"The officials of Lewiston, Idaho, are
very anxious to see the Culumbia river
made navigable past The Dalles. They
are interesting themselves in a move
ment to have a ship canal built around
the cascades above this place, or else
have a ship railway built so that ships
may enter above or below the rapids.
The Columbia and Snnke rivers are nav
igable for a long distance above this
city. The same is true of the Columbia
from this cty to salt water.
The promoters believe a canal or ship
railway will pay for itself inside of three
year., increasing commerce and the
value of property as well.
