THE EXCELLENCE OF SYBUP OF FIGS
' Is due not only to the originality and
simplicity of the combination, bnt also
o the care and skill with which it is
manufactured by scientific processes
known to the California Fig Syrup
Co, only, and we wish to impress upon
all the importance of purchasing the
true and original remedy. As the
genuine Syrup of Figs is manufactured
by the California. Fig Syrup Co.
only, a knowledge of that fact will
Assist one in avoiding the worthless
imitations manufactured by other pot
ties. The high standing of the Cali
fornia Fia Sykup Co. with the medi
cal profession, and the satisfaction
which the genuine Syrup of Figs has
given to millions of families, makes
the name of the Company a guaranty
of the excellence of its remedy. It is
iar in advance of all other laxatives,
as it acts on the kidneys,, liver and
bowels without irritating or weaken
ing them, and it does not gripe nor
nauseate. In order to get its beneficial
effects, please remember the name of
the Company

- inn men, is a visitor to our cUy today.
Mr. Fred Whitney returned last night
from a few days' business trip to Port
land. A. D. Spencer, of the John V. Fare
well Co. of Chicago, is in the city todav

time in the hospital in Portland, is ex
pected borne this evening.
Messrs. Wheat and Peetz, of Moro,

Oar Land OOloe Business.
The report of the land office in this
city for the month of December is very
flattering, an unusual amount of busi
ness bein done, as is shown by the fol
lowing account :
Receipts from all sources during the
. month, $33,605.09.
..Seventy-four homestead entries, cov-rf-eHn-
11,279 07 acres. -Thirty
hnaj homesLeads.
' Six final timber cultures.
Five original desert land entries.
One hundred and sixty cash entries,
25,558.81 acres.
TTLmony and other feeB collected,
'6SM.
Twenty-four contested cases served
during the month.
- Unearned fees received in cases eua
pended, $5,285.11. ' -
Daring the month $36,074.31 has been
forwarded from this office.
The Chronicle can safely assert that,
taken all in all, this report is not equaled
by any land office in the state.
"On the Suwanee River," which
comes to the Vogt opera bouse on next
Monday (January 16th), tells a Btory dif
ferent from the usual ran of melodrama.
The blind girl, Dora; the witless Frank,
and Caleb Croc, the miser, are three
characters rarely introioced in a play.
Willard Newell is the villain of the vil
lainous, grasping, sneaking miser of the
very life. It is pronounced a fine char
acter study, repulsive but true in every
word and movement. Stella Mayhew as
Aunt Lindy, is a living picture in walk,
talk and gesture of the old black mam
my, familiar in tbe South, while the
other members of the company are
-equally adept in their parts. The scenic
equipments are taken from the pictur
esque shores of the old Suwanee, and
the various scenes, of which there is an
-entire carload, are assured to be true to
- the very life of tbe country around this
famouB stream.

Grip in Oakland.
Oakland, Cat. Jan. 11. An epidemic
of grip is prevalent in this city. Health
Officer Dunn says he thinks there are at
least 4000 cases, and if the weather con
ditions do not aid the health depart
ment in checking the disease a repeti-
tion of the epidemic of eight years ago
may be expected. . So far it is only man
ifest in a mild form, but' there have
been several death and there may be
more. It is probable that all buildings
will be fumigated and instructions is
sued to heads of families warning them
of the existing conditions.
La Urlppe Sucoes folly Treated.
"I have just recovered from the eec
ond attack of La Grippe this year," says
Mr. Jas. A. Jones, publisher of the
Leader, Mexia, Texas. "In the latter
case I used Chamberlain's Cough Rem
edy, and I think with considerable suc
cess, only being in bed a little over two
days against ten days for the former at
tack. The second attack I am satisfied
would have been equally as bad as the
first bnt for the use of this remedy as 1
had to go to bed in about six boars after
being 'struck' with it, while in the first
case 1 was able to attend to business
about two days before getting 'down.' "
