The chronicle as an
evening paper.
Today the Chronicle Publishing
Company gives to its patrons the
last issue of the Morning Chroni
cle. In futnre it will be issued as
it was previous to the last few
months, as an evening paper.
The change was made on account
of the war, that our patrons in The
Dalles and the surrounding, country
might have the latest news every
morning. Now that the war has
drawn to an end, we see no reason
why we should continue longer with
our morning publication since it in
volves much more expense and the
additional patronage gained by the
change is insufficient to warrant us
in continuing longer.
The change will not effect the
good qualities of the paper, and we
can promise our patrons that Tn"
Chronicle will contain as much of
the latest news and be as good an
advertising medium as heretofore.
Therefore we confidently expect the
liberal amount of patronage we have
always received and will do our best
to fulfill our part of the contract in
a satisfactorv manner.
PEACE ASSURED.
The peace commissioners will
meet in Paris not later than the 1st
of October, and after the prelimina
ries are settled they will enter upon
the serious work of arranging the
final terms regarding the Philippines.
Spain, having been so signally de
feated on land and water, and com
pelled to abandon Cuba nrd Porlo
Eico, will, doubtless try her fine hand
at circumventing, the Americans in
the way of diplomac3T. She will en
deavor to ring in some sort of a
European combination, and .. there
will be no end of citations from in
ternational law, of precedents in
numerable, and possibly an attempt
to fall back on the uti possidetis, or
some other recondite subterfuge will
be sprung to bewilder and cenfuse
the innocent and unsuspecting Yan
kees.
Everything will turn on the con
struction of the article concerning
the disposition to be made of the
Philippine islands. The Spaniards
will endeavor by all means to keep
them, and will urge the incomplete
conquest of the islands at the signing
of the protocol, and that shejias al
ready surrendered more than Amer
ica demanded at the beginning of
the war.
The country is anxious for peace,
and whatever terms the American
commissioners agree to will almost
certainly be accepted by the presi
dent and confirmed by the senate
A renewal of hostilities will not be
thought of, considering what we have
gained. A few newspapers will go
into tantrums over the remit, but
their yowling will have no more
effect than had the hoarse bawling of
John Hook at the close of the revo
lutionary war. So the great dailies
those manufacturers of public opin
ion, should wade in now, and give
the president and his commissioners
an inkling of what the American
people expect of them as to the out
come ot the negotiations. It will be
unfortunate for them to ' be over
reached by the Spaniards in this
matter. Most of the prominent
statesmen, as well as the influential
public journals of the Union, without
regard to party or section, have de
clared that the Stars and Stripes are
floating over the Philippines, never
to be removed, and it is to be hoped,
in the light of recent events, that the
islands will never be given back to
Spain.
When the war broke out the
American volunteer did not expect
to fight a battle in the Philippines at
night duiing "av fierce typhoon, but
the occasion came and he was equal
to it. '
Spain would never have yielded
if an immense American army, bad
not been called out. Every volun
teer regiment ready Jq camp helped
to achieve the victory.
Xhe United States navy will now
take a rest. It is not the targest in
size, but in other respects may fairly
be said to stand at the head of the
list.
