WW VOL. XI THE DALLES, OREGON. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 1898 NO 188 BOTH HOUSES ARE REPUBLICAN Next Congress Will Be Ad ministration Congress. TODAY'S RETURNS PROVE THIS Ten Congressional Districts Are Yet in Doubt, But Should They All Go Democratic, the Republicars Would Still Have a Majority of Nine Votes There Will be Not Less Than 183 Republicans in the House. Chicago, Nov. 10. Dispatches to the Associated Press up to 11:12 today from 337 out of 357 congressional districts show the Republicans have elected 183, and the Democrats and Fusionists 184. There are still ten doubtful districts. Washington, Nov. 10. Babcock.of the Republican congressional committee, be lievs this morning that the Republican majority in the next house will reach twenty. At Democratic congressional head quarters they have no figures this morn ing. They did not concede the house, claiming the returns from many districts were yet too meager to definitely deter mine the result. Corruption was charged against the Republican managers by the Democrats. SENATOR THURSTON'S VIEWS. Republican Victory an Indorsement of the Administration. Chicago, Nov. 10. A special to the Times-Herald from Lincoln, Neb., says: On the result of the election United States Senator Thurston says: "The sweeping Republican victory in the West, including Nebraska, means the unconditional indorsement of Presi dent McKinley's administration, the conduct of the war and his foreign policy. The battle was fought on the straight goldstandard platform, and the result, in my judgment, absolutely eliminates free ail rer as a national issue in 1900. "The entire tendency of independent voters ia to return to old party allegiance, with permanent gains to the Republi can party from the best elements of Democracy and Populism. This is large ly due to the prosperous conditions of agriculture and business generally. The people are satisfied with present condi tions. "In Nebraska the F unionists early in the campaign practically abandoned the free-silver issue, and for a time attempt ed to maintain themselves by criticisms of the conduct of the war. Driven from this, they fell back on the McCleary bill. "The Republican campaign was very active and aggressive, and successfully met the three issues in detail. Above everything else, however, was the pa triotic determination to stand by an ad ministration whose victories in war and whose far-reaching and successful for eign policy have won the admiration of Christendom." SWEEPING VICTORY FOR GAGE Republican Candidate for Governor of California Gets 30,000 Majority. San Francisco, Nov. 10. Although complete returns have not been received from all the counties in California, the indications are that the majority of Henry T. (iage, Republican, for govern or, will be nearly 30,000. His associates on the state ticket are all elected, with the possible exception of Curry for sec- retary of state, who ran far behind and may have been beaten by Thompson, Democrat. For justices of the supreme court, Mc Farland, Republican, and Van Dyke, Democrat, are in the lead, and will prob ably win, as the precincts to be beard from are not expected to change the relative position of theoppoBing can didates. Mayor Phelan is re-elected in San Francieco by about 3,000 majority, but with the acception of the assessor and three superior judges aud two supervis ors, the other municipal officers will be Republicans. The next legislature will have a large Republican majority in joint ballot, in suring the election of a Republican to the United States senate. San Feancisco, Nov. 10. With 756 precincts to hear from, Gage, the Repub lican candidates for governor, leads Ma guire, the Democratic candidate, by 23, 826. The Republicans have surely elected all the rest of the etate ticket except secretary of state and justice of the supreme court. The congressional ticket will probably stand six Republi cans and one Democrat. The Republi cans have a clear majority of forty-three joint ballot in the legislature. A Republican Legislature. Paekebsbubg, W. Va., Nov. 10. White, secretary of the Republican state committee, says: "The West Virginia legislature is Republican in both branch es, tbe senate by ten, the house by three." Fusionists Get Governor. Omaha, Nov. 10. Chairman Schneider of the Republican state committee, con cedes the election of Poynter, Fusion, for governor by 1000. The balance of the ticket resulted in about the same proposition. The Republicans will have a majority of four on joint ballot. HEART DISEASE SOME FACTS REGARDING THE RAPID INCREASE OF HEART TROUBLES. Do Not Be Alarmed, But Look For the Cause. Heart troubles, at least among Amer- cans, are certainly increasing and while this may be largely due to the excite ment and worry of American business life, it it more often the result of weak stomachs, of poor digestion. Real, organic heart disease is incura ble; but not one case in a hundred of heart trouble is organic. The close relation between heart trouble and poor digestion is because both organs are controled by branches of the same great nerves, the Sympathetic and Pneumocastric. In