Next Sunday will be the last that
Elder Bollz will spend as pastor of the
Christian church in this city. On, the
following Friday he will leave for Cen

All arrangements have been made for
the lecture to be given by Captain Lewis
at the Congregational church Wednes

to be "Seven Months in Libby Prison
and Pleasures Thereof." Speaking from
personal experience the captain will
certainly interest his audience, which
no doubt will be an unusually large one
A little girl named Fox, four years old,
was burned to death near Tacoma Sat'
urday. Her parents were away, and
she with a Btill younger brother, bad
been left with a hired man, who when
she was discovered had disappeared. It
is supposed her dress may have caught
from the flames in a stove. Tbe hired
man. named Hanson, was afterwards
found, crazed with grief.
Emil Schanno of the state board of
horticulture, having noticed the para
graph published in the Oregonian a few
days since in regard to a monster apple
displayed by Harry Rosswell, which
weighed 33 ounces, writes to say that
the apple which he sent to the Colum
bian exposition in 1893 'weighed 33
ounces, and measured I6J2 inches in cirr
cnmference. Orchardists should make
a note of this and endeavor to find a few
larger ones next fall. Oregonian.

tb"T)eamlni8terTiiI convention in the
city, or anything of that sort, but that
there is in our midst a clasB of
people who are just chicken hearted
enough to be afraid to tackle any
thing more difficult to obtain than a few
poorly housed fowls, and therefore pay
a visit to their roosts and go away with
the "rooster." Night before last they
invaded the quiet of a hen party on the
hill, and after taking the chickens under
their wings, kindly left a light so that
the owner might eee clearly the loss he
sustained.
Of course we meant all the time to ob
serve Monday as a holiday and were only
waiting for some one like Joe Bonn to
call around and invite as to eay bo, which
he did this morning, and practically ev
ery business man in the town was ready
to close his doors and stay at home
with the children. Besides, those who
have such long stockings tor SantaClaus
to fill could never get them emptied and
at the same time go to church on Sun
day. Therefore, they were more than
willing to take another day to tbe job,
wearing last year's pair on Christmas
day. Americans need have no fear of
getting too many holidays, for there'll
be plenty of time left in which to do the
amount of rushing we seem to deem it
necessary to do. We take too few leisure
hours at any rate, and would do well to
profit more by the example of our Eng
lish cousins, who take life easy
Christmas this year is to be generally
observed by the different Sunday schools,
and preparations are being made by the
officers and teachers to make it the
happiest time of all the year to tbe
children. At the Episcopalian church
Saturday evening a Christmas Festival
will be held, when appropriate exercises
will take place; on the same evening at
the Congregational church a tree
will be in evidence and the general good
time which follows such an exercise be
baa. Also at the unrisuan cnurcn a
tree will be the principal feature of that
evening. On Saturday afternoon Miss
Randall, superintendent of the Junior
League, is to have a tree for the mem
here of tbe League, in the basement of
tbe M. E. church. The exercises for
tbia Sunday school will be held on the
Friday night before New Year's day
Christmas night appropriate exercises
and a tree will be had at tbe Lutheran
church. For several years the "Catholic
church hau failed to hold midnight mass ;
but this year it will be observed as in
former years.
THE LIGHT THAT FAILED.
No Agreement Being Keached Wo Still
Grope Oar Way tn Darkness.
And now it comes to pass - that the
light shineth not in the darknese; bat
that our hopes, which have been centered
on the fifteen arc lights which were soon
to illuminate our city, must be blasted
by the blackness of darkness which en
velopes the streets at night.
But why this etate of affairs when
everything seemed to be settled in re
gard to the matter? Just this, that it
takes two to make a bargain, and until
those two can come to an agreement the
lights will not be forthcoming.
When the council passed the ordinance
over the mayor's veto the latter was
still given the right to make the con
tract with the Electric Light Company,
the members of the council failing to
take into consideration tbe fact that the
authority to take the matter in his own
hands was as good as a veto to tbe
mayor, for certain it was that the com
pany wonld not accede to any contract
which might be drawn np by him, re
gardless of their right ; nor vice yersa.
The company bad agreed to furnish tbe
city with filteen arc lights of 2000 candle
power to be burned all night at an ex
pense of $10.50 each, the contract to be
made for two years. At the same time
it was understood that the lights were
to be placed at any of the twenty posi
tions which the former lighte held, as
Vthe expense of potting them in would
.then be lessened for the company.
I . . - 1 , 1
1 a contract, wuicu naa ueeu presumea
ho the council by the company, was not
accepted. The former then drew up
another contract presenting the eame to
the latter. The second document pro
vided for the placing of . lights at many
places removed from where they former
ly were. After looking over the matter
Mr. French, manager of the company,
saw plainly that hia company could not
without great loss to itself, place the
lights in such positions, the expenee of
extending tbe lines being between $500
and $600. Already they would be com
pelled at about $900 expense to purchase
machinery, not considering other outlay
necessary.
On account of tbe variance in regard
to the matter and lateness of the season
it was decided at a meeting of the direc
tors of the E'ectric Light Company not
to consider further any propositions,
but to let the matter drop for the time.
Therefore the light question rests, and
lor this winter at least, we will remain
in darkness, which is greatly to be re
gretted.
Those whohave'Jooked into the matter
(tbe council included) have come to the
conclusion that the price offered by tbe
company is very ' reasonable, and that
some agreement should have been
reached.
