TOMORROW'S CONVENTION.
Tbe Republicans of Wasco county
holds their convention tomorrow.
Tbe session will be one of the most
important of its kind held in recent
years. The circumstances surround
ing the political partte. at this time
make it necessary that unusual
good judgment guide in the deliber
ations of the Republican party. The
"believers in free silver have united
under one standard and present an
even front in the political battle.
Tbe unfortunate dissensions in the
Republican party in Multnomah
county hamper the organization
"throughout the state, and render what
should be a certain victory a matter
ot doubt.
'The Chronicle has no particular
suggestions to make to the body of
men who will meet and deliberate to
morrow. The personnel of the con
vention is excellent; representative
men have been elected from the vari
ous precincts, and their actions will
be guided by what seems best for
the party's welfare.
At this time, however, we cannot
but urge the importance of putting
forward the very best material the
party affords. In this county tbe
nominees of the Republican conven
tion may be sure of election at the
polls in June, and it is but right that
tbe nominations should be made with
regard to tbe iitness of the men nom
inated for the offices to which they
aspire.
The selection of delegates to the
state convention is of paramount im
portance this year. The situation in
state politics differs from what it js
in this county. Tbe fusion ticket
throughout Oregon will poll a large
vote, and it is ecsenl'ial that no man be
nominated by the Republican state
convention unless ho -bo of recog
nized ability and clean character.
In this way we can win, and in no
other. '
Let the delegates chosen to the
state convention be representative
Sepublicans, who can be trusted to j
manage wisely for the party's interett
and the good of the state.
President McKinlcy js receiving
undeserved .criticism from many
quarters. Do bis critics remember
ilfeat H is no small task to prepare a

rmiilttf,rT'fKomugtei siotse tbe
war, and the president is staking bis
reputation as n statesman upon its
strength and force. When viewed
dispassionately, the course of Presi
dent McKlnley cannot but be com
mended. Wo are not advocating
unnecessary delay, but the fact re
mains that every day this govern
ment is getting in better shape for
the conflict when It comes. By Sat
urday we shall be in belter fighting
condition than wo are today, and it
is possible such a consideration makes
the administration think nt this time
that "delays are not dangerous."
If Governor Lord will not call an
extra session to give to Oregon the
additional United States senator
rightly her's, perhaps lie may be in
duced to call tbe legislature together
and place Oregon upon a war foot
ing. Other states aio showing their
patriotism by voting money to prop
erly equip tke voluuteers who will
offer their services to the govermenl
if tbe time come when thoy arc need
ed. Oregon should not allow Gcr.
cral Compsou, who fouchl with
Meade ct al., to be the only sup
porter President McKinlcy has in
this far-off corner of the country.
"A word to the wise is sufficient" and
a word lrotn the wise should be suf
ficient, but you ask, who. are the wise?
Those who know. The oft repeated ex
perience of trustworthy persons may be
taken for knowledge. Mr. W. M, Terry

Recommendation.
A recommendation is necessary to
many persons. A druggist appreciates
it when coming from a good physician
especially. The character of our drugs,
the dispatch and accruacy with which all
formulas are treated has made us a repu
tation we shall endeavor at all times to
retain.
