Chronicle says ;
'Kegardinj: the reported control of the
Oregon Short Line and the Oregon Hall
way & Navigation Company by the
Union Pacific, through purchase of a
majority of the etock of the Oregon
short Line, we are authoritatively in
formed that there has been no change in
the situation regarding the OregonShort
Line Stocks since the Union Pacific re
organization, some weeks are, the block
of stocks amonnting to $8,400,000 from
the trustees of the collateral trust mort
gage of 1S91, securing the Union Pacific
gold notes, Cs. While this block of
stock gives the LTnion Pacific a prepon
derating holding of the Short Line's
stock, of which the total if fL7"S,G00, hi!
does not, we are informed, give the the
company a majority interest, nor is
taero any Intention to disturb the Ore
gon Railway t Navigation Company
voting trust, which runs until 1900.
"The importance of preserving the in
dependence of the Oregon Railway &
Navigation Company as a terminal in
the interest of three companies, the
Union Pacific, Great Northern and
Northern Pacific, is thought to warrant
the belief that no one of these companies
will attempt an independent control."

tt Would Tnko Nearly Ten Thousand
Yours to Count It.
The following remarkable calculation
on the length of time which it would
take m person to count i, 0C0.0CO.0OO re
cently nppenred in nn issue of an Kng
:h periodical: What is a billion?
The l cply is very simple. In England a
1 ill ion is n million times a million,
il ,000,1 00,000,000). This is quickly
written and quicker still pro
nounced. But no mnn is able to
count it. You will count 1G0 or 170 u
minute. Rut let us suppose that you go
up as high as 200 a minute, hour after
hour. At that rate you would count
12,000 an hour; 233,000 a day, or 103,
JJ.OOO in a year. Let us suppose now
that Adam, at the beginning of his ex
istenee.hatl begun to count, and had con
tinued to do so and was counting still.
Had such n thing been possible, he
would not yet have finished the task
of counting a billion! To count n bil
lion would require n per.on to count
?b0 a minute for a pcilod of 0,512 years,
542 days. f hours ami 20 minutes, provid
ing he should count continuously. JJut
fi.ppoie we allow the counter 12 hours
daily for rest, eating and sleeping. Then
he would need 13,025 years, 319 days, 10
hours rind 45 minutes in which to com
; lete the task!

The moment that a young crocodile
breaks its shell it is to all intents and
purpose1; as active as it is at any time
luring its life. It will make straight
for the water, even if it be out of sight
and n good distance off, nnd it will pur
sue its prey with eagerness andrngility
during the first hour of its free existence.

Vice Itezal Invitations.
An invitation from the lord lieuten
ant in Ireland is supposed to be, like
one from tlr. queen whom he represents,
a command. Irish society, however,
does not always treat it as such, but,
according to convenience, either hon
ors it in the breach or the observance.
A 'Voeiety" person may throw over a
previous engag?ni.'nt in favor of a vice
legal invitation without being consid
ered to have commit ted a breach of man
ners. He may also refuse the vice regal
invitation if ko minded. Irish society
is not servile on this point, but exer
cises common sense and the liberty of
choice in the matter of amusing itself.
