One will now be sent to the orphans' borne, while the other will be taken in charge by kind friends. - At a meeting of the members of the Christian church last night after service, the work of the paetor, Rev. Boltz. was highly commended, and there is little doubt that he will be retained another year. During his ten-months' pastorate here &ie church has been built up won derfully, seventy-eight accessions being made to the membership, and an inter est being awakened which will tell in the future welfare of the society. He is not only a good worker, but an eloquent speaker. Our library is steadily increasing its list of books, 130 volumes being received yesterday, and 200 more are expected in a few days. Nothing which has been started in our city for many years has given such satisfaction in literary circles as the library. Its books are the latest and very best to be procured being chosen by a committee well fitted to make selections. Those who do not im prove the opportunity to get such good readiug for so small a sum as twenty-five cents a month are missing,' much The steamer Sarah Dixon left this ci t II Sin t fi rA a xr n irrYi uKj-t,t Q n A made a through trip to Portland paesing through the locks at 3 o'clock, when the moonlight made it almost as light as day. At 2:30 the Dalles City came through on its way to Lyle, where 3000 sacks of wheat were loaded and the steamer returned to Portland. The Dixon arrived at The Dalles about 8 o'clock last night. The amount of freight carried by this line during the past few months has been immense, compelling them to make extra trips. As soon as the rush caused by the shipment of Sheat is over the steamers will leave the"cityat an earlier hour. A very sad and fatal accident occurred at Caecades Saturday. Mrs J. J. Gib bons and her eon were driving into town in a cart when the boy stopped to pick up a horse shoe in the road. The horse which they were driving became frightened and ran away, throwing Mrs. Gibbons out and breaking ber neck. A horseman who saw the runaway team endeavored to catch up and stop them, but failed to do so, overtaking them only in time to raise the lifeless form of the unfortunate woman from the road where she had been thrown. The husband of the deceased was formerly employed in the shops at this place, where she has a number of friends. Everybody reads Thk Chronicle. well tail $6.00 $8.00 $10.00 $12.50 $15.00 $18.00 $20.00 9 ONLY AIR AND NOTHING MORE "Air Ship" Fell Flat, Bat Not Flatter ing; Shall We Rave Good Shows? The Air ship company, which was all that the name implies, very airy, suc ceeded in disgusting n unusually large audience Saturday night, and making them wish an air ship would transport them to any old place but where they were. People who, after reading thje flattering notices given by theOregoniao, and foolishly copied by the papers here, went to the opera house expecting to see a passably good piay, were com pelled to listen to what -would not pe riety show. There was not a plot to thi play, not a singer, an actor, a dancer, noreven a pretty feirl on the stage, the only redeeming feature being the beauti ful scenery, and the tableau between the second and third acts. The play consisted of well, we'll give it up, un less it was a conglomeration of skirts, which were built bo as to display homely forms. No blame can be attached to the man ager of the opera house, who did all in his power to find out the true status of the company. It seems a good deal of money must have been put up in Port land as every report has been flattering. However, if such playa were the only ones brought to the city it would be no more than could be expected, for some how it seems they are the style most Appreciated. When euch singers as Yaw, such actors as Ward, or even as the Noble company, which need no-recommendation trom any one, appear in our .city, about a dozen gather at the opera house to greet them, while the rest of the theatre-going public have as an ex cuse for their absence that they were 'so filked' when Si Perkins and the Air Ship company were here," that they were "afraid to attend." The next week when eome snide minstrel or third-class 'Uncle Tom's Cabin" show pastes up ts glaring, heart-rendering bills, a rush s made for seats and the opera house will hardly contain the crowd. J What incentive is there for a manager to endeaver to get good companies to visit our city? None. I Fulcon-Ilurlbnt Wedding;. The marriage of Mr. J. Frank Fulton and Miss Lillian Hurlbut occurred yes terday afternoon in the Vogt block, Rev. J. H.. Wood conducting the ceremony. Stabling and Miss Anna Stubling, of this city. The groom is a member of a family well known in Oregon and is highly respected. The singing was exceptionally good, (which means much) two anthems being rend ered by the choir and a solo "Over the Stars There is Rest" was sung by Mr. Arvine Phelps, who several years ago was wont to delight Dalles people by the sweetness of his voice. - Itev. i'oling gave a short address, tak ing as his text the words of the Lord to Elijah, "What doest thou here?" The speaker in enlarging on the theme said the text implies purpose, which must be the foundation of every successful life. Character is purpose focalized Achieve ment is the fruits of a well founded pur pose.
