" Tidal 'WaYeoifTratS!it-ach.
A special to the Astorian says of the
recent tidal wave on Clatsop beach :
"During the recent high tide Mr. and
Mrs. Newman, M. J. Younz, Mrs. .Tohan
neson and two children, Mrs. Babbidge
and Virgil Noland were on the beach
enjoying the grand and unusually high
surf, and particularly - one ewell, which
attracted their attention, when they
were suddenly confronted with a wall
of water which nearly engulfed them.
The swell came higher and higher, and
finally caught Mr. and Mrs. Newman
and Mr. Young before they could escape,
and rolled them over and over, and al
most took tbem out to sea. Mrs. Johan
neBon ; narrowly escaped by getting
through the fence at the bathhouse?,
but was thoroughly soaked. Her two
children had run on before, frightened
by the appearance of the sea, but were
caught in the grove at the Webb cot
tage, 1000 yards from the beach. They
clamored on to & knoll and avoided
rough treatment, though tbey received
a ducking. ' The other grown people got
off with a scarce and a soaking. The
water reached the Allen cottage-on the
shell road and the Estes cottage on the
county road. All the high part of the
beach is covered with driftwood, which
knocked down . the fence at the bath
houses. " , - ' -
SQUAW AS A LUMBER JACK.
(Tnlqne Position of 'Splice Shoe Mag"
- In Northern Wisconsin.
One of the- best log drivers and all
around lumber jacks in northern Wis
consin is-a Chippewa Indian woman
named Maggie Moon, better known in
the woods and on the river as "Spike
Shoe Mag-."- She may now be seen every
day running1 lops on the Nemadj river
at Superior, and she has been seen at
that same occupation every summer
during- the last five years, while in the
w inter season ehe-has beea employed
as an ordinary lumber jack to swing-
tiie ax," to skid logs, or to drive a tote
team. . 1 . r
Maggie is the wife of John Moon, a
stalwart Chippewa Indian, whose oc
cupation is also that of a lumber jack
and log driver. Mr. Moon took a con
tract onca to harvest eoine timber for
the owner thereof, but he took the job
at too low a price and was obliged to
put bis wife to wort chopping and haul
ing in order to Bave a man's wages.
Mrs. Moon seemed to take to the work
as though she had been used to it all her
life, and she made such a handy lum
ber jack that her husband could never
see his way clear to dispense with her
services.. Three years ago John Moon.
went to work on the log drive and took
hi3 wife with him just to see if she
could do the work, in .ease she had to.
Mrs.- Moon rigged herself out- with a
pair of bloomers, donned a slouch hat
and a pair of spike shoes, and sallied
forth with her lord and master to.
iearn the log-driving business. ,
... After experiencing all manner of
hardships and disappointments, , she
finally mastered the business, and can
now balance hsrsclf upon a floating log
with the dexterity of an acrobat. The
couple live during the driving season
in an old log cabin on the bank of the
Nemadji river, and in winter they make
their abode in a small canvas tent,
usually pitched n short distance from
the mess camp. N. Y. Times.
