He was constant in his devotion, however, and that made matters worse. She had tried gentle means to g-ei rid of him, but he had disregarded them with painful persistency. In this moment of her desperation be felt it incumbent upon him to pro pose to her as men under similar cir lumstances so often, do. "Which they wouldn't if they had any sense at all. "Dear .one," he exclaimed, hurling himself tragically at her feet, "I love you. My life is yours. ' Will you take it?" She did not look like a murderess. "Mr. Sing-Ieton," she responded, with calm determination, "I will." He gazed at her rapturously. "Don't do that," she begged, draw ing back, from him as if in horror. "I have taken yourlife,- as you requested me to do, and you are henceforth to all intents and purposes dead." He seemed dazed. "I do not, Mr. Singleton," she con tinued, turning aside, "desire to have a dead person in the house, and if you do hot go away at once I shall ring for an ambulance and have you removed to the morgue." Then' the dreadful situation in which his own precipitate .folly had placed him was revealed, and he removed him self with promptness and dispatch. - ACRES OF PINK POND LILIES. Floral Display That Delights Con necticut Railway Travelers. No one knows how long this remark able garden of pond lilies has been in existence, but for many years Tad pole's lilies have been sought by picnic parties from near-by couuties in this state, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Cartloads of the flowers are carried away, but there seems to be no diminu tion in the supply. The railroad comes suddenly aoc-ri the (pond, which it divides in halves, anc in an instant the passengers detect tse fragrance of the lilies and throw Taj., the windows, the better to view in beautiful and unusual sight. In one section of Tadpole there is a large tract of lilies the blossoms of which ere oi so rich a "pink as tobe almost rose colored, it is said. They are of exceed ingly rare beauty and are much sought after by collectors. Tadpole's un romantic name comet from its being a favorite place foi young frogs.
