Last evening Captain Lewis received
letter from Wallace McCammant, etat-
ng that he would be here thia evening
and would take part in the exercises on
the Fourth as well as deliver the oration.
Mr. McCammant'a reputation as an or-
tor is well-known and our people can
look forward to a treat in the way of
oratory.
Preparations for the Fourth are being
made everywhere in our city. Tbe
marshal has a number of men at work
on the streets raking off the rocks And
rubbish so that the town -will present a
clean appearance, while nearly every
residence' a'nd place of business in the
city is being decorated beautifully. A.
M. Williams & Co. have attain dressed a
window to suit the occasion. It is
draped in the rear with a large Ameri
can and English flag. Between the two
stands Faneuil hall, and through its
open doors can be seen the men, in con
tinental costume, signing tbe Declara
tion of Independence. Suspended above
is tbe liberty bell and tbe old. bell
man, waiting impatiently for tbe word
to ring out the glad newe. On the
whole this window is one of the finest
that has ever been put in our city on
any occasion and reflects much credit on
its draper, Mr. Earnest Jenson.
College Songster.
Those who delight in the rollicking
college song, the tinkle of the mandolin
and the plunk of tbe banjo, have a treat
in store for - them when the Berkeley
Quartet appears at the opera bouse on
Wednesday, Julv 6th. The Quartet is
assisted by a large number of special
ties, and everyone is sure to be pleased.
The concert given by the Berkeley boys
is humorous, yet refined. It will please
the lover of fun as well as the musical
critic. The boys perform their numbers
with the ginger and snap which is char
acteristic of college men',1 and at the
same time they perform with the skill
of professional musicians. Tbe Dalles
has never. been favored by a visit, of the
university boys and the people here
should Bbow their appreciation by giv
ing them a good reception. They sing
at the Vogt opera house next Wednes
day night. Seats on sale ' at Snipes
Kineraly Drug Co.
