The death rate in the United States army, regulars and volunteers, for the four months of service, is 5.4 in a thousand. This is on a basis of 240, 000 men in the field, representing an annual death rate of 1 C.2. Averag ing the length of service at three months, so s to include the second enlistments in June, the death rate per month is 1.8 per thousand, or an an nual death rate of 21.6 per thousand from disease. Add 500 deaths by wounds, and the annual death rate, counting the term of service at three months, would be 30 in a thousand, or, on the basis of four months' ser vice, 22.5 per thousand, including all deaths from wounds and disease. The average annual death rate in the British army during the peninsu lar war was 113 per thousand from disease and 52 per thousand by wounds received in action. The average annual death rate in the Brit ish army from 1803 to 1812 was 71 per thousand from disease and 9 by wounds in action. In July, August and September, 1854, the British army in the Crimea lost at the rate of 293 men per thousand per annum ; in October, November and Decem ber the loss was at the annual rate of 511 to every thousand, 443 of which were by disease. During the first three months of 1855 the death rate was so high that if it had continued the annual death rate would have been 912 out of eyery thousand and 98 per cent of it from disease. Dur ing the entire campaign of two and one half years the annual death rate was 232 per thousand, of which 202 were from disease and 30 by wounds received in action. In the army of the United States in the first year of the civil war the annual death rate was 53 per thou sand per annum (24 per thousand by disease). On the 30th of June, 1863, there were in the hospitals of the Union army 135 men in every thou sand. In 1861, the mortality among the home trocps Df Great Britain was 91 per thousand and among the troops abroad 100 per thousand. This was in time of peace. In the general reports on vital statistics published by the govern ment the annual death rate in Chicago is given at 20.2; Havana, 45.7; Lon don, 21,2 ; Boston, 23.5; St. Peters burg, 51.4. These figures are all from official sources. Tbey show that in the first four months of war with unseasoned soldiers in the field, and with two extremely arduous cam paigns in progress the death rate of the army is less than in Chicago or London or Boston, and not one half as large as that in St. Petersburg or Havana. Inter-Ocean. According to Dr. Senn's theory, every great hospital in the country is a sinkhole of disease, for diseases contracted elsewhere are developed within their walls. Because a soldier infected with fever does not succumb to it untill he reaches Montauk Point, the eminent surgeon is of the opinion that the encampment is unhealthy. An ordinary American schoolboy is capable of reasoning more logically than this. It is now discovered that tetanus or lockjaw is a disease epidemic in that part of Long island in which Camp Wikoff is situated. There have been, however, no indications of an outbreak of the disease in that vicin ity this aeason. Deafness Cannot te. Caret. by local applications, as they cannot reach the diseased portion of the ear. There is only one way to cure deafness, and that is by constitutional remedies. Deafness is caused by an inflamed con dition of the mucous lining of the Eus tachian Tube. When this tube is in flamed you have a rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, aud when it is en tirely closed, Deafness is the result, and unless the inflammation can be taken out and this tube restored to its normal condition, hearing will be destroyed for ever; nine casas out 6f ten are caused by catarrh, which is nothing but an in flamed condition of the mucous sur faces. We will give One Hundred Dollars for any case of Deafness (caused Dy catarrh) that cannot be cured by Hall's Catarrh Cure. Send for circulars; free. F. J.
