Vah!IIN(ito.s,.Imii. 10. Uialion Merrill,
i)f Chicago, delivered the iuvocutioti nt
tlin opening of tin; minute today. A bill
wuh reported favorably preventing rail
road companies from cluuging nioro

At' 12:50 p. in., on motion of Davis, of
iMinnusota, chairman of the committee
on foreign relations, the senate went
into executive session to consider the
Hawaiian treaty.
Immediately after thu treaty was
called tin Pottiiircw ofi'ured a motion for
conducting the dulmto in open senate,
which was antagonized by Chairman
Davit), of thu foreign relations commit
tee, and others, thu principal portion nt
the debate for the first two hours of the
session being on this motion.
Wahiiinuion, Jan. 10. The senate de
clined to debate the Hawaiian propo
sition in open senuto.
Ill tllfl lllllMII.
Wahiiinuto.v, Jan. 10. The attend
ance in the house wub light today, but
the galleries were well filled. The civil
service debute was resumed, and Coouey,
Democrat, of Missouri, took thu floor. He
opposed thu whole civil service reform
idea, which lie denounced as a cheat
and a narrow swindle, A civil pension
list and olllcu holding class, he argued,
were logical and inevitable if it was to
be maintained.
Dorr, Kepublicun, of WeBt Virginia,
followed witli a set speecli in opposition
to thu law.
Cox, Democrat of Tennessee, said he
was so utterly opposed to the civil serv
ice reform Mint he would vote to strike
out the appropriation for the coinmU
siou and for the repeal of thu law.
Little, Democrat, of Arkansas, antago
nized thu principle, theory and practice
of the law.

Uoi.u-Muim, .lun. 10. Tliu legislature
convened this morning. Thu inaugura
tion of Governor lluslinell took place at
noon. A llanna mass convention was
billed for this afternoon and final con
ference on thu suuatnrHhip at night.
Although balloting begins in both
branches of thu legislature tomorrow, it
is practically settled in advance that
there will bo no election at that time.
Tiiu senate will stand II) to 17 against
lluuuu, and thu house will likely give
him a majority of one or more votes.
Theru is no election unless buth houses
are carried by somu one candidate.
Thu vote on Tuesday cannot bu nt nil
decisive, so far na Ilunun is concerned,
ns it is conceded by his workers tliut the
senate will stand 10 to 17 against him.
1Mb majority must como from tho house.
Thu opposition still claims tho house by
pott Baby.

at least 155 to 54, which would make thu
general UBBcmbly stand 7-1 to 71 on joint
ballot against Hanna.
Tliu inauguration of Governor Bush
nell and other events in connection with
it caused no cessation of conferences and
hustling in the senatorial contest. Thu
reassembling of the legislature brought
the members buck and the contest was
waged more persistuntly and bitterly to
day than ever.
In thu hotiBO the resolution was offered
to amend the state constitution bo that
United States senators shall be elected
by direct vote of the people. The house
udjourned till 10 a. m. tomorrow.
In the Benutu the 50-year franchise
bill wiib diucuBHed and an attempt made
to pass it under a suspension of the
rules, but It wua referred to the speciul
council and made a special order for to
morrow, just before the balloting for
senator begins. The senate took a re
cess untill 1 p. m., when Lieutenunt
Governor Jones and other state otlieerB
will be sworn in.
There has been much talk today about
bribery. Hon. E. G. Rath bone, one of
Hauuu's managers, claims to have the
stenographic notes of his secretary, who
was concealed and is alleged to have
heard the opposition make an oiler of
$5,000 to one member.
Today the opposition say they have
a mun who will, when his name is called
on ballott tomorrow, announce that $10,
000 wub ofl'ered him.
It is further stated that one of the
bolting Republicans will produce money
in thu session, and, witli it piled on his
desk, maku a sensational spoech on the
manner in which lie wub approached.
Thu money, which, it is claimed, was
taken as part of a preconcerted trap
plan, will be sent back.
