INCIDENT IN STATESMANSHIP.
' If it is true, as is reported from
Washington, that a fight is being
made to oust Secretary Gage from the
president's cabinet, the episode is one
of the most disgraceful in American
politics. The appointment of Mr,
Gage to be secretary of the treasury
met with much enthusiasm among
business circles, and any attempt
looking to his forced retirement will
be received with displeasure by all
save the petty politicians who want
nothing which resembles rectitude
and ability in office.
We are not the least afraid that
President McKinley will allow the
secretary of the treasury to resign.
The president is too patriotic, high
minded and far-seeing to allow him
self to be swayed by the threats and
entreaties of the gang of agitators in
the senate, who, unless free silver is
.made the fetich on all occasions,
seek to destroy the temple.
Nothing will come of all the talk
concerning Mr. Gage's removal, but
the incident shows too plainly what
dangerous men occupy . "the seats of
the mighty." When statesmanship
has given way to demagogy in viru
lent form ; when United States sena
tors are influenced by absolutely no
motive but the desire for re election,
it is time for the American people to
pause and consider.
. It is m jre than probable that with
a continuation of good times much
of the complaint now attacking the
nation may be removed, but nothing
like a cure can be obtained until the
general tone of statesmanship can be
raised and men elected to the United
States senate shall be chosen by rea
son of ability, and not because of
political pull. It is fortunate for the
country that we have a few such
men as President McKinley, Secre
tary Gage and Speaker Reed at the
head of affairs.
Portland business men state the
holiday trade for 1897 to be the
largest for years. The same may be
said of The Dalles and doubtless of
the other Northwest towns which
were not built altogether on the boom
basis. The continued good prices
for all kinds of cereals, and the prom
ise of still further advances in cattle,
sheep and wool make the outlook
for nest year still more encouraging.
In addition to this, all lines of busi
ness upon the copst will receive an
impetus from the rush to Klonkike.
Prom every part of the world people
are coming with money to spend in
the Northwest, fitting out for the
Alaska gold fields. Many of them
may change their minds and remain
here. Those who do not, will leave
pleasant reminders of their visit in
the shape of United States gold
standard dollars.
The reorganization of the Union
Pacific marks an important event in
railroad circles. This one great
transcontinental road has been the
, prey of the plunderers of Wall street
until it has become little more than a
wreck. The men who have now
taken hold are capitalists of standing
and wealth, and their connection
with it means that the Union Pacific
shall be conducted upon a business
basis. . ;
,An Eastern Oregon paper has
nominated T. T. Geer for governor
on the Republican ticket. This is
' as near-to the gubernatorial chair,
probably, as Tall Timothy will get.
He is not the sort of man the politi
cians of Oregon want.

service to the ivlondike so that
copies of the Oregonian telling about
Portland's efforts to send relief ex
peditions, tee imprisoned miners

William D. Carter, the pioneer printer
of Portland is dead.
Offers have been made to patch up all
factional differences between the two
wings of the Republican party in Port
land. Fitzsimmons says that he will meet
Corbeit after Corbett has met Cboynski
or Maher. Corbett eays, "No, I will
fight Fitzaimmona first."
Late arrivals from Alaska report that
the richest strike that has yet been
made was recently discovered on Hemp
ker creek. Ordinarily it averages from
?4 to $6 to the pan.
A report received from Portland stales
that this morning the Bailey Gatzert
was in some manner caught in the draw
of the steel bridge and a number of pas
sengers thrown overboard and injured.
Further particulars could not be learned.
The Turkish government, replying to
the representations of Greece, has ex
plained that the firing upon the Greek
gunboat Actium by the Turks at Prevesa
on Saturday last, as the vessel was leav
ing the gulf of Ambracia, was due to a
misunderstanding.
Friedlander & Gottloeb yesterday took
formal possession of the Baldwin and
California theaters in San Francisco, as
successors of Al Hayman, who recently
retired from the theatrical business in
San Francisco. Friedlander & Gottloeb
now control all the first-class theaters of
the Bay city. ' .
Lord Salisbury, the British premier,
has written to United States Ambassa
dor Hay in response to America's latest
proposal in the Behring sea controversy,
by a request that Great Britain would
enter into an agreement with the United
States, Russia and Japan to stop Bealing.
Great Britain declines to enter into such
an agreement.
