iloilo or anywhere else the
end of bis career as a mischief-maker
would "come immediately, and such
concessions to his countrymen as the
United States would otherwise grant
would be postponed. The Spaniards
bribed Aguinaldo into submission
just before the war with the United
' States began. Perhaps he would like
another subsidy. If this is his ex
pectation he will be woefully disap
pointed. The American motto will
be: Millions for stamping out in
surrection if it should come, but not
a cent for tribute.
La Orlppe Successfully Treated.
"I have just recovered from the sec
ond attack of La Grippe this year," Says
Mr. Jas. A. Jones, publisher of the
Leader, Mexia, Texas. "In the latter
case I used Chamberlain's Cough Rem-'
edy and I think with considerable suc
cess, only being in bed a little over two
days against ten days for the former at
tack. The second attack I am satisfied
would have been equally as bad as the
first bnt for the use of this remedy as 1
had to go to bed in about six hours after
being 'struck' with it, while in the first
case I was able to attend to business
about two days before getting 'down.' "

Deafness Cannot be Cared.
by local applications, as they cannot
reach the diseased ' portion of the ear..
There is only one way to cure deafness
and that is by constitutional remedies
Deafness is caused by an inflamed con
dition of the mucous lining of the Eus
tachian Tube. When this tube is in
flamed you have a rumbling sound or
imperfect bearing, and when it Is en
tirely closed, Deafness is the resnlt, and
unless the inflammation can be taken
out and this tube restored to its normal
condition, hearing will be destroyed for
ever; nine cases out of ten are caused
by catarrh, which is nothing but an in
flamed condition of the mucous sur
faces. We will give One Hundred Dollars for
any case of Deafness (caused by catarrh)
that cannot be cured by Hall's Catarrh
Cure. ' Send for circulars ; free.

You well know that a good drug sign
is the patronage which is bestowed o'n
the store. It is the purity of the goods
handled and the manner of doing busi
ness that makes and keeoB Ibis business.
We are pleased with the result of our ef
forts to supply the best drugs at the
best price. We are particular about the
compounding of them.
A notable suggestion contained in
the state papers submitted to the
legislature by the retiiing and in
coming governors is that which
urges, on grounds of humanity and
decency, that insane women be con
veyed from their homes to the asy
lum by an attendant of their own
sex, and that such attendant be a
person experienced in the cire of .the
insane and sent out from the asylum'
for the purpose. The suggestion will
win the appreciation of all good
women'. " It may be hoped also that
it will win the indorsement of the
lawgivers to whom it is addressed,
since for them to ignore it will be to
continue a practice which is a blot
upon the civilization of any en
lightened community, and should
long ago have been expunged from
that of our state. Oregonian.
The official organ of the German
government says that ."the sudden
and startling appearance of the
United States in the political arena
demands that Germany should make
iresu exertions. mere is a possi
bility that the Kaiser, is using the
United States as a menace in order
to cafry out his plans for a great inT
crease in his navy. If the German
people are wise, however, they will
not be deluded by the Kaiser's alarm
ist talk. The United States is by
far the most peaceable among the
great nations. Moreover, its inter
ests do not conflict with those of
Germany or any other country at
the present time.
Here is a most unkindly cut from
the New York Sun: "JA. large num
ber of statesmen whose doting con
stituents have persuaded them to

surcharged with farewell addresses
The proofreaders on the Congression
al Record expect a hard spring."
(ranee is first in the use of horse
less carriages. But we seem to be
ahead in making them. A French
order for 1500 has just been placed
in this country.
Governor Geer gave some father
ly advice to the new members of the
legislature speaking from ripe ex
perience. His a Jvice ought to be ap
preciated and followed.
