'I learn on undoubted authority thut one of Urn Maine's Bailors who was taken to the marine hospital, out of gratitude for the kind treatment and careful nurs ing received iroin Burgeons and attend nts, has broken the seal of silence en joined by bis superior of beers before leaving Havana, and makes statements, the truth of which cannot be doubted, And which points to the deliberate de struction of ttio vessel. "The sailor, whose name for obvious reasons is withheld for the present, says he wae on watch on the forward deck shortly before the explosion occurred. While looking over the Muine's bow into the waters of tbe bay he buw a black object slowly approuehing the vessel. The object, whatever it was, was appar ently illuminated and emitted Btnoke. He BiiBpectod something wrong and darted to communicate the fact to the officer of the duy, when the explosion occurred. Tho Maine was reared in the air and lie was thrown to tho deck stun ned and bleeding. "He also says that simultaneously with the raising of the Maine he saw the steam launch which was moored alongside of her, also thrown out of the water. This was before tho second ex plosion in the Maine's magazine was felt, and which sent her to the bottom." ('uliiiilzutluu Hclieiue. New YoitK, Feb. 18. GLOOMY VI KW OK TIIK SITUATION. lupuuesB Timex Think China la Tor menting Trouble. Nkw, Yoiik, Feb. 18. A Herald spe cial from Yokohama says: The Japanese Times takes a gloomy view of the Eastern situation. The fol lowing is from its leading editorial : "Things are in a state of suspense. Will the threatmed storm pass away without occassiouing any actual explo sion? Nobody should answer in the tiie aflinnative. We should say that the real dangers of the situation have yet to be faced. What these dangers will be it is not easy nor safe to foretell, hut we may state broadly that they will disclose themselves when the time conies for Japan to act the hero part on the stage." The Times speculating as to tho prob ability of Japan refusing China's request for time in which to pay the war indem nity, continues : ( "If our neighbors succeed in raising the money before that time it will he all right, but should their efforts he unsuc cessful then would be the inauguration of operations in the Eastern crisis. Un der the development of events, things may easily come very near to the point of explosion, China's failure to find money will open a new tcene in the drama, a scene which will be of more lively interert than anything thus far enacted," Frank Sherwood was down town to day, tiie (list time since he hud his tus sle witli cholera morbus.
