hto the care and skill with which it is
manufactured by scientific processes
i.lcnown to the California Fig Sjtbtjp

the name of the Company a guaranty

CABINET SECRET
fs-Siai7 of State Sberman Tells
Secret Dealings.
HE TRIED TO
PREVENT WAR
Says Negotiations for the Purchase of
Cuba From Spain Were Under Way
When the War Sentiment Arose
and Spoiled All.
Chicago, Dec 29. A special to the
Tribune from Washington says:
'Former Secretary of State Jobn Sher
'nan, in an inverview, tell a an interest
ing cabinet secret, which in the days be
Sore tbe war was frequently suspected,
2mt never establisbed. With considera
ble emotion, he eaid :
"'I tried to prevent this fooli9h war
with Spain. As a matter of fact, nego
vii&tions were in progress to purchase
Cabafrom Spain when the war feeling
suddenly rose and swept everything be
Jore it. And Spain would have accepted
the terms.
"This is a matter of secret history.
And now what have we got to stow for
ad this expense? Some islands in the
Philippines, for instance, which are
wrorth about $200,000 perannumincome ;
increased indebtedness of $200,000 and a
Jot of islands inhabited mainly by man
eaters. And tbe most distressing fea
ture of the affair is that we are now
bout to be called upon to pay $20,000,
O00 for territory that we could have
taken without expending a dollar.
DR WURTH'S OPINION
OF THE NEW DISCOVERY IN MED
ICINE. A Remarkably Successful Remedy for
Dyspepsia, Indigestion and Stom
ach Troubles.
."Sr. Wurth in commenting on recent
discoveries in medicine said : There is
aione which 19 certain to be so valuable
and far reaching in benefit as Stuart's
iDyspepsia tablets, the new stomach rem
dyi I eay far reaching, because
jpeoplelittle realise how important a
sound stomach and vigorona digestion is
o every man, woman and child.
Indigestion is the starting point of
consumption, heart disease, Bright' s
disease, diabetes, nervous prostration,
liver troubles; why is this so? Simply
because every nerve, muscle and tissue
in oar bodies is created and nourished
from the food we eat. If that food is, by
reason of a weak stomach, compelled to
lie for hours, a sour, fermenting mass of
half digested food, it poisons the blood
and nervous system, creates gas which
distends tbe stomach and bowels, caus
ing pressure on the heart, lungs and
other organs, and seriously impeding
their action.
He says further, tbe point to direct at
tention is not the nerves, nor heart, nor
lungs, nor kidneys, but the stomach, the
first cause of all the mischief.
The remedy to use for indigestion and
weak stomachs is not some cathartic,
but a remedy which will digest the food,
increase the flow of gastric juice, absorb
the gases, and Stuart's DyspepsiaTablets
will accomplish exactly this result in
any case of stomach trouble, because
these tablets are composed of the diges
tive acids, aseptic pepsin. Golden Seal
and bismuth, pleasant to taste, and not
being a patent medicine, can be used by
anyone with perfect safety. I believe
Stuart's Dyspepsia Tablets will cure any
form of indigestion and stomach trouble
except cancer of tbe stomach.
Full eiz9 packages of Stuart's Dyspep
sia Tablets are sold by druggists at 50
cents or by mail from F. A. Stuart Co.,
Marshall, Mich. A book on stomach
diseases together with thousands of tes
timonials will be sent by addressing
above, or call on your druggist for them.

Gold in Pike's Peak.
Colorado Springs, Colo., Dec. 19.
A strike of gold in the Strickler tunnel,
btiue driven through Pike's Peak to in
crease the water supply of this ity, has
caused the most intense excitement in
Colorado Springs. A splendid yein
bearing large quantities of sylvanite has
been encountered by the contractor, Geo.
W. Jackson, and samples from the find
assay up into the thousands. Today
pieces of tbe ore were roasted, and
globules of gold were apparent in the
rock.
The find Is of importance to this city,
as the riches will revert to the city of
Colorado Springs.
Experts who have examined the prop
erty say that millions of dollars' worth
of gold are contained in the vein encountered.
SlOO Reward SIOO.
The readers of this paper will be
pleased to learn that there is at least one
dreaded disease that science has been
able to cure in all its stages, and that is
Catarrh. Hall's Catarrh Cure is the
only positive cure known to the medical
fraternity. Catarrh being a constitu
tional disease, requires a constitutional
treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cure is taken
internally, acting directly upon tbe
blood and mucous surfaces of the disease
and giving the patient strength by build
ing up the constitution and assisting
nature in doing its work. The proprie
tors have 83 much faith in its curative
pocrwe, that they offer One Hundred
Do jars for any case that it fails to cure.

How to Look Good.
Good looks are really more than skin
deep, depending entirely on a healthy
condition of all tbe vital organs. If the
liver be inactive, you have a bilious look ;
if your kidneys be effected, you bave a
pinched look. Secure good health and
you will surely have good looks. VElec
tric Bitters" is a good Alternative and
Tonic. Acts directly on the stomach
liver and kidneys. Purifies the blood,
cures pimples, blotches aDd boils, and
gives a good complexion. Every bottle

More Rain in California.
San Francisco, Dec. 20. Another co
pious rain has fallen throughout north
ern and central California. Reports
from all eections of the state show that
for the paBt week damp, foggy weatbei
has prevailed, so that tbe soil has ab
sorbed erery bit of tbe rain that fell last
week. In most of the valleys the eoil is
in splendid condition for seeding, and
where grain was sown early it has
sprouted and is looking well.
In the Sacramento valley the farmers
have ceased worrying over possibilities
of a drouth, and are now confident that
sufficient rain will fall to insure big
crops of grain. The indications are for
a continuance of the rain.
Compliment to Simon.
Washington, Dec. 19. Senator Simon
was complimented by the vice-president
today, being appointed a member of the
special committee on tbe centennial of
the capitol. This will give him a prom
inent place in all proceedings in refer
ence to the ceremonies of the occasion
next year, as the senate and house com
mittees will virtually have entire charge
of the affair.
Senator Wilson will leave tomorrow
for Washington, to remain until after
the senatorial election.
