IContiued from Third Page school, parents and . friends who had gathered to hear the singing and either receive or take enjoyment in witnessing the satisfaction of tbe little ones as they were each given something from the tree. No presents were distributed ex cept to members of the school, none be ing Blighted. Recitations were given and the Binging by the male quartet was particularly good. Perhaps the happiest of all occasions in the city was that held at the Salva tion Army barracks, where were gathered all the needy of the city, of whom the Savior said "inasmuch as ye have dene it unto the least of these ye have done it unto me," therefore it was not surpris ing that all were joyous. The hall was crowded, and every child or grown person was the recipient of some gift, either toy or necessary article of clothing. A well-chosen program, literary and musical, was rendered and a general good time was bad. Another glad time was had when tbe members of the Junior League met at the MethodiBt church Saturday after noon, bringing with them children who it was thought would not bo liable to have any of the Christmas joys of other homes. Each child had previously brought presents intended for these, and were doubly happy in so doing as they joined in Christmas songs. Their super intendent, Miss Randall, had arranged trees, and bags of candy and nuts were given every child. It was a very merry time for all. For a number of years the Catholic people have dispensed with midnight mass, but this year it was resumed again, when a large crowd attended, and the singing was unusually good, while the remainder of the service was appro priate to the occasion. The members of the Methodist Sunday school will hold their jubilee on Friday evening before New Year, the nature of which 18 to be somewhat mvsterious to the children. In contrast to years gone by when at Christmas tree exercises some would be laden down and other little ones fail to receive any recognition, is the custom so general nowadays of making it a point to limit the number of times when one person's name shall be called, and al lowing none to go away without carry ing 6ome gift with them. Then the blessing which is to be received in giv ing is being emphasized more strongly each year as the little ones are taught to remember the needy and thus make the Christmas time one of happiness for all Scliool ?fotes. Miss Nellie Hudson who has been teaching in district No. 25, south of The Dalles, closed a successiul term of school Friday.
