The Dalles will be talked about
for some time to come in various
portions of the tiountry. The dele
gates and visitors to the late wool
convention have departed deeply im
pressed with the commercial possi
bilities of the city, and it would be
strange if a great deal of profitable
advertisement was not in this way
secured. The Commercial CJub,
which has achieved such an enviable
standing nil over the Northwest, is
now in a splendid situation to ac
complish great benefits lor the city.
Now is the time for beginning
active work to secure a woolen mill
at The Dalles. It is useless to spend
-words or paper stating the need for
such an institution or the benefits The
Dalles would derive. A woolen mill
with a pay roll supporting fifty or a
hundred men would do more towards
maintaining the commercial status of
The Dalles than the building of rail
roads in whatever direction they ma
be projected. A like industry at
Pendleton Las'given that city a de
cided impetus, and
the same result
here even in a
would be obtained
greater degree.
The papers of this city have long
called the attention of Uie people to
the need for a woolen mill, and will
continue so to do as long as the neces
sity exists. The time is ripe for ac
tion, and we lelieve that should the
Commercial Club once take hold of
the matter in the same vigorous
manner as it has done other propo
sitions, the time would not be long
until this boon could be secured.
There exists already a committee on
manufactories, in connection with
the Commercial Cub, and it this
corrmittee should confine Its atten
tion to this one matter and place
itself in correspondence with men
possessing capital, there need be little
difficulty in convincing them that
The Dalles is the most profitable
field they can find for investment.
The copperhead is abroad in the
land now ns he was in 18C1, or at
least, a species very neaily resembling
him is making an appearance. Al
though the present war scare hay not
been of long duration, yet a class of
individuals seems to have sprung up
who declare that under no circum
stances should America clash with
Spain since it would be a strong na
tion oppressing a weaker one. While
war, at present, seems improbable
because the Spanish government is
confessedly unable to raise sudlcicut
funds for 9uch an undertaking, yet
the duty of the administration is
plainly to make every preparation
for any contingency which might
arise. The opposition which has
arisen in some quarters to the pro
posal of providing two additional
artillery regiments for insuring the
coast defences is highly discreditable.
The present trouble with Spain shows
how easy at any time foreign entan
glemcnts may occur, and not to be
ready whenever such an event should
happen is the height of folly. There
arc going to bo wars and rumors of
war until the end of time, and the.
nation which is not fully prepared
some day will bitterly repent its lack
of foresight,
The Oregonian has discovered a
man whom it can safely abuse to its
heart's content. This individual is
State Senator George C. Urownell,
of Clackamas county. Wo do not
know Mr. Urownell, but from nil re
ports the halo around his head is not
of magnified size. The Oregonian,
however, states only Its side of the j
matter, and has nothing to say about '
the tune when the managers ot j
Dolph's senatorial campaign offered j
Urownell J00() to place Dolph in;
nomination and to support him. Ac-!
cording to the Oregonian the "other (
fellows'' arc always the rascals, and '
fts friends arc altosiether holy, If,
as Joe Simon says, Urownell offered
lo sell out to him for $3000, the J

The Klondike relief expedition
has turned out as everybody expect

government really wants to be of
service to the people of Alaska, let it
send steamers to bring the surplus

lessen the victims in that fever
stricken community.

STRANGE STORY OF CRIME.
Trustworthy Servant Turns Murderer
Husband to tht) Ilesru-.
One of the most remarkable stories
of thwarted crime comes from India.
A lady with her two children, who were
both young, was froinr in her own ekkn
trotn lininmujar to a place in the center
of the Bar tract.
The driver was an old servant of the
family and was thought to lie trust
worthy. For this reason the lady did
not think it necessary to leave her jew
elry behind her. At a lonely part of
the road the trustworthy servant,
stopped and ordered his mistress to
pass her gewgaws along. She did so,
not unnaturally, and then the man pro
ceeded to hind her, preparatory to kill
ing her.
At her request he agreed to kill the
infants after he had dispatched their
mother. He lifted the ax to strike the
blow, but the head flew off and disap
peared in the brushwood some yards
away. By this time the lady was un
conscious. When she came to she found her hus
band leaning over her and undoing her
fastenings. He explained that he had
felt a dread as of some impending ca
lamity, and so had followed her. Jn
the thicket the trustworthy servant
was found dead, his body already blue,
putrid and bloated. He had been stung
by a Khagi snake, whose bite paralyzes
the victim on the instant and decom
poses him in an hour.
