THE EXCELENCE CF SYRUP GF FIGS
is due not only to the originality and
simplicity of the combination, bat also
4o the care and skill with which it is
manufactured by scientific processes
known to the California Fia Syrup
Co. only, and we wish to impress upon
11 the importance of purchasing the
true and original remedy. As -the
genuine Syrup of Figs is manufactured
iy the California Fig Syrup Co.
only, a knowledge of that fact will
assist one in avoiding the worthless
imitations manufactured by other pa
ties. The high standing- of the Caii
Tornia Fro Sykup Co. with the medi
cal profession, and the satisfaction
which the genuine Syrup of Figs has
given to millions of families, makes
the name of the Company a guaranty
of the excellence of its remedy. It is
far ia advance of all other laxatives,
a.s it acts on the kidneys, liver and
bowels without irritating or weaken
ing them, and it does not gripe nor
nauseate. In order to get its beneficial
effects, please remember the name of

Tiibute to Andrew Canfield.
Contributed.
Mr. Andrew Canfield died at his home
on Summit Ridge, at 10 o'clock Wednes
day evening, Oct. 5, 1898, from a malady
of several years standing that terminated
.in three weeks ot intense suffering.
Mr. Canfield was a native of Canada,
where he first saw the light of day, Sept
24, 1825. lie liyed in Iowa, being among
the pioneers of that state. His father
was one of the first to settle Jackson
county. He was in the mercantile busi
' xiess a great nuinbar of years, spending
a portion of his time among the rich
gold hills of California. He settled at
Summit Ridge in 1883, where he re
mained to the time of his death. "Uncle
Andy," as he was familiarly known for
miles around, was one of whom too
much praise couid not be said, for to
know him was to love him. : He was a
member of the Congregational church,
Rev. D. V. Poling, of that church hav
ing performed the last sad rites that left
his time-worn body on the quiet hillside
of the I. O. O. F. cemetery at Dufur.
Deceased left a wife to mourn his ab
sence, but was met in that bright spirit
world by two lovely children, who were
taken in early childhood. We miss him
but would not wish him back, bowing
in resignation, knowing hat "thou God
knowest best."
Three Hen Poisoned by Canned Fish'
On Saturday evening last J. I. Jonee,
Charles Young and Walter Furrow,
members of a Rainier lodge of the
Knights of Pythias, feasted on a lunch of
canned shrimps, clams and lobsters just
prior to attending a lodge meeting.
Jones and Furrow live near Rainier,
and Young lived alone in a cabin about
eighteen miles from the town. On Mon
day morning the trio were quite Eicfe,
constantly growing worse until Tuesday
noon, when Jones died. That morning
Furrow's friends took him to St. Vincent
hospital, where he died yesterday.
The news of Jones' death aroused the
friends of the surviving men, but at that
time Young also was past relief. lie
was found dead lying across Lis beil,
without a person near him when called
hence.
Dr. Cliff, of St. Helens, and two Port
land physicians made a post mortem ex
amination, finding the men to have
died from ptomaine poisoning.

"Tell me, doctor," asked the ambi

"what was the most dangerous case yofc

I am about to retire from practice,"
answered the veteran physician, frank

Three Doctors . In Consultation.
From Benjimin Franklin.
"When you are sick, what you like
best is to be chosen for a medicine in the
first place; what experience tells you is
best, to be chosen in the second place;
what reason (i. e.. Theory says is best
is to b3 chosen in the last place. But if
you can get Dr. Inclination, Dr. Ex
perience and Dr. Reason to hold a con
sultation' together, they will give you
the best advice that can be taken."
When you have a bad cold Dr. Incli
nation would recommend Chamberlain's
Cough Remedy because it is pleasant
and safe to take. Dr. Experience would
recommend it because it neyer fails to
effect a speedy and permanent cure.
Dr. Reason would recommend it because
it is prepared on scientific principles,
and acts on nature's plan in relieving
the lungs, opening the secretions and
restoring the system to a natural and
healthy condition. For sale by Blakeley
