'Pat Donan was ripping Republicanism up the back and bowling crlamity for political purposes. ; Now he is employed by the O. R, & N. to boom Oregon, and he sings like the cylinder of a thresh ing- machine." The --trcuble la, was, and always wi?l be witb Donan's work, that it fs so grosbly exagger ated that it loses all its power for good and becomes a positive evil. The Col. should put Ihe air brakes on his imagination. This is what he sa3'8 of Oregon : . "From the northern line of Cali fornia and Xevada to the remotest limits of Alaska and the Northwest territory, the whole 'Pacific slope is booming booming beyond all prec edenL I am one of those who de voutly elicve3 that 'A- ?nley, as the advanee agent of prosperity,' was traveling a long way ahead of his show; but the caravpn has caught up with the foremost buglar and bill poster, so far f the Pacific North west Is eoneenaed. The -stars in their courses have fought for ..protection, Billy and the 'grand old party.' PrDsperity has wept like a golden cyclone- over Oregon, Wash'ntDn, Idaho, Alaska and nl:sh Columbia. . Great as the Ywkon gold boom ?s5 and infinitely greater s it is to be, it is, as yet, but a tifle compared with other booms that are push'ti the Pacific cosst forward. Take Oregon, for instance. With an aic; of 96,000 sqrre miles and but about 400,000 Lopulaon, it has this year produced 40,000,000 bv-she's of ' wheat, worth $30,000,000, In addi tion, Oregon has this year turned out 00,000,000 feet of lumber, worth $12,000,000; about 50,000,000 lbs. of fruit, worth about $.j,0G0,000 ; something like 15,000,000 pouixis of wool, worth $2,000,000; fisb, amount- , ing to 3,000,000; gold, silver, cop per, lead aud coal, aggregating $ 10,- . 000,000 a grand lotl of 370,009, ; 000, or about $175 for every ro a a, woman and child witbin her borders for one year's yield." The report that comes from -England ns to thread and twine manu facture will interest persons in Ore gon who have been paying attention to growth of fibers. A movement is on foot to start opposition on a great scale to tbo Coates company. So The Celebrated lecture l3 W. H ILIFF, Uorid of .Ji7t, Tickets of Admission, 25c. Lecture to commence at 7:45 o'clock. many applications for stock have been received that it has been de cided to increase the capital from $5,000,000 . to $15,000,000. The Coates company is capitalized at $37,500,000. Fourteen leading firrns of tbreadmakers in cotton, silk and linen, have been absorbed by the new anti-monopoly, and a war in the trade is looked . for. The Coates people, however, are taking things comfortably, and they say that there is room for both in the field. The report - that there will be a two-thirds majority in the senate for the ratification of the Hawaiian treaty is probably correct. The an nexation project gains friends as time passes, says the Oregonian. 'All the objections which can be urged against annexation have been heard, and they are not formidable. The president will, in his message, recom mend early action, and nearly all the Republicans and . a majority of the Democrats are likely to stand with him on this question. Nobody need be surprised if annexation comes be fore the end of January. The wealth of Wasco county in money, as shown by the assessment rolls for 1897, is but $4,987, and yet thousands of dollars worth of busi ness is being transacted throughout the couaty every day.
