WEDNESDAY
APRIL 20, 1898
MORE DEFINITE NEWS.
The information contained in the
special dispatch to Tub Chronicle
today is tbc most definite of any
which has been received for several
days. The granting of passports to
Seaor Polo means that diplomatic
intercourse between the two nations
is at an end. Spain has been granted
lorry-eight hours in which to evacu
ate Cuba. There are some who still
hope that Spain will. surrender Cuba
rather than endure a war, but this is
highly improbable. Spain will fight,
and fight bitterly as long as her re
sources last.
Il is not underestimating the
American army and navy to sny that
in the Spaniards they will have foe
men of first-rate metal. Tkcy are
murdcreis it istiue; but the' are
fighters also, and in this instance
will have courage born of despera
tion. The people of the United States
must not make the mistake, now. that
' they made in 18C1, when the un
derestimated the power of the
eaeroy. The great civil war was
entered into on the part of the North
"with the expectation that ninety
days would see it settled; yet it
dragged on for four weary years.
As a nation we must go to the fight
rating the enemy as a foe which can
oaly be overcome by hardest efforts.
Xet us hope and pray that the
conflict will be a short one; but let
us not be surprised if it continue
longer.
GENERAL BO WARD'S WORDS.
One of the greatest soldiers in the
civil war was General O. O. Howard.
Tor gallantry aud patriotism he was
conspicuous, and though time has
made its many changes, his patriotic
fervor is undiminished. This is
what be says regarding the impend
ing conflict with Spain.
My heart goes with a people who
against cruelty and oppression are
straggling for a free government.
The Cubans, like our fathers of '7C,
deserve independence. In a public
address more than a year ago, I ad
vocated giving them belligerent
rights, and later publicly and pri
vately have favored the recognition
of their independence.
Intervention to secure human
rights and stab'e government in
Cuba and all possible indemnity for
ine cruel Maine episode, where our
sailors wero slain without pity in
tine of peace, is the president's lead
ing. It is the president's message.
Sinking every personal wish, I will
now follow (he president; he bears
the responsibility to God and the
people, nnd will honestly discharge
bis duty.
"Who words come from North and
South. Whatever other troubles the
country may have, the old complaint
of sectionalism has been removed,
and this nation is bound together
wore firmly than nt any time in its
Witory. It tokes a little trouble like
that we are having with Spain to
Imag out this fact clearly.
Now that war is upon us, let it be
a akert one. If America must strike
ftl first bjow, let it be done with
acb foree that few wore will be

means much in the way of prepara
tion. The United States is able to
occupy Cuba immediately and pre
vent the landing of a Spanish force,
and it would be pleasant news to
read of this being done.
"While the war with Spain goes on
there will be no cessation in the grab
for offices among the fusionists of
Oregon. The only thing which will
stop that is a Republican majority on
the 6th of June. With harmonious
action such a victory is certain;
without it the fusionists may parcel
out the offices among the chosen few.
The destruction of the Maine will
be regarded as something more than
an incident when the American sai
lor fighters meet the Spanish mur
derers in the first engagement. "Re
member the Maine!" will be the
battle cry which will cheer the
Americans to victory.
