GENERAL BACON'S RECORD. .He Served With Distinction in the Civil Var Was at Vancouver. 'General John M. Bacon, who com manded the troops in the Indian fight at Walker, Minnesota, Wednesday was for rnerly stationed at Vancouver. He was inspector-general of the department of the Columbia for something over two years, leaving there three years ago. tie owns a large prune ranch near Vancou ver now, and some other property in the neighborhood. He has been stationed as commander of the department of Da kota for several years, and he was made Imgadier-general eince the opening of the war with Spain. General Bacon is 52 years of age. He was born in Ken tacky, and has been connected with the army since his youth, when he served with distinction in the civil war. He baa a wife and several children. Gen eral Bacon entered the Union army as second lieutenant of the Eleventh Ken tucky cavalry, September 22, 1862, and was mastered out as a major August 21, 1865, being then only nineteen years old. Ia June 1864, while a captain, he commanded a .detachment of his regi ment (the 4th Kentucky Cavalry) which, writh details from the 5th and 6th Ken tacky Cavalry numbering in all 500 men repulsed, with heavy loss to the enemy, a force of 3500 men under General Pillow at Lafayette, Georgia. Ia October following he, with a detail of three officers and twenty-seven men darted into Dalton, Georgia, around which town General Hood's . army was ocainped and captured and brought back to Eesaca thirty-one prisoners without losing a man. He was appointed captain in the Nititb cavalry July 28, 1866; major of the Seventh cavalry April 14, 1884; lieu tenant-colonel of the First cavalry April 7, 1833, and colonel of the Eighth cavalry in 1897. 'While a caotain he was detailed in Jancarv 1871. as a personal aid, with the rank of colonel on the staff of Gen fcjuet-oisn ,the commander of the IT. S army,nd served as such aide for 13 years on til the retirement of Gen. A patent was granted February IS, 1830, for a diving apparatus called the submarine explorer, to Sewall Short and Noah Bradford, of Barnstable. The description of the invention was as fol lows: This d'iving apparatus! consists of a hollow bucy which floats in the water, and is in form like an inverted bell. Both ends of this buoy, or bell, are open. It must be made of light materials and covered with leather or other sub stance, so as to render it impervious to water. There is a platform, or seat, around it on the inside, to accommodate the assistants. To the lower end of the buoy is attached a flexible water-tight tube, which may be two feet in diame ter, and must extend nearly to the bot tom of the water. The tube is distended by strong iron rings and sunk by means of weights; its lower part terminates in a water tight dress, fitting the legs and arms, and kept distended like the main tube, by suitable rings; light is admitted through openings occupied uy mtolk panes of glass. The whole apparatus thus forms a bus- open at top, but closed below. It is to be moored in a secure way, and to be of sufficient length to allow it to rise and fall with the motion of the water, without, ais- turbing the operator. A windlass is provided, which crosses the floating buoy, and is necessary to draw the diver up when necessary; an air tube to force air down and a hy draulic tube to pump any water up which may accidentally enter, are also appended. .