another way, also the heart is af fected by that form of digestion, which causes gas and fermentation from half di gested food ; there is a feeling of heavi ness and oppression in the chest caused by pressure of the distended stomach on the heart and lungs, interfering with their action; hence arises palpitation and short breath. Poor digestion also poisons the blood ; makes it thin and watery, which irri tates and weakens the heart. The most sensible treatment for heait trouble is to improve tbe digestion and to insure a prompt assimilation of food. This can best be done by the regular use after meals of some safe, pleasant and effective digestive preparation, like Stuart's Dyspepsia Tablets, which may be found at most drug stores and which contain valuable, harmless digestive elements in a pleasant.convenient form It is safe to say that the regular, per sistent nse of Stuart's Dyspepsia Tablete at meal time will cure any form of stom ach trouble except cancer of ' the stom ach. Full sized package of the tablets sold by druggists at 50 cents. Little book on stomach troubles mailed free. Address Stnart Co. Maiftal, Michigan. FOUR OF THE BLACKS KILLED Battle Was Precipitated By the De struction of the Plant of Newspa per Run by a Negro, and in Which Had Been Published an Article Derogatory -to the White Women of Wilmington. Wilmington-, N. C, Nov. 10. Events have moved quickly in Wilmington. This morning tbe white , people made good their threats to take vengeance on the negro newspaper which published an editorial derogatory to the white women. .At 7:30 o'clock the negroes not having responded to the demand for the removal of the press of tbe Record, tbe negro newspaper, Fix-Representative Waddell, chairman of the white commit tee of twenty-five, repaired to the light infantry armory, where he was to meet the citizens by appointment. Eight o'clock was the last hour of grace for the negroes to reply, and that hour passed without an answer of any kind being re ceived. Meantime armed men had begun to gather in the street in front ot the armo ry. They carried rifles, shotguns and ammunition, and the assemblage in cluded some of the most BOlid citizens of the town. At 8 o'clock tbe procession moved in the direction of the Record printing office. When the negro quar terwas reached the negroes could be seen a few blocks away running into their houses. When the crowd arrived in front of the Record office, the citizens surged into the place and commenced the work of destruction. Furniture was smashed and thrown into the street, floors were gutted of moveables, and the building was fired and destroyed. Some one tnrned in a fire alarm, and when the engine responded the crowd discharged their weapons, and a fuBilade of gun and pistol shots and shouts filled the air. The affair was soon over, how ever, and no one was hurt. The pub lishing house was destroyed, but neigh boring property was saved. Manley.bis brother and associate, fled and could not be found by the citizens. Last night was one of terror. There were disturbances in different sections of the city, and the streets were patrolled during the-hours of darkness by armed whites. In one instance a number of negroes fired on a street car, but with out injuring any one. Mobs of excited negroes gathered at various places and were only dispersed after argument. The police were not in evidence, and made no effort to assist in restoring or der. Soon after 11 o'clock news came that reinforcements were needed in the negro section of Brooklyn. The men were sent. Twenty minutes later news came that there had been a collision be tween the whites and blacks, and that blood had been shed. As a result of the trouble at Brooklyn, it is believed that the negroes who have been killed will number four. A white man named Mayo, who was shot in the stomach, has since.died. Another white man was hurt. The situation is quiet at the ecene of the trouble now. The ne groes have gone into their houses. Squads of men are halting all negroes and tak icg their pistols from tbem. The demonstration this morning re sulted from tbe action ot a mass meet ing of white citizens yesterday called to "assert the ' supremacy of the white men." THE TERESA DID NOT RUN ASHORE Views of the Captain of the Steamer Saginaw in Regard to the Re port of the Loss of the Vessel. Boston, Nov. 10. If the Spanish crui ser Maria Teresa is on Cat island, Ba hamas, there was little indication of it when Captain Garvin, of the steamer Saginaw, passed there on November 4, three days after she was abandoned. The Saginaw sailed from Port de Pals, Hayti, on November 3d, and passed within thirty miles of Cat island the next day. Captain Garvin said that when off the island he encountered a fleet of wreckers, or sponge fishermen, who are constantly on the lookout for wrecks, especially after such a gale as swept over the Bahams during the first of the week. If the Toresa was ashore on the island at that time, every one of those daring fishermen would have flocked around her within a few hours after she had grounded, and would not have gone hunting about the ocean with such a prize so close at hand.
