THE AWFUL
CRIME OF A
HUMAN FIEND
Killed a Man and Wounded
a Woman.
HE CHASED A GIRL
Was Crazen by the Effects of Hard
Drinking Officers Who Have Him
in Charge Fear a Lynching.
Pkkdletox, Sept. 17. C. C. Cunning
ham, of Milton, at the O. it. & N. depot
this evening at 8 o'clock shot and killed
O. Young, shot Mrs. Julius J. Worcester
and chased her daughter, Effie, a block,
with a cocked pistol in his hand. She
refuge in the first open place the First
Chance saloon. Cunningham followed
ber. Several men grasped him, and,
after a struggle succeeded in securing
bim. No motive is to be assigned as yet
but the case is developing interesting
features. Mr. Worcester was examinod
by the best physicians. Dr. Smith, who
is mayor of the city, says a cursory ex
amination shows a wound in the back,
the ball entering near the kidneys. She
is now in an extremely dangerous con
dition. Cunningham is belieyed to be insane.
He said be couldn't understand how he
came to commit the terrible crime. He
had apparently been drinking. He was
assaulted at Milton a few days ago, and
came to Pendleton to secure the further
prosecution of his assailant.
HER LAST
RESTING PLACE
Funeral of the Murdered Empress of
Austria.
Vienna, Sept. 17. Emperor Francis
Joseph this morning received the special
representatives of the foreign sovereigns
An hour later he received the visiting
sovereigns, with the exception of the
king of Saxony,
The emperor, Prince Hohenlohe, the
German imperial chancellor, and Baron
von Buelow, received Emperor William
at the railroad station. The emperors
shook hands and kissed each other's
cheeks three times. They then pro
ceeded to the church where Emperor
William, in behalf of himself and the
empress of Germany, deposited on the
casket containing the remains of the late
empresB a floral wreath which his
majesty had brought from Germany
The emperor dined at the German em
bassy After the funeral, and f tarted for
Berlin this evening.
Great torches threw glaring flames
over the royal chapel in which the re
mains of the late empress have lain in
state since yesterday morning. The
doors of the chapel were closed at noon,
thus barring thousands of people who
were anxious to see the casket.
At 4 o'clock tolling of bells announced
the starting of the procession. The
route from Hofburg to the insignificant
church of Capuchins, whose vaults en
tomb the Hapsburgs, is so short that
only a small proportion of the populace
was able to crowd into the adjoining
streets. A detachment of cavalry led
the procession. Then came carriages
drawn by eix horses, covered with
funeral trapmngp, escorted by footmen
A train of servants followed, and then
came footguards and a squadron of horse
guards, followed by a detachment of
yeomen, gorgeously uniformed, preced
ing the funeral car. Following .the car
were several bodies of infantry and cav
airy.
A large number of priests, met the
procession at Augustus church and pro
ceeded with it to Capuchins. The clergy
united in atoning prayers, which were
also exquisitely chanted during the
services by the court choir.
During the last prayer, the coffin was
ifted from the catafalque and clergy
bearing torches walked before it. Em
peror Francis Jo3epL, attended by the
highest officers of state bearing wands,
followed. The procession slowly passed
from the sight of the congregation down
the stone stariwav to the vault.
THE KAISER'S
PILGRIMAGE
Abdul Hamid Prepares for Emperor
William's Visit.
Berlin. Sept. 17. The approaching
visit of Enperor Willani to rurky is
now arousing considerable interest.' The
sultan is making extraordinary efforts to
please the emperor during the latter's
stay at Constantinople. The palace in
teded for his reception is being fitted up
with laxury. Emperor Willam will stay
about 12 days at Constantinople.
The Turkish troops it is asserted, are
somewhat dissatisfied on the subject, as
their arrears of pay have been devoted
to the expense of Emperor William's
isit.
The preparations at Jerusalem for the
visit of Emperor William are in full
swing. Streets are being cut through the
city, and the regular mountains of rub
bish in the bazaar quater have been re
moved. The garrison has been especily
active in drilling, in order to impress
the emperor, though many of the sol
diers are baefooted and wear no uni
forms. These soldiers, however, are to
receive new uniforms for the festivities
organized in honor of the visit of Em
peror William to the Holy Land.
Deafness Cannot DecCared
by local applications, as they cannot
reach the diseased portion of the ear.
There is only one way to cure deafness,
and that is by constitutional remedies.
Deafness is caused by an inflamed con
dition of the mucous lining of the Eus
tachian Tube. When this tube is in
flamed you have a rumbling sound or
imperfect hearing, and when it is en
tirely closed, Deafness is the result, and
unless the inflammation can be taken
out and this tube restored to its normal
condition, hearing will be destroyed for
ever; nine cases out of ten are caused
by catarrh, which is nothing but an in
flamed condition of the mucous sur
faces.
We will give One Hundred Dollars for
any case of Deafness (caused by catarrh)
that cannot be cured by nail's uatarrn

Chtcagjo Wool Notes.
No concessions are being made in wool
values by merchants here. Several rep
resentatives of large wool corporations
were examining stocks of wool during
the week. A line of fine and half-blood
staple was disposed of, terms P. T. If
holders of wool had been willing to
make slight concessions, some large
blocks of the staple could have been
easily moved, but merchants who have
canvassed the situation carefully do not
feel like meeting buyers' views at this
time. They cannot offer this year's clip
at prices that old wools have been sold
at, in Eastern markets recently ; so the
blockade between dealer and merchant
still continues. Holders at local points
are still firm in their views, which
places wool held in the several markets
in a strong position, for no wools sold
at today's quotations can be replaced.
A strong feature in the present con
dition of wool, is the cold wave that has
become general throughout the country,
causing a change from light to heavier
wearing apparel. This factor will cer
tainly increase the demand for goods
and will no doubt assist in bringing to
gether manufacturer and merchant.
When the change for the better cornea,
it will materialize quickly, and the di
lemma in which the wool trade finds
itself today will be overcome by a healthy
demand for raw material.
The London auction sales, which open
on the 20th inst., where about 8,000,000
to 10,000,000 pounds of wool will be
offered, is looked forward to as the turn
ing point in values tor the prediction of
an advance in prices at the coming
series is general abroad, where great
strength in prices still predominate.
