Spokane Send a Man to Advocate the
Alleged Advantages of the
Overland Route.
Washington', Dec. 22.-Captain Brain
erd, of the subsistence department of
the army, arrived in Washington tbie
morning and although Secretary Alger
ia confined to his home by a severe cold,
he seat immediately for the officer and
had a conference with bim respecting
the execution of bia plana tor the relief
of miners in the Ynkon country. Gen
eral Merriam, commanding the depart
ment of the. Columbia, selected Major
T. H. Backer, Fourth.' cavalry, to pro
ceed to Alaska and ' make a reconnoi
eance of the pass leading from the head
of Lynn canal.
Senator Lodge has brought to the at
tention of the war department officials
the claims of the Boston Transportation
Company. Their representative,; Pierre
Humbert, asserted the company ia. in a
position to feed a large number of miners
inasmuch aa it has just received news of
the delivery by its agents at- Fort Sel
kirk, on the Yukon river, of 200,000
pounds of food. This point is above
Dawson.
The announcement that the war de
partment ia by no means committed to
any one route in ita efforts to reach the
miners in the Klondike country, has
caused persons interested in the various
routes to advance .the claims of their
respective sectionB. ' " ; ; "
The Spokane Chamber of Commerce
has sent Frederick, R.' Marvin, an ener
getic newspaper man of that place,' aa a
representative to urge the - superior fa
cilitiea of the overland route northward
from Spokane.' " This is the old tele
graph route laid down by the agents of
the Western Union Telegraph Company
years ago, when they sought- to run a
telegraph line to the'.Behrine straits.
Marvin haa stated to the war depart
ment that the route ia still clear, that
through the dense northern forests there
' ia a trail 150 feet broad affording easy
passage for draft animala and the feasi
bility of the route in winter ia shown by
the fact that for many years it has been
traversed by numerous trappers and
prospectors, while the absence ' of heavy
grades insures the ability of animals to
carry, large loads.
Secretary Alger ia asked to designate
some of the army officers now at Spo
kane to report upon the advantages of
the route.
Was a Dashing; burglar.
San Francisco, Dec. 22. Charles W.
E kins, who escaped from a Los Angeles
deputy sheriff on a north-bound train
..Monday morning, near Fresno, ia a son
oi a well-known banker of New HaveD,
Conn. He came to the Pacific coast two
years ago, and engaged in the real estate
busineeB at Los Angeles. He was pop-:
ular, and was admitted into the beat
society. '
Sooo after hia appearance in that city
many burglaries were committed among
the aristocratic residents. Houses were
entered midday and jewelry abstracted
The thefts were finally traced to Elkins,
and he was arrested on five charges of
burglary. He plead guilty to one charge
and was sentenced to five ' years in San
Quentin. . On his way there he made
his eecape by lumping from a car win-
-dow.

Downs was born in New Haven, 33

Yale law school in the class ot '84, and
is a member of the ConnecticuUbar. He

Were Too Giddy. -
Iron Mountain, Mich..' Dec. 22. The
school board of this city has decided that
many of the teachers are giving too
much attention to affairs of society, and
has called a halt 'in the torn) of a reso
lution requesting teachers to refrain
from attending dances, parties and oth
er social entertainments . held , upon
evenings preceeding days .upon which
school is to be held.
New York, Dec. 22. The University
Athletic Club, composed of alumni of
the big colleges, ' baa decided , to again
take up thfe rules governing the game
of football, and to have eliminated, if
possible, the mass playing and , the
guard-back play, and to have made oth
er amendments which, will relieve the
game of some of ite rowdy features.
A meeting of the football committee,
composed, of Bashiel of Anapolis, Sears
of Harvard, Camp of Yale, Bell of Penn
sylvania and Dennis of Cornell, will be
called aa soon as possible to take up the
matter. Communications, have been
sent to all the- leading colleges, and
while no answers have been received yet
from the majority of them, the con
ference expects a satisfactory answer
from all.
Political Prisoners Executed.'
San Fka-cisco, Dec. 22. News has
reached this city of the shooting in Gua
temala ot a number of political prisoners
including two men who are known over
in the Central American republic. ,The
execution occurred a- month ago, at
Huehuetlango. '.''-
The principal victim was Captain Her
culano Ruiz, brother-in-law of General
B uentes, now in this city, Another vic
tim was the Honduran colonel, Francis
co Zelaya. He was accused of aiding
the revolutionary party and was execut
ed by order of Barrios, the command
ing carried out by Genera1 Luis Molina.
Three other 7 prominent Guatemalans
suffered death in the .same manner, in
eluding Licenciado Marcello de Leon,' a
lawyer, and Elizando Baal.
It ia understood that there are in Gua
temalan prison no lees than two hun
dred and twenty-eight prisoners of the
late revolutionary war. '

Pack your own trunks and pack with

" More rumpled and impossible gowns
are due to careless packing1 and looee
adjusting than any other one thing.
No amount of tight packing or of pres
sure applied downward will do more
than accentuate the natural folds. A
single toss "of the trunk that is loosely
packed means a hopeless, jumble- of
bats, wraps, bodices, laces and what
not.
Begin at the foundation with the
heaviest garments. Do not fold too
much; shake skirts from the waistband
and spread them, for the entire length
without folding that the size of the
trunk will allow. If not, spread out
with great care in the folds which are
naturally taken when held in an up
right position, and turn over smoothly
at the top.
Shake wraps from the shoulders, lay
them out in the folds they, naturally
take, with great care smooth the
sleeves an? turji ihe froats over on the
back, smoothing and adjusting all
trimmings and frills so us to avoid hori
zontal creases.
It is impossible to so fold a garment
as to avoid all lines, but those taken
lengthwise of the cloth readily disap
pear and are also little noticed, as
they take th direction of the folds
formed by the garment itself.
