There is no longer an impression at Madrid that the chief Yankee characteristic is commercialism. Sev eral other points worth considering have been discovered. E""3 If njinnnn (it! II v un n LSI LSI Two Poluted Questions Answered. Timid men are speaking the word 'expansion" in tones of alarm, as if it were cbarged with peril, as if ex pansion were some untried experi ment in our national existence. They forget or ignore the glowing fact that all this nation has of independence and glory and empire it owes to the expansive force of its people. The American is a natural expan sionist and a born colonizer. He is at borne where you place him. Give him a roll of bedding, a little flour, some bacon and coffee, and a box of matches, and you may drop him iu the desert or the wilderness, 100 or 1000 miles from civilization, and he will go whistling about the work of building a campfire and making him self at home. If a farmer, he will scan the country for its agricultural possibilities; if a miner, he will go hunting for "float" and colors; if a railroad man, he will instinctively look around for passes through the mountains and srades . over the prairies. The colonizing spirit is bred in the blood, and you might as well try to break up the natural gait of a bred trotter as to talk of clapping the ex tinguisher on the expansion trait of American character. The American people would not pause at the Al legbenies, nor at the Mississippi, nor at the Rocky mountains, and they will not stop at the shore of the Pacific ocean. It is a waste of time and breath to go asking whether we shall "expand" or "contract." That is something which will nob be settled in news paper offices nor controlled by a few -iiurdred -men gathered beneath the dome of the capitol. The eagle wilj fly, and the barnyard fowl will not, ami there is an end of the matter, Americans will drift across the o'-ean. and home fine morning we fehall ha ye a new possession thrust upon u?, as Dole brought in Hawaii, . and as Dewey took in the Philippines; or as pioneer Americans brought in the Oregon country more than 50 years ago. These great things are not shaped in the white house nor settled in congress. "There is a divinity which shapes our ends, rouh bi-'w ihem as we may." President McKinley's attandnnce at the Atlanta peace j'.iliilec is bear ing good truit. His utterances indi cate the warm brotherly sentiment harbored in the Noth for the South. They proYO to our fdluwcountrymen TjeloSr the obliterated Mason and Dixon line that we have one common cause and one common country to sustain. lie referred in mr.st en thusiastic language to the great ser vice performed during the late war by accomplished efficers, who a gen eration ao, under a misapprehension, derided the Stars and Stripes as much as the3' now revere them. The Atlanta festival is one of those epochs in our history which infiuences the present and future generations to erase fioin their minds ail that may belong to an unpleasant past. The relations between the vai ions sections of this country are fast being more Himty cemente.l than they have been at any time since Washington's first inauguration. The president's op pcrtu; e vi:b to Atlanta will nts rj not only Georgia, but the whole South, of the earnest desire of the North to let the dead past bury its dead, and build upon the site of a to be forgotten civil strife an empire swayed by Republican principles, such as has never been seen on this planet. As there is no difference in the price the pnblic will buy only the better, so that while onr profits may be smaller on a single ecale they will be much greater in the aggregate. How can yon get the pnblic to know your make is the best? If both articles are brought-prominently before the public both are certain to be tried and the public will very quickly pass judgment on them and use only the better one. This explains the large sale on Cham berlain's Cough remedv. The people have been using it for years and have found that it can always be depended upon. They may occasionally take up with eome fashionable novelty pat forth with exaggerated claims, bnt are certain to return to the one remedy that they know to be reliable, and for coughs, colds and croup there is nothing equal to Chamberlain's Cough Remedy.
