TEE EXCELLENCE OF SYEUP OF FIGS
is due not only to the originality and
simplicity of the combination, but also
to the care and skill with which it is
manufactured by scientific processes
known to the California Fig Svrop
Co. only, and we wish to impress upon
11 the importance of purchasing the
true and original remedy. As the
genuine Syrup of Fig's is manufactured
by the California Fig Strtjf Co.
only, a knowledge of that fact will
assist one in avoiding1 the worthless
imitations manufactured by other pah
ties. The high standing' of the Catjc
TOBnia Fio Svktjp Co. with the medi
cal profession, and the satisfaction
Which the genuine Syrup of Figs has
given to millions of families, makes
the name of the Company a guaranty
of the excellence of its remedy. It is
far in advance of all other laxatives,
as it acts on the kidneys, liver and
bowels without irritating or weaken
ing them, and it does cot gripe nor
nauseate. In order to get its beneficial
effects, please remember the name of
the Company

AN OLD RECORD.

la looking over and classifying the old
records r.t the court houBe, many very
interesting documents have been dis
covered, which call to mind events long
past and gone, and revive memories of
pioneer Dallesites, who have years ago
passed to the beyond, or in a few cages
are still livinjr. but have taken up their
residence in other places, perhaps oc
casionally thinking of early days in The
Dalles and of friends who still reside
here.
Yesterday we etepned into the court
room and found Judge Maya and J.-O.
Mack perusing a list of grand jurors and
petty jurors, which bad been drawn on
the 21st day of June, 1856, when Oregon
was still a territory. Among the forty
iiine jurors drawn we notice the follow
ing who still reside in The Dalles : Geo.
Snipes, John Irvine and M. M. Cashing.
.-Among the others, many of whom have
long since joined the silent majority, but
- whoee sons are now prominent citizens,
filing the positions made vacant by
Iheir demise, are ; W. I. Biglow, N.
lCocp O. Humason, Joaiah Marsh, P.
-Craig. L. P. Henderson, John Stevens,
3D. Bolton, Geo. Mitchell, Vic Trevitt,
Wni. C. JLaughlio, Justin Chenoweth,
H. P. Isaacs, Win. Logan, J. P. Booth,
John Chapman, John Marsh.
To those of U3 who cannot realize what
great changeahave taken place in The
D j lies since the early residentera came
here, it is extremely interesting to listen
to the recital of events which took place
at that time and during the years which
Lave followed. Many younger ones,
however, remember well when they
were just tall enough to reach up to the
delivery window when the postoffice
was in the old Waldron drug store at
the foot of Washington street, and ask
Dr. Craig if there was anything for
"me." lie always had a amile for them,
and w as loved by all the little ones for
bis kindly treatment. - Then they re
member when Mr. O. Humason died, of
bow the children were impressed by the
tolling of the bell, and of the immense
funeral procession which followed his
remains to the cemetery, and of how all
the city mourned. .
We have all heard time and again of
the dreadful accident when the "Brother
Jonathan," on ita way between Portland
and San Francisco, on the 30th of July,
1865, ran into a rock near Cresent City
and waa lost with nearly alt on board,
and among the . passengers were Wm
Logan and wife, father and mother of
. Dr. Logan. Vic Trevitt was well known
to all later residents, and many attendtd
his funeral, wh'en the remains were
taken down by boat and buried on
Memalocee island, in deference to a re
quest made by him many years before
Most ot the others whose names were
mentioned, died in this city within the
memory of our readers, the last death
neriiaps, being that of '; Daniel Bolton
father of S. Bolton.
We have still a few of the early set
tiers among ua, but year by year the

A more enjoyable evening could not
be deeired than was spent at the Pine
Grove Echool house Friday evening lie-
fore Christmas. Mise Mamie Driver,
teacher of the echool, gave an entertain
ment which furnished amusement for
the audience, numbering about 159, for
four hours, music being furnished bv the
Woodcock orchestra, which made the
time between scenes pass quickly.
The entertainment consisted ot recita
tions, solos and dramas. A solo rendered
by Claud Roberts, "My Father was a
Soldier on the Maine" was very good. .A
hosp drill by eight girls dressed in blue,
carrying each a hoop in pink with a pink
bouquet and bow of ribboD, keeping time
to mueic, was one of the prettiest selec
tions of the evening and was highly ap
plauded. : A song "Merry Christmas
Bells," was well rendered, and many
other selections that gave great credit to
the teacher who trained the scholars
who took part and made it the most
pleasant evening enjoyed in' Wamic for
some time. An admittance of fifteen
cents was charged for the purpose of
getting money to continue the echool.
The receipts were $19. On Monday after
Christmas a dance was ' given by the
district for the same purpose, which was
well attended. Fifty-fonr dollars was
received, making a total of seventy-three
dollars for the district, which will make
Pine Grove school equal to any district
school in Waeco county. U. T.
