CROPS AND WEATHER.
Weather lialletln for Eastern Oregon
lall Wheat Heine Sown. Fruit and
vegetables KipeBiDK T'ast.
The mean temperature for the week
averaged 71. which was 11 higher than
for the preceding week and 10 higher
than for the corresponding week of lust
year. The maximum temperature for
the week was 90, which occured on
Friday and Saturday, and the minimum
was 40, wfTich occuied on Tuesday and
Weduesday mornings. No rain fell
during the week. Over the Plateau
Region, in the more exposed places,
frost occured on several mornings.
A correspondent at Hood River, Wasco
County, reports: ''The warm, dry
weather is repenina; corn and pptatoes;
some corn is already ripe end ready to
be taken to the mill. Watermelons arid
squashes ara plentiful. Grapes are
plentiful and eorne vaiieties are ripe.
Small areas of wheat and oats have
been sown in the dust. Clover and
timothy fields make good pasture. The
fruit crops cf all kinds are immense."
Prom Athena, Umatilla County, comes
this report: "Harvesting and threshing
about done; most of the machinery has
been housed. The grain yield has been
heavy; very little damage was done by
the hot weather to the spring grain
crop. Potatoes are being dug; they
yield fairly we'll. Pastures are becom
ing dry."
Throughout the Columbia River Val
ley, harvesting and threshing are about
over and the crews are moving or have'
gone to other sections. Throughout
Union, Wallowa, Baker and interior
counties, harvesting and threshing con
tinue with good results. Prunes and
plums are very large crops. Peaches
and grapes are maturing. Apples and
pears are plentiful.
The hay crop throughout the stock
country is being put away for winter
use. The hay crop, on irrigated land,
is excellent, but en other land i3 not
very good. Frosts on the higher places
did do injury except to nip tender

Chaplain C. C. tneCabe,
BISHOP IN THE M. E. CHURCH,
In answer to an urgent call by the church in
this city, will deliver his famous lecture on the
iW Side of Life
AT THE
Methodist Church, Sept. 22, at 7:30 p.m.
This continues to be one of the most noted lectures of the day. It is always
given in the interests of the church, and has made for it more than $150,000.
The price of this lectnre in all Eastern cities is $1.00, but we have reduced the
price to 50 cents, to give all an opportunity to hear it, especially accomodating
those of neighboring towns and counties.
Bishop McCabe sees a bright side in every thing. This lecture is instructive,
entertaining and inspiring. It was Chaplain McCabe thattore up his shirt to make
a flag with which to celebrate the 4th of July in Li bby Prison. Hia eiDfring has
inspired many a soul to deeds of heriosm and many a fainting heart to renewed
courage.
