The coast cocked-hat record was broken - Monday evening at the Tacoma Athletic Club, and the honor of holding the highest score now belongs to RiddelL That gentleman bowled 87, one point more than the former record held by A. B. Croasuian, of the Multnomah club. The ecore was made in contest, and nine Gtroight strikes were made by Riddell from the opening of the game. This ia a phenomenal score, and that it may stand for some time is not doubted. It will have only the effect of making Port land's bowling cracks break their backs trying to come up with it. The house of lords presents a very quaint appearance during1 the hearing of the important trada union appeal, Allen vs. Food, ia vhich for iha first time in 17 years the judg-os of tie high court have been summoned to gi. c i.heir opinion and advice. Eight of their lordships, in full-bottomed vvig-s and their robc3 of satin, almost sitting-upon each other'3 laps, are seated, at a small table, between the lord chancellor and the narrow space reserved for the bar, on two settees in Ehape resembling- the Woolsack. Theirrr.ouths arc closed, and the most loquacious of them may not so much as put a question to th.e learned counsel e "Ch1 ia tlic case, while the law lort's. seated in plain clothea hi the barons' benches behind them, are keeping- up a running- fire of critical comment. There is no prevision, for the usual voluminous note-taking and at most th.cy cizchang-e a few re marks in undertones cmor.g" themselves. To the judiv-ial mir.d, nccustcmed to be supreme within its own domain, it must be something of a trial to play second fiddle, cr, rather, to play no fiddle at all, but merely to be called in to say whether the strings are'in tune. At the conclusion cf the arguments their lordships will be invited to ex press their cpinicn upon the points submitted to them, but they have no effective order or voice in the matter. The judges suir.moced to attend are Justices Hawkins, Mathcw. Cave, Wills. Grantham, Lawrance, Write and Mr. Justice North, of the chancery division, Who would hcrdly be recognized in his ecarlet and ermine by the practitioners and litigants in his sober suited court. There are nine law lords present, in cluding the lord chancellor of Great Britain and Ireland, an unequal number, in order to insure a majority on one side or the other. The other morning the bishop of Manchester in his robes, looking like the proverbial fish out of water, occupied a seat during the hear ing behind his lay brethren. Ushers in. somber black, with rosettes and silk stockings, flit noiselessly to and fro at the bidding of the lord chancellor. As it is not perhaps generally known that any member of the public has a right to enter the house of lords when it is sit ting as a court of justice, the spectators are few. Westminster Gazette. Row to Serve Potntoea. Old potatoes boiled whole;, peeled and covered with e. sauce made by cooking together half a pint of milk, a table spoonful of butter and one of flour, are better thus prepared than when served in any other fashion. New potatoes are waxy until late in the season, and should not be given to children or to persons of delicate digestion. -The old fashioned saying that, new potatoes should never be eaten before the Fourth of July contains a certain amount of common sense, although the rule ap plies to home-grown potatoes and not to those that come to our markets from the far south. There are certain veg etables which depend little upon the variety of cooking to be palatable. Of these are green peas, string beans, as paragus and a few besides. These, if boiled until tender and dressed simply with butter, salt and a little pepper, are too good to be improved by any change. Eut there are others that can 'be cooked in a variety of ways, and each will be found acceptable. St. Louis Republic. Thcnsbtfal. "No." , "Not even when you told her that you had become desperate and were going- on an expedition) to -the north pole?" "Not a bit."
