DEATH IN DYEA PASS
Eighteen Packers Buried Un

ENTIRE TOWN OF SHEEP CAMP GONE

Ful-Muj Goldseekers
Return.
Port Townskkb, Sept 24. The steamer
Pioneer, which left the Sound Septem
ber 12th with the bark Shirley in tow
for Skaguay, returned at 1 o'clock this
morning, having made the ran down in
ninety-six hours.
The Pioneer brings down a story of a
snow or landslide -between Sheep Camp
and Chilkoot pass last Sunday morning,
in which eighteen men are supposed to
have lost their lives ; only one body bad
been found, that of a man .named
Choynski, cousin to Joe Choynski, the
prizefighter. The fifteen or eighteen
men supposed to be lost were packers on
the Dyea trail, and they had upwards of
$30,000. in their possession.
There are many here who do not be
lieve the story, as it is very early in
the season for snow slides. Officers of
the Pioneer say the story was brought to
Skaguay Sunday evening by three men
who told it , in such a thrilling manner
as to leave no doubt of its truthfulness.
They described the avalanche as con
sisting of rocks, ice and dirt, the mass
having been loosened by the recent un
precedented bard rain which has been
falling continually for the past month.
All the bridges on the Skaguay -river
have been washed out, and the river is a
raging torrent.
W. W. Sprague, of Tacoaia, who
started eight weeks ago with a three
years' outfit, returned from Skaguay on
the Pioneer.
The steamer Al-Ki, a week overdue
from Alaska, arrived this morning at 4
o'clock. She carried a large list of men
returning from Skaguay, who were un
able to croBB the pass. The snow is six
inches deep at Lake Bennett, and three
inches fell on the summit of Chilkoot
pass last Saturday.
THE STORY CORROBORATED.
Captain Nellson Says a Slide Occurred
at Sheep Camp.
Port Townbhnd, Wash.. Sept. 24.
Captain Neilson, master of the tug Pio
neer, which arrived this morning from
Skaguay, corroborates the story of the
sncwslide, or more appropriately, land
elide, in the neighborhood of Sheep
Camp. Captain Neilsen says :
"Three men came to Skaguay beach
Sunday night with a story that at Sheep
Camp that morning at 3 :30 o'clock a pe
culiar sound from the southwest side of
the mountain was heard, and before the
residents of the camp could fully dress
they found themeelves being rapidly
borne down the canyon on a mass of
moving debris from the mountain side.
The majority of the residents of Sheep
Camp escaped, although the entire town
was almost wholly destroyed.
"The slide struck the town in the
northern part, where nearly all the pack
ers were quartered in tents and sleeping
the sleep of hard, overworked men.
The main part of the elide from the
mountain missed Sheep Camp proper,
although from the report very little of
the town remains. Packers' camp was
wholly carried away, and it is impos
sible to learn the full names of the un
fortunates, as they were all known by
surnames, such as Jack, Jim, Dick,
etc 1
"The cause of the slide was reported
to be the action of heavy rains on the

W. W. Sprague, of Tacoma, returning
from Skaguay pass, verifies the above
report.
Sick stomach means sick man (or
woman).
Why not be well?
Sick stomach comes from poor food,
poor nourishment; means poor health,
poor comfort. Shaker Digestive Cordial
means health and a well stomach.
If we could examine our stomach we
would understand why it is that so little
will put it out of order.
But, unless we are doctors, we never
Bee our stomach. We don't feel it. We
would feel it less if we took Shaker
Digestive Cordial.
Shaker Digestive Cordial makes your
stomach digest all the nourishing food
you eat, relieves all the symptoms of in
digeetion, acts as a tonic and soon
makes you feel well and strong again.
The more you take, the less you feel
of your stomach.

FIREMEN TO THE RESCUE'.
Attempt to Burn a New Orleans School
frustrated
New Orleans, Sept 24. Efficient
work bp the fire department in the face
of the attack of a .mob, enabled the de
partment to save the main portion of
the Beauregard echool building, which
waB fired last night by riotors who ob
jected to having the structure converted
into a yellow fever hospital. Only' the
annex and one end of the structure were
reduced to ashes.
After the mass meeting of . citizens
held last night a riotous crowd gathered
around the building and openly- threat
ened at the first opportunity that they
would fire it.
Throughut yesterday evening Sister
Agnes and a number of other Sisters of
Charity, together with help from the
hospital, bad been putting the building
in order for the reception of yellow
fever patients.
At nightfall Surgeon Bloom, of the
hospital, the sisters and others had been
warned that they had better leave the
building. They did so, and made their
way through a dense crowd of panic
stricken citizens. Then a small force of
police was ordered to the scene. While
the police were engaged In attempting
to quell the riotous crowd in front of the
building two incendiaries with a five
gallon can of oil proceeded to the rear of
the building and quickly bad it in
flames.
An alarm was turned in, but the first
neighboring engine had scarcely arrived
when the hose was cut. When other
engines arrived their hose was also de
stroyed by the mob. Chief Gaster
finally arrived with a squad of officer,
which beat the mob back.
DANGER IN GETTING SHAVED.
Barber Oaarht to Wttan, Their Hsvnda
ud Their Implement!.
The proposition to make a more care
ful man of the tonsorial artist, in eo
far as relates to the transmission of dis
ease from his infected to his well
clients, is not a new one. The subject
has been written upon by several ear
nest men before Heinrich Berger.whose
"Hygiene in den Barbierstuben" re
cently appeared in Leipzig-. No writer
has, however, seemed to go so deeply
into the question and lay down such
strict rules for the knight of the shav
ing knife. We are told' that he must be
a person free from epilepsy and all man
ner of seizures, drunkenness and "infec
tious diseases.
Being free from. these affections him
self, he may give professional attention
to all persons, including those under
the influence, or those likely to have a
fit in the chair, provided they are free
from skin, haif and sexual diseases of
.an infectious nature. Otherwise they
are to be treated at home with their
own implements. The author gives a
number of other rules which are in
themselves and so far as they go good
if barbers could be prevailed upon to
follow them but he does not sufficient
ly insist upon the necessity of boiling
to the point of sterilization his instru
ments, towels, sponges and especially
his own hands.
There are many things besides the
so-called foarber'a itch, which may be
transmitted in - uncleanly shaving and
hairdressing, and of which the public
knows little or nothing. Favus is de
cidedly on the increase in this coun
try, and, the number of children turned
away from the cities schools for this
cause since the inspection innovation
went into effect would greatly sur
prise those who think of favus as a.
European or foreign affection.
Attention has recently been called by
a member of the -New York Derm atolog
ical society to the danger of the collating-
tweezers used in barber shops.
Ingrowing hairs and those attended by
suppurative inflammation, as in syco
cis, are extracted, and thenextcomeris
operated upon without adequate and
usually without any cleansing at all
of the instrument. Certain rules-should
be adopted, if possible, by barbers in
general to protect their patrons from
dangers which are more real than im
aginary. Above all, they should remem
ber that scrupulous cleanliness of im
plements and. hands is the first requi
site, and the advice now being given to
surgeons to "boil their hand's" applies
almost equally to them. At the least
they could: give a little wash between
each "next" for the mere sake of ap
pearance and in the interest of busi
ness, if for nothing else. Medical
