DICK'S GOOD TIME.

A portly gentleman sat on the porch
and smiled, while a small boy, also
smiling, painted the front fence.
"Look at that boy," the portly man
remarked to a visitor; "he thinks he is
havirg a good time. A small boy is
surely the drollest creature on earth.
When I was a young-ster I remember
that there were certain kinds of work
I considered play, and one of them was
painting. I was always crazy to paint.
Many times I have taken a bucket of
muddy water and an old paint- brush,
and have spent a whole half day put
ting a thick coat on the side of my fa
ther's barn.
"So with my boy, Dick, the little chap
painting1 the fence; he has always been
crazy to paint. He is enjoying Limself
now you can see he is; and re will
paint that whole fence, too, just as
well as he knows how. I don't care if it
is a tHile smeared; he's getting joy,
solid .joy, thicker than the puint on
his hands and clothes.
"There's a mean side to it, too; he
wanted to paint the fence and I wanted
the weeds pulled out of the yard. So,
like an underhanded rascal. I bar
gained with him; I told him that if he
would pull all the weeds out I would
let him paint the fence. He went
through the other job like a soldier
he hates to pull weed3 all boys do
and now he thinks tifr i-s getting his re
ward. It is a downright shame to fool
him that way don't you think so?"
The portly gentleman chuckled
again, and the small boy, wild with
joy, went on plastering paint- on the
fence. Detroit Free Press. .
Declined with Thanks.
A Chinese editor returned a contri
bution on the ground that if he printed
it the emperor of China would insist,
on everything in the paper beinff main
tained at the same high standard.
That is a more soothing reply to the
contributor thaa "declined with
thanks." Why not put the case thus:
"Sir, your article (or story) is so mag
nificent that if it were toappear in our
pages our readers would clamor
against the rest of the contents. We
are compelled to employ other.writers,
who, if you were a competitor, would
have to retire to the workhouse. In
the cause of charity, therefore, we beg
to express the hope-that you will give
up literature and apply your genius to
the manufacture of marking- ink."

THE CENTIPEDE TURNED UP.
An Awesome Presentiment Drives a
New York Woman from
Arkarsat.
A New York voman, ' who lately
returned from the Arkansas- hot
springs, is excited over what appears
to be a clever bit of foresight cn the
part cf her guardian angel. Some
time ago she went to the springs in
search of relief from rheumatism, and
was convalescing- famously when she
suddenly had a presentiment that she
was to be stung by one cf the centi
pedes that add to the attractis of Ar
kansas resorts. There was no ground
for the conviction that haunted her.
She isn't a nervous or fanciful woman,
and she had never seen a centipede;
but she lived in mortal fear day and
night. The physician said "nerves,"
and the woman reasoned with herself
and proved to herself a hundred times
a day that ehc was in no more danger
frcin centipedes than from tigers, but
all the same she couldn't shake off the
fear.
Everyone in the hotel knew of her
conviction and laughed at it. She
laughed at it herself in a tremulous
way. Finally the anxiety began to tell
apoa her health, and her daughter in
sisted that, while there was no excuse
for the fear, it would be wiser for her
to leave the place. The woman stout
ly' said no. The water was curing her
rheumatism and she wouldn't be driven
away by an absurd fancy, but at last
one night she reached such a state of
fear that she wakened her daughter
and said she was going away by the
midnight train. She sentf or the porter
to take her trunk. When he arrived
she said:
"John, let that trunk alone. I'm an
idiot, and I'm not going to allow my
foolishness to control me. I won't go."
The porter departed and the poor
woman dropped back into her chair,
white as a ghost.
"I've signed my death warrant," she
said.
That was too much for the daughter,
who, being a young woman of some de
termination, sent for the porter once
more, bundled her mother up, called a
carriage, and took the midnight train
for Xew York, carrying a sheepish but
much-relieved mother with her. The
day after they reached here they had
a letter from the proprietor of the
hotel. He wrote that an odd thing had
happened, and that it seemed so
strange that he couldn't resist writ
ing about it. The morning after their
hasty departure, a man went into the
room at nine o'clock and found, lying
just beside the bed, the largest centi
pede that had ever been seen in that
neighborhood. There were screens in
the windows, and no one could offer
any explanation of the creature's pres
ence in the house; but there it was
'ying, just where anyone, in getting
out cf bed, would have put her foot
upon it.
The story isn't a good hotel adver
tisement, but is has made one woman
a firm believer in presentiments. N.
