After the senatorial develope mentB of last night together with the repeated changes of front of represent ative Griffith and othor doubtful ; mem bers operations wore continued more clandestinely on both sides. No claims ot Change were made on either side. The feature of the day was the passage in the Iioubo, as its first measure and by unanimous vote, a bill repealing the law for BO-year franchises to Btreet railways. This repealing bill was introduced by liopresentativo Bromley, of Cleveland who is one of the Republicans opposing Hanna. The proceedings in the house were merely routiue, but the old lines of Monday were drawn whenever the steer iiiK committee so desired. In the sen ate thero were no new developments, Senator Burke continuing to co-operate with the Democrats. When your stomach begins to trouble you, itneedB help. When they were about half way across, a south-bound freight train came along. Karg retained his presence of mind and lay down on the ties, the train passing safely ovor him, but Cardwell became frightened and jumped oil' the bridge, which is about seventy feet high, and was instantly killed. In falling his head struck some of the joists and was crush ed in. Coroner Myers went to the Bcene early this morning. He immediately impanelled a jury, which roturnod a verdict exonerating the railroad com pany from all blame. Cardwell was an old-timer in tills country, and was and uncle to the Poole hoys, who, a year ago, wero under ar rest for holding up a Southern Pacific train in Cow crook cauyou. lluhliml thn Uritvn. The friends of the measure believe they can secure for it 02 votes, or tiiroe more than will he nec essary. There has, it in said, been a marked change of sentiment since the European powers inaugurated tiieir policy of ag gression in China. The feeling is very strong here that unlesB the United States takes in Hawaii, the islands are likely to cause us trouble in the future, when one or more of the European nutions at temps to acquire them or give them to Japan bb compuesation for their grab in China. THE COURT WAS THIRSTY. So It Overruled tbe Supreme Court and IlouRlit Itaclf Drink. Just lis Shakespeare has been ac cepted for years and yearn as the de ciding umpire in most matters literary, so the Nebraska people had grown to look upon the supreme, court of their state as the fountain head of wisdom, whose opinions could not be gainsaid. It is a wuy people have of regarding supreme courts in most states, as a mat ter of fact. William Alstadt, u little German, whose readiest identification among his people was by the name of "Bis marck," was not one who cared over much for tradition, and one summer day, after having been harangued by two lawyers until he was almost burst ing willi thirst, he made a decision which brought him fame. It does not make any especial difference what wus the question at issue. It was something about a dog. There was a sensible side to it and a technical side. The "tech nical" lawyer presented bushels and tons of authorities, and finally wound up with a triumphant declaration that the supreme court had decided on a similar case before and had decided his wuy. When he sat down, Bismarck, with a sigh of relief, said: "I decide for de oder feller. Come on, poys, let's dake a drink." But," cried the defeated lawyer, hi astonishment, "I tell you, your honor, tlmt the supreme court, has decided ex actly opposite." "My frient," said Bismarck, "inshen eral I huf some sympathies mit dot suhrcme court. But on a hot day, mit a fool of n lawyer dallcin' four hours, 1 am inofed to gonsult der good sense and shudgment of Bill Alstadt, J. P. Bill lstadt is not only gonviuced, but he is dlrsty, and he decides dut if der subreme court of JCebrnsky vants to make a tarn fool off Itself in a question like dis it can do so, but dot aint bind ing on dls shustv'e shop. Der subrcme court is hereby oferruled. Der plain tiff gits tt-r dog, and der court will now broceed to spend der fees in dis case in a way dot his shudicial thirst sug gests, mit great gordiality. Come on, poys." Thus it was that the supreme court was overruled, and as a plain state ment of fact .lust'eo Bill Alstadt's de cision lias always been followed in sim ilar eases brought in Nebraska tri bunals.
