A Boy Whipped by Owls.
An Illinois boy went hunting- one day
and in a patch of woodland he saw a
large owl perched high up in a tree.
Owls are not good to eat, and they are
useful to the farmer in catching mice
that' infest the barn, but this boy, like
most boys, only thirsted to kill some
thing; so he fired, and brought down
the owl. He ran topick up the owl, sup
posing it to be dead, but it was only
-slightly disabled, and promptly fastened
its talons into the flesh of his right
hand. This was bad enough, but pre
, ently there came another owl, apparent
ly the mate of the first one, and the two
birds proceeded to give the young hunt
er such a thrashing as he will never
liave again in his lifetime. Indeed, he
lad to fight, with all his strength to
reach the spot where he had left his grin.
Securing that, he beat off the owls,
which finally took flight. Tattered, torn
and bleedingj the boy had no energy left
to pursue them, or even to reload his
gun. He staggered to the nearest, house.
. lad his wounds dressed and went homes
mpty-handed, but wiser. Golden Days.
T Desert Rattlesnakes.
' In the samli wastes of 'southern Cali
fornia two varieties of rattlesnakes are
foundl. The larger ones, called' "tiger
Tattlers," sometimes attain a length of
four feet, but it is said that they are
elnggish, and far less dangerous than a
smaller variety named the "side
winder." This name comes from the
snake's habit of moving sidlewise. as
well as advancing- in the ordinary man
lier. It is also called the "horned ratt je
Kn'ake," on account of the horn-like pro
tuberances over its eyes. It seldom ex
ceeds a foot and. a. half in length, but
its mot ions are very quick, andiit has the
reputation of being "vicious." Youth's

Failure of. Si BrlKht Committee of
Award to Locate the Tonne Lndy
Entitled to a World's .
Fair Prise. '
The committee on awards of the
world's fair, of which John Boyd'Thach
er was chairman, would be particularly
delighted' to learn the present where
abouts of Miss GyJa Sohlberg, formerly
a- resident of Evanston. '. -
Miss Sohlberg was an exhibitor in the
woman's seetion of the fair, and in due
time had the pleasure to b informed
by the committee jtha.t a mednl and di--ploma
had been awarded her. The years
rolled slowly by. Whether hope con
stantly deferred' by the nonappearance
of the awards or -the classic?.! quietness
of Evanston brcught about -the result

considerately startled the public by is
suing the much-'-onged'-for medals the
one addressed to Miss Sohlberg at Ev
anston was ruthlessly returned . with
the indorsement '".Removed," made by
a cold-bloodciT, unsj-mpsthlzing official
of Uncle Sam's post office department.
And here is where the greatness and
nterprise of the award committee
ones in. Any other committee would
lave permittee! Tne twcniy-5ive-cent
edal and the ten-cent diploma to re
ain at the committee's office until
lied for. But not the John Boyd
hacher committee. They were cre-
ted for a different purpose, and, given
the opportunity, would astonish the
world. They' were bound to discover
the Evanston fair maid or perish in the
attempt as n committee, bothrcoUect
ively and individually, or at least with
a reckless liberality expend 'the com
mittee's stamps and official stationery.
Investigation was started and it was
discovered that a lady of her name and
appearance had etartcd for Europe,
with London as the first stopping place.!
Ten days later the medal and diploma
were in London, but 'ten days still later
they were back in Chicago. ' New ef
forts wereVmade. The next outgoing
steamer carried a package r.ddressed
to Miss Sohlberg-. and again it came
back and in justice it must be said
the committee met it like- a man and a
brother. .. , ". '
Half a dozen times this particular
package .penetrated into various parts
of Europe, but alwaysj was too patri
otic to remain. Did the committee final
ly acknowledge defeat. Not they. New
investigations were made, and it was
discovered that Miss Sohlberg. of Ev
anston, was of Swedish descent. The
medal and Oiploma were at once dis
patched to tl:s royel Swedish depart
ment of state at Stockholm, with a re
quest that the package would be
handed her with the committee's com
pliments, and now the committee rested
on their laurels. But their joy at-their
relief was premature. One day the com
mittee was surprised to receive a bulky
foreign package covered with seals and
tape. A isions of foreign decorations.
knightly honors, etc., floated round: the
minds of the committee. '
The package was opened with trem
bling hand's and revealed the Evans
ton diploma and medial, together with
a letter in which- his excellency the
minister of state had the profound and
agreeable pleasure to return the etc.
etc, but Miss Sohlberg is not a resi
dent of the country, "but, as far as can
be ascertained, a resident of the city
of Evanston, state of Illinois, of the
United States of Araerica, and there
fore it is returned, etc., etc., with his ex
cellency the minister subscribing- him
self the committee's most obedier, and
humbl servant, and with the most dis-:
tinguished consideration, etc., etc.
A most serious consultation now took
place. The result of -tiie solemn , de
liberations of the committee Avas that
the medal and diploma should be re
turned to the Swedish! state depart
ment. And as it was ordered so it. was
done.
Some months later, which was a few
days ago, the remaining members of the
John Boyd Thacher committee were in
formed" that the royal department of
state had the honor, etc., to inform the
honorable committee that his excel
lency, -ete., had ordered that the medal
and diploma should be deposited in the
commercial museum of curiosities of
the department and subscribed himself
theoommittee's,with distinguished, etc.
Thus the medal has found a resting
place, but the fair Evanston maid re
mains an unknown quantity.. Chicago
