THE EXCELLENCE OF SYRUP OF FIGS
is due not only to the originality and
simplicity of the combination, but also
to the care and skill with which it is
' manufactured by scientific processes
known to the California Fig Syrup
Co. only, and we wish to impress upon
all the importance of purchasing the
true and original remedy. As the
genuine Syrup of Figs is manufactured
by the California Fig Strttp Co.
only, a knowledge of that fact will
assist one in avoiding the worthless
imitations manufactured by other pa
ties. The high standing of the Cali
fornia Fjo Stkup Co. with the medi
cal profession, and the satisfaction
which the genuine Syrup of Figs has
given to millions of families, makes
the name of the Company a guaranty
of the excellence of its remedy. It is
far in advance of all other laxatives,
as it acts on the kidneys, liver and
bowels without irritating or weaken
ing them, and it does not gripe nor
nauseate. In order to get its beneficial
effects, please remember the name of
the Company

A CRITICAL TIME
During the Battle at
Santiago.
SICK OR WELL, A RUSH
NIGHT AND DAT
The Packers at the Battle nf Santiago de
Cuba Were all Heroes Their Heroic
Kfforts In Getting: Ammunition and
Rations to the Front Saved the Day.
P. E. Butler, of pack-train No. 3,
writing from Sandiago, De Cuba, on
July 23d, says : "We all bad diarrhoea
in more or less violent form, and when
we landed we bad no time to see a
doctor, for it was a case of rush and rush
night and day to keep the troops sup
plied with ammunition and rations, but
thanks to Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera
and Diarrhoea Remedy, we were able to
keep ut work and keep our health ; in
fact, I sincerely believe that at one
critical time this medicine was tbe in
direct saviour of our army, for if tbe
packers had been unable to work there
would have been no way of getting sup
plies to the front. There were no roads
that a wagon train could use. My com
rad and myself had tbe good fortune to
lay in a supply of this medicine for out
pack-train before we left Tampa, and I
know in four cases it absolutely saved
life."
The above letter was written to the
manufacturers of this medicide, tbe
Chamberlain Medicine Co., Des Moines,
Iowa. For sale by Blakeley and Hough
ton. Notice to Delinquent Taxpayers.
The delinqent taxes of Wasco county,
as shown on the rolls now in the bands
of the sheriff are $60,000, an amount al
most equal to the indebtedness of tbe
county. Every citizen will doubtless"
admit that this state of affairs should
not exist, and that all taxes should be
collected. On account of hard times
in the past the county court Las shown
leniency to taxpayers, but that leniency
has reached the limit, and the court
cannot wait longer on delinquents to
make settlements. For this reason a
warrant has been attached to each de
linquent roll commanding the sheriff to
collect all taxes by seizure and sale of
property. With a bountiful crop now
in sight, there can no longer be any rea
sonable excuse for tbe non-payment of
taxes. The sheriff is bound by oath to
comply with the terms of the warrants
attached to tbe tax rolls for the collec
tion thereof, and has no option in the
matter. Delinquent taxpayers can save
the cost of seizure and sale of property
by settling their taxes at once.
Robert Kelly,
Sheriff and Tax Collector for Wasco
County.

AT THE " '
Methodist Church, Sept. 22, at 7:30 p.m.
This continues to be one of the most noted lectures 'ot the day. It is alwavs
given in the interests of the church, and has cade for it more than $150,000.
The price of this lecture in all Eastern eit't?a is $1.00, but we have reduced the

those of neighboring towns and counties.
Bishop McCabe sees a bright side in evory thing. This lecture is instructive,
entertaining and inspiring. It was Chaplain McCabe thattore up his ehirt to make
a flag with which to celebrate the 4th of July in Liliby Prison. His singing has
