THE EXCELLENCE OF SYRUP OF FIGS
is due not only to the originality and
simplicity of the combination, but also
to the care and skill with which it is
manufactured by scientific processes
known to the California Fig Svrtjp
Co. only, and we wish to impress upon
all the importance of purchasing the
true and original remedy. As the
genuine Syrup of Figs is manufactured
by the California Fia Svrup Co.
only, a knowledge of that fact will
assist one in avoiding1 the worthless
imitations manufactured by other pa
ties. The high standing of the Cali
fornia Fr Syrup Co. with the medi
cal profession, and the satisfaction
which the genuine Syrup of Figs has
given to millions of families, (makes
the name of the Company a guaranty
of the excellence of its remedy. It is
far in advance of all other laxatives,
as it acts on the kidneys, liver and
bowels without irritating or weaken
ing them, and it does not gripe nor
nauseate. In order to get its beneficial

Jotting From that Resort The Mannei
in Which the Inhabitants Kill
Time Description of
the Place.
Editor Chronicle :
The pleasant weather just succeeding
the rain has again increased the summer
travel and every evening a full boat
load of visitors arrive and are welcomed
at the wharf by the music of the band.
Surf bathing at the jetty and at the
Nye creek beach is among the favorite
diversions. The popular theory here in
regard to the accidental loss ol life while
bathing at other resorts along the coast,
is that the victims froze to death in the
icy cold waters of the ocean. After a
few trials I am convinced that the heal
thiest mode of surf botbing is to go in
jusi long enough to "holler, Oh!" and
then come right out.
The point Happy Hollow is well
covered with tents, und is the most pop
ular camping ground adjacent to New
port cn account of the fine views ot the
town and harbor. Nye creek, however,
leads in point of numbers.
Happy Hollow is cosmopolitan, plain
and unassuming. Everyone wears their
old clothes every day, wade in the mud
to dig shrimps and crohogs, fish lor
flounders all day, and come home happy
at night with only squaw fish, bull
heads and mud fish to show for their
day's sport.
Our camp is no solitude ; the distant
roar of the surf mingles with the regular
evening baud concert on Main street
and tne merry cackle ol mother Carey's
chickens on the sand bar just across the
channel.
But no sea-going craft seeks the
friendly shelter of this port, and one
cannot help wondering what the inhab
itants here will do for a living when the
summer visitors are gone.
Among the campers at the hollow dur
ing the week are : Mesdames James,
Kelly, Geo Brown, Toouiey, of the Co
lumbia hotel, Frank Fisher, and Ben
Wilson, all of The Dalles, and Mrs. Wil
helin, of Moro, Mrs. J. Brown, of Salem,
aud Mr. and Mrs. J. Nat Hudson, of the
Suinpter News, Baker county.
The first of September will see a thin
ning out of the crowds now here, as
many will return home to get ready for
the fall term of school. W.

WEDDING BELLS.
Marriage of B. t. Davidson to lll Bdlth
r. l'otter or Hood River. .V Delight
ful Wedding.
Upon the principles of Christianity,
and the duties and obligations of chris
tian wedlock recognized and faithfully
discharged, rests the stability and per
manency of oar government, the sanc
tity of the home and the virtue and
honor of our social institutions. These
tbinzs rightly understood impart to a
wedding more than the ordinary or pass
ing interest, and invests such an occa
sion with a solemnity, and yet with a
joy and delight all too lightly appre
ciated. On August 18, 1898, your contributor
had tLe ileaeure of attending the de
lightful weddiug of Mr. Benjamin L.
Davison and Miss Edith Pearl Potter,
at Belmont, in the unsurpassed Hood
River valley, the home of the bride's
pareute, Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Potter,,
famous throughout the whole country
side fur their generous and cordial hos
pitality. By a happy coincidence, the
occasion was also the anniversary of the
wedding of Mr. und Mrs. Potter, who
have been married thicty-sevvn years.
Rev. Robert Warner, presiding elder
of The Dalles district, solemnized the
wedding of their daughter to Mr. Davi
son, and the marriage with the ring and
the responsive service was very interest
ing and impressive. The bride was
tastefully attired in conventional white,
with veil and appropriate flowers. Un
der the marriage bell the happy couple
received the heartlul congratulation of
their parents, relatives and friends, and
then led the way to the dining room,
where all partook of an elaborate and
bountiful supper amid mirthfullness and
genuine good feeling.
The prevading atmosphere might well
indicate to a looker on, that the present
was an omen of the other similar occa
sions from among the happy group.
And why not?
The invited guests, a number of whom
were childhood friends of the bride,
were :
Rev Robert Warner, The Dalles; Mr
and Mrs Frank McFarland, sister of the
the bride. Earl Carrol, Victor McFar
land, Mr and Mrs E Qnackenbnsb and
Fred Quackenbush, all of Portland;
Rev and and Mrs G R Archer, Mr W
Isenborg, Mr M Isenberg, Miss Bess
Isenberg, Miss May Chapman, Mr W
Johnes and Miss Maggie Frazier, Mrs
Caetner, Mr J Gregory and Eddie Mc
Farland, of Hood River; Mr Thomas
Gregory, Mr L Gregory and Miss Ruth,
of Portland University.
A slight personal allusion will indicate
the happy auspices, under which these
young people embark upon the sea of
life together. Mr. Davison is studying
for the Methodist ministry and is a
genial, earnest and devoted gentleman.
Mrs. Davidson is a very sincere and
sweet christian woman, and thoroughly
in sympathy with her husband's life
purpose. She seems to have inherited
her mother's warm-heartedness, devo
tion and zeal in the christian life. If
their lives are spared, the world will
surely be richer and better for their
presence in it. X
Our baby has been continually troub
