I TEE EXCELLENCE OF SYRUP OF FIGS is due not only to the originality and simplicity of the combination, but also to the care and skill with which it is manufactured by scientific processes known to the California Fig Syrup Co. only, and we wish to impress upon all the importance of purchasing the true and original remedy. As the genuine Syrup of Figs is manufactured by the California Fig Syrup Co. only, a knowledge of that fact will assist one in avoiding1 the worthless imitations manufactured by other pa ties. The high standing- of the Cali fornia Fjo Sykup Co. with the medi cal profession, and the satisfaction which the g-enuine Syrup of Figs has given to millions of families, make3 the name of the Company a guaranty of the excellence of its remedy. It is far in advance of all other laxatives, as it acts on the kidneys, liver and bowels without irritating or weaken ing them, and it does not gripe nor nauseate. In order to get its beneficial effects, please remember the name of the Company CALIFORNIA FIG SYRUP CO. SAN FEIAXCISCO. Cr.L tOOsriLI.E. Kjr. NEW TORS, N.Y. PKB8UAL MENTION. A. J. A Tribute to the Memory of One Who Died as Heroes Die. Poor Willie Field ! Few deaths, if any, in recent years have appealed with Bach eadnees to the people of The Dalles, as baa the sudden termination of the bright young life ol Willie Field. 1171. . . .1 iV . , W rien me i gj iu war uemij must De id is often the inevitable looked for at thing, but roung Field gave his life. purely and imply, for others. As nurse of his sick companions in the hospital he inhaled the fatal fever and )ut a few dayk had passed till the bright- faced, happy-hearted boy, was tenderly laid at rest farfrom family and friends. Mo hero could have died a nobler death. Had Hobson when he went with the Merrimac between the UJazing gnna of the Spaniarda met the fate that seemed almost certain to be awaiting him, the country would have mourned the passing of a heart brave as few ever were. Yet young Field's death is none the less heroic. He did not have the mad hileration of battle to sustain him nor was bis courage borne up by the sight of comrades facing the same danger and Btriving to do the same deeds. But actuated by the spirit of unselfishness, without which no man is really a hero, he took his place in tha pestilential hospital and made some poor suffering fellow easier by hia sacrifice, and when the roll of bravery is completed high up among the names will be found that of The Dalles boy Willie Field. It eeems but a few weeks ago that those who attended the foot-ball game at the fair grounds saw him, a leader in the sport, and many; who watched him spoke of bis manly bearing, little think ing that they were feeing the qualities exhibited them which should gio to greater development and culminate in the self sacrifice at! Manila It makes little Difference where his crave lies. The sk ies are aB blue in the Philippines as theyare in Oregon ; the spreading palm trees will cast their shadows over him as would the waving pine trees at home. He died as a hero dies and no better nor Etronger epitaph could be given him. The fl ig he fought for and loved salutes him in the morn ing and bids him "Good Bye" at night and all is well with Willie Field. "On Fame's eternal csmping grounds Their silent tents are spread V hile glory guards with Eolenin round The bivouac of the dead." BUSINESS LOCALS.
